If you’ve been on Hive long enough, you’ve felt that sting. You craft a thoughtful post—editing photos, formatting headers, and sharing something you’re proud of. You hit Publish, refresh your notifications… and then: silence. A few cents from loyal followers, maybe a friendly comment, but the Big Whales? They swam right past you. No @appreciator, no @ocdb, no @curie.
The usual explanations—“It’s a popularity contest” or “Whales only vote for friends”—don’t hold up once you look at the data.
I’ll be honest: I wrote this post for myself as much as for you. I see posts everyday getting "juicy" upvotes while my own—which I believe carry more weight and effort—get bypassed. It’s frustrating. I analyzed 30 days of voting behavior from the Top 25 curators on Hive using HiveSQL. This is the only "truth" I can prove with data, even if it’s only part of the story.
The result? It’s not a conspiracy; it’s a system of patterns, constraints, and human habits. Understanding these patterns explains why your masterpiece was skipped and, more importantly, how to get noticed.
1. The Effort Filter: Why 800 Words is the Threshold
Curators responsible for millions of Hive Power don’t read every post. They use proxy signals, and word count is the most significant one. Posts under ~500 words are often ignored not because they’re bad, but because they don’t signal enough effort or depth.

Curators operate in silos, focusing on specific communities. If you post elsewhere, you might as well be invisible. Your content needs to land where the curator actually looks.
This is where many authors fail. They post in a general community (like "Hive" or "OCD") hoping everyone will see it. If you aren’t posting in their specific community, you simply don't exist in their daily workflow.

3. The Tag Strategy: Triggers, Not SEO
Tags aren’t just for search—they signal specific curation teams. Some tags trigger votes; others get ignored. Generic tags like #blog are rarely effective. You have to be surgical with your choices.

4. Discovery vs. Habits: Unique Authors Matter
We often complain about "friends voting friends," but the data shows that several curators have an active mission to find new people. The key is to understand the ratio between unique authors and "Daily Favorites."
Here’s a snapshot of unique authors vs daily favorites:

Maybe the most important lesson.
Curators are risk-averse. They wait to see social validation: comments, organic votes, traction. Posting before peak activity ensures your content is visible when the curator is active.

Tip: 1–2 hours runway lets Social Proof accumulate, signaling low-risk and high-quality content.
6. The Whale Landscape: Effective Hive Power
Top curators vary widely in effective Hive Power. Some, like appreciator, distribute selectively; others, like blocktrades, are extremely scarce.

7. The Truth About Delegations
One final myth to dispel: Do you need to delegate to get a vote? For the Top 25 curators, the data suggests: No.
While some community-specific bots require it, the heavy hitters like appreciator, curie, and ocdb show no significant correlation between delegation and upvotes in their organic curation. They are looking for content that makes Hive look good to the outside world. Your Hive Power is better kept in your own account than used as a "bribe" that rarely works for high-tier curation.
Conclusion: Strategy Beats Guesswork
If you were ignored, it was likely a combination of these factors:
- Timing Mismatch: You posted during or right after the curator's peak, leaving zero time for "Social Proof" to accumulate.
- Wrong Door: You used a front-end or community that the target whale doesn't monitor.
- Tag strategically: Match tags to curator triggers, not general reach.
- Low Signal: Your post was "fine," but at 400 words, it didn't give the curator enough proof of effort to justify the risk of a large upvote.
My Personal Take: To Adapt or Not to Adapt?
Looking at this data, the path to a whale vote is clear: post at a specific time, in a specific community, with a specific length, and probably with a mountain of photos.
Will I do all of this? Probably not. I’m not going to turn my blog into a cookbook or force myself to take a hundred photos when I know I'm not a photographer. I won't write bilingual posts just to chase a tag. However, I might make small concessions—tweaking my posting time or being more deliberate about my community choice.
To say I don't care about the upvotes would be a lie. We all want our effort to be recognized. But more importantly, I believe that the more the reward pool is distributed to authors who put real effort into diverse topics, the more value Hive has in the long run. A diverse Hive is a healthy Hive.
I hope this data helps those of you who are willing to pivot your strategy. The whales swim in predictable paths; it's up to you if you want to jump into their wake or keep swimming your own way.

