A salsa combo? || ¿Un combo de salsa?

In a previous video I told you about the different group formats for which I already have the arrangements written and which can accompany me. There I talked about the sextet with vibraphone, which is the smallest format.

However, the way the project was conceived from the beginning, is with what we could call the Combo format. But where does that name come from for a salsa group?

In Cuban music it is customary for groups to have a name, depending on the musical style and instrumentation. Thus we have the case of the Septeto (septet), which is the most traditional formation of the Cuban son, which includes the guitar, the tres and the trumpet. Likewise, there is the Charanga, whose distinctive instrumentation is the violins, along with the transverse flute and the timbal. In this format, without a doubt, the best-known are the Aragón orchestra, from Cuba, and the Broadway orchestra, from New York.

The Sonora format, in which the main characteristic is that the melody is carried by two trumpets, also transcended. Here the piano plays a fundamental role and another instrument that stands out is the timbalito. It is a kind of bongo, but bigger and played with "sticks". It is something like a middle ground between the bongo and the timbal.

But what happens when you add instruments other than the usual ones? One option was to find a name for each one, but the simplest option turned out to be to call them "Combo".

This word indicates the combination of different instruments, which can include trombones, saxophones, clarinets, electric guitars, drums or any other. This is where a group as important as the Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, or in Venezuela, Federico y su Combo Latino, the latter, precursor of Venezuelan salsa, gets its name from.

In my case, the arrangements are written for a trumpet, two trombones, piano, bass, electric guitar, drums, congas, timbales and bongo and it was with them that I recorded "Komanda" (See on Youtube), as well as "Noches de Moscú" (See on Youtube).

And although I have the possibility of performing with other formats, this is the one that condenses the sound I imagined from the beginning and is the one I would like to be able to reach everywhere.

En un video anterior les comentaba sobre los distintos formatos de grupo para los cuales ya yo tengo los arreglos escritos y que me pueden acompañar. Allí les hablé sobre el sexteto con vibráfono, que es el formato más pequeño.

Sin embargo, la manera como fue concebido el proyecto desde el principio, es con lo que podríamos llamar el formato de Combo. ¿Pero de dónde sale ese nombre para un grupo de salsa?

En la música cubana se estila que las agrupaciones tengan un nombre, según el estilo musical y la instrumentación. Así tenemos el caso del *Septeto, que es la formación más tradicional del son cubano, que incluye la guitarra, el tres y la trompeta. Igualmente, existe la Charanga, cuya instrumentación distintiva son los violines, junto a la flauta travesera (también llamada transversa) y el timbal. En este formato, sin duda alguna, los más conocidos son la orquesta Aragón, de Cuba, y la orquesta Broadway, de Nueva York.

Asímismo trascendió el formato de Sonora, en la que la característica principal es que la melodía es llevada por dos trompetas. Aquí el piano pasa a jugar un rol fundamental y otro de los instrumentos que destaca es el timbalito. Que es una especie de bongó, pero más grande y que se toca con "palitos". Es algo así como un término medio entre el bongó y el timbal.

¿Pero qué pasa cuando se suman otros instrumentos distintos a los acostumbrados? Una opción era buscarle un nombre a cada uno, pero la opción más sencilla resultó llamarlos "Combo".

Esta palabra lo que indica es la combinación de distintos instrumentos, que puede incluir trombones, saxos, clarinetes, guitarras eléctricas, baterías o cualquier otro. De aquí es que toma su nombre una agrupación tan importante como el Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, o en Venezuela, Federico y su Combo Latino, este último, precursor de la salsa venezolana.

En mi caso, los arreglos están escritos para una trompeta, dos trombones, piano, bajo, guitarra eléctrica, batería, congas, timbal y bongó y fue con los que grabé Komanda" (Ver en Youtube), así como "Noches de Moscú" (Ver en Youtube).

Y aunque tengo la posibilidad de actuar con otros formatos, este es el que condensa el sonido que yo imaginé desde el principio y es con el que me gustaría poder llegar a todas partes.
