Veteran's Day 2025, Remembering the Fallen

vscsummitoh.us
Having served in the United States Army, Veteran's Day is always a tough day for me. Like Memorial Day, I like to remember those who served and gave their lives for the ideals in which they believe. I have had relatives who have served in the Revolutionary War (American War in Britain) and one who died in those battlefields. My grandfather served in the Pacific during World War II and my uncle in in the Vietnam conflict. Subsequently, I served in the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, however I was he only fool to dedicate more than 20 years to the country as a reservist and full time soldier.
Farther back my family even traces back to Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor. It seems that throughout history we can't escape conflict and violence, especially in the name of religion. I know Charlemagne would often use conversion to Catholicism at the sword point, I guess covert or die is a very good motivator. It's not a tactic exclusive to him, it's been used over and over in human history.
I have seen men and women die in the name of patriotism, and I won't forget their sacrifices. They all knew what they were risking and deserve to be remembered. Every time we put on the uniform we knew the risks, but believed out nation could make a difference. It's a shame politicians now runs wars, not generals. Generals are in it to win, politicians are soft and scared to go to the bathroom by themselves.
I really have come to hate wars. In the US the goals change from administration to administration, and the US withdrawal inevitably lead to absolute disaster. ISIS took over Iraq and the Taliban took over Afghanistan, so what really was achieved? Men and women died for nothing... My friends died for nothing...
Anyway, today I'll feature some bands with material covering military service...
Were are these wars really worth the human cost? In the end, the answer is no. And it always has been...
Anyway, let's move onto those who celebrates those who fought even though they didn't do so themselves. Welcome to Three Tune Tuesday!

Sammy Hagar
Sammy Hagar has always been one to support the military and his efforts aren't unappreciated. He's one of the rockers that cares about those who serve to keep freedoms protected. He even produced the song "Remember the Heroes" in 1983.

Metallica
One of my favorite bands of all time, they have always been supporters of the troops through thick and thin. One of their greatest songs celebrates the fallen, my brothers and sisters, in "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

Alice in Chains
One of my favorite Seattle bands, "Rooster" couldn't put it better. It's all about staying alive!

That will do it for this Veteran's Day. I miss my brothers and sisters lost to battle, and those later lost to suicide. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and have a great day!

Happy Veteran's Day to you! My dad was in the Navy during the war in Vietnam and he always gets uncomfortable when people thank him for his service.
I do too, it feels like we accomplished nothing and or brothers and sisters died for nothing. I understand your Dad

Great minds think alike, today my ttt was for Armistice Day.
I was listening to a 94 year old British veteran who was in tears saying what was it all for. The state of the people today in the world, why did they all sacrifice their lives. It really was a poignant interview and the first two weeks in November are always a tough time, I knew a few friends who are no longer with us.
I'm glad you didn't get sucked into the service there in Great Britain. I don't know why I sacrificed so much of my life for this nation only to see it all falling apart. World War II was horrible, as is any war. I have scars that will never heal. I do understand my friend @coinjoe who spends may nights drinking coffee, it's hard to sleep with nightmares and so many bad memories.
Nah, I had a lot of friends who were killed in Iraw and Afghan. Most of my tour was spent on a FOB and we took incoming occasionally. No big deal. most of my stuff is self inflicted survivors guilt shit and unresolved stuff from other service related crap. Therapy has been helping a great deal as has getting out and staying away from the black hole that is the unhealthy "social media". Living life again has actually helped me out a great deal.
That said, my father-in-law, who did see a lot of shit in Vietnam has nightmares constantly. We talk often. In fact I am one of the few he can talk to about his experiences with openly. Therapy doesn't seem to help him much, and I think it helps him to talk to someone who has at least been in a combat zone and understands it.
Either way, there are things a person should never see, and once seen, cannot be unseen and appear in our minds and dreams whther we want them to or not. Not sure how we ever make them go away. We just have to learn to cope.
It sounds like your father in law really ended up with the worst of the PTSD. I think we all have it to one extent or another. That survivors guilt is something was all just learn to live with sadly...
Yeah. I think keeping busy is what helps me the most. I know it does my pops in law. He does lots of wood work and stuff during the day. Nights alone are the worst for him. They are for me as well when I’m alone with my thoughts. But you get it.
Thank you for your service and everyone else that served in the armed forces for our country!
All veterans are deeply appreciated!💪🤗
Thank you my friend!

STOPAfter 9/11, I was close to volunteering. I'm glad I didn't. I have come to dislike all war and consider myself a pacifist.
That said, happy veteran's day! My grandfather was in WW2. He was on the beach at Normandy. But he never wanted people to thank him. He also came to hate war.
We all come to hate war, it's ugly and scars you for life. I only joined because of 9/11, and you really were smart not to sign up. I always have such divided feelings on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, I can never say happy on those days. I've known too many men and women who died to make it happy.
I'm glad your grandfather survived Normandy, many didn't. I think it's a nice gesture for people to say thank you, but they have no idea what horror we have gone through. Your grandfather in particular, in his generation that was what you did. You fought for your country.
I was in 11th grade in 2001 and turned 18 shortly after in 2002. I got the same feeling and came close. I’m also glad I didn’t. These great guys were used & abused and lied to. Always lies with these wars. !PIZZA !ALIVE !LADY
I told everybody I encountered today they should look up “bonus army.”

Those songs are heartwarming and brings a lot of emotions
For Whom the Bell Tolls hits hard when I listen to it
Rooster, I’m pretty sure that song is written by Jerry Cantrell, the guitar player. It’s about his dad in the Vietnam war. I think I got that from a Guitar world magazine many years ago. 🤷♂️
It’s fun song to play on a dreadnought acoustic guitar.
It was all about surviving, which is what you have to do in times of war. It is a fun song though!

As far as I know my pops didn’t know Rooster, but I think my pops would have liked the song! He passed in 93 when I was a kid so never heard it as far as I know but he would have liked it!
It is indeed! !PIZZA !LADY !ALIVE

Nice Rock & Roll Picks!
Alice In Chains opened for Sammy & Van Halen in 1991, Sammy was smart and saw the new wave of rock coming and said to the band, “dude we gotta bring them out with us so the fans know we are with it! “

My pops was ruined by Vietnam
He passed away at 42 in 1993 largely linked to agent orange issues later in life. I respect the troops with all my heart! But I do think the powers that be used and abused these young people. My dad included and those sent to Middle East on lies later. I don’t blame the troops, they were lied to and used. I didn’t know you served brother! Cheers to all the fallen! Those lost during the conflict but also those who lost their lives much later but related to it. Uncle Sam used & a used them. It’s infuriating!
These songs reminds us the bravery of our heroes
