Europe’s Largest Fortress with a Side of Salmon
Today’s step count won’t impress any fitness tracker, 6k steps, thanks to hours of sitting in the car on our way home from “La douche France.” But sometimes the road gifts you something better than numbers.
Not too far from the Belgian border, we decided on a “quick stop.” You know the kind, stretch your legs, snap a photo, back on the road. Except this time, the stop happened to be at the largest fortified castle in Europe. When I say massive, I mean it: thick stone walls rising like cliffs, gateways that look like they’ve swallowed armies, and a presence that humbles you the moment you step through.
And then came the twist: hidden behind those fortress walls was not just history, but a gastronomical restaurant. So what started as “let’s just peek inside” turned into a sit-down lunch. The dish was simple but precise, perfectly cooked salmon, broad beans, and vegetables that carried as much flavor as the centuries-old stones around us. It felt like time-travel with a fine-dining detour.
So yes, only 6k steps today. But when those steps include walking through castle gates, standing in the shadows of history, and savoring a meal you didn’t plan for, I’d say that’s worth more than the number on the tracker. Sometimes the road home gives you a parting gift, and today’s was unforgettable, and allows for another follow up post later on!

Nice surprise indeed! Hehe...well, that's definitely better than being underwhelmed by its size...lol! That's awesome about the restaurant, but I'm curious, if gastronomy is dealing with food, then what makes a gastromomic restaurant different from a regular restaurant? 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Well... A regular restaurant feeds you, it provides food, which is (hopefully) good. A gastronomical restaurant turns food into art. The plates are carefully crafted and designed, up to the millimeter, painted with different colors, and an explosion of tastes. It you go for the full experience, you will have 5 to even 12 different courses in your meal, each with a plate that makes you cry because it is so small (or a large plate with very little on it), yet, at the end of your meal, you are definitely satisfied, while at the same time also having all nutrients you need (and not way too much either). It's French Cuisine ;-)

Ah, OK, I see, and I must say that such a dining experience sounds pretty amazing. I can honestly say that I've never been to a restaurant like that. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

It is an experience on its own indeed! And everything has to be according to the "etiquette", so even the way the waiter serves you is according to these guidelines...
Well, between having a father that was a chef, and two sons who are chefs (on Michelin star level, for real), I get to experience this quite often :-D lol