My goal has always been better rewards distro especially to the smaller users on the platform who put in a lot of effort. Short-form and long-form.
That is the million dollar question of course. I do feel that overall hive is turning into a cookbook or photo album, posts about other Nices are often neglected, regardless if they do add value to hive or not.
I did try to use ai to find under rewarded posts, but then it is hard to give a description of quality. A betting post of a user with a positive roi, posting his bets in advance could be gold for oen while it is rubbish for another. This is valid for all types of content. I do think that human curators are more or less needed, each with a different interest from financial to arts, from sports to food.
Let them propose posts to a curation account and let a curation account hand out votes twice a day. That should even the field a little bit.
Will give it some more thinking.
For a frondend it is maybe a good idea to not show communities but let people configure interest and scan on tags connected to those interest.
I think people are always trying to find a community that will reward the time and efford they put in their posts. Some will never find, because there are not communities for everything yet at hive. And for some niches, there are so many posts that curator cannot read all of them...
I do agree with that last statement and they are only human. No blames to them, regardless that I would like to see the main curator account spread multiple topics.
That's why your analysis about the time frame they are usually only is important. They can only curate when they are curating. Simple, yet many (me included) didn't think about it.
Too soon and your post will be simply oversnowed by all other posts. Also they also have a limited number of votes they can cast, so when they ran out of power they ran out of power.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

I like what you have compiled here. I think at the end of the day along with the social aspect, HIVE is kind of a game and learning to play the game isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can game the system without gaming the system if you know what I mean.
Is sometimes feel indeed of the gamification of social media combined with a popularity contest. The social aspect is indeed an important factor. But just like in real life one can debate how genuine the comments on the whale posts are.

This is an eye opening post. I can speak from being on chain for 8 years and having pretty much next to no votes from these big accounts except leo.voter which has supported my content for years.
i’m almost willing to be its front end when it comes to my stuff. i post on inle
It could be that the inleo fronted does decrease the chance on an upvote of the curation trails. Not sure about that, I do think that there is some truth in that. I did try inleo premium for one month at the end of last year, and overall I did need the upvote of inleo to go above the dollar value. And then they did upvote my post only on 42% of the posts, so that did return a negative ROI.
I do like feature of all 3 the front ends I do use. If you don’t post bout financial things, Ecency could be a good one to try.
Good point. I have posted through InLeo for years. I do like the experience for long form through PeakD though, it's a fantastic editor. That's one of the blessings on Hive, there are so many options. And whale accounts have their favorites for sure.

Not really changing the way or where I post - especially given that a good part of my posts are about wildlife, that go to specific niches, this is a great in depht view on the voting patterns and curious info, thanks a ton!
The best to stay in the game, is to play like you want. Just like you I will not try to catch those votes, but I don't mind if they do land. Like I wrote, I will change the posting schedule, easy change to make with scheduling to give my posts the best change to be seen and to get some interaction going.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

That is very interesting data, thank you for taking the time to compile and present it, that must've been quite the effort. I hope you get some of those big votes for that...
Some triggers are also the right voters. If an old and trusted hiver votes on your post, the chance that it attracts a whale is higher. Like a signal voter.
The other thing that would be interesting - does payout management influence? 100% HP or 50/50? Or comment rewarder?
Just in case you want to spend even more time crunching data 😅
I didn't think about the payout management. I don't think that it will have a big influence, because I am unsure if this is visible in all front-ends. In peakd it can be seen in the feed by the symbol, on inleo you need to hover over the value of a post to see if HBD is part of the payout and in it the same as within inleo. I don't know if a curator has time to check this.
I even doubt if curators do use read the complete article.

Interesting read, it’s a good reminder to stay careful and not follow hype blindly.
I do agree. I also wont drastically change my behavior. Nor will I write about different topics but I do will have a better look at the tags and posting schedule trying to give my posts more attention so that there is a bigger chance on interactions.

Great analysis! I've been curating for Curie since 2018, but have been idle for more than a year. Many things have change but I think the foundation remain (at least the way I curate for Curie) : discover exceptional content, and would be better if the author is actively engage with community (quality comments, adding value to the community in one way or another). The general idea is unknown author should keep post quality content, and curator will find em. And curators are lurking into many community and hashtags.

Thanks. I do really appreciate Curie, because I do see a difference between their votting pattern and how the other curation trails are doing this. It feels that Curie is more all over the Hive blockchain, while the other tend to stay within their our communities. Which I do feel as a problem, for sure with some of them having a delegation of multiple millions.
Also I do appreciate all the manual curators. And yes, I do consider them most of the time blindsided because they do miss my posts, but they are also only human with a certain time frame in which they can operat, having taking multiple posts into account and then is it easier to stay within the communities you are used to. I only hoped that they would spread out their votes over more topics, my fear is that Hive is turning into a cookbook, travel agency or photo album. The more diverse the content on Hive the more appeal we do have to the outside world. When you do arrive fresh here and see al the same topics in trending or hot, you are more or less forced to that route.

Here's my two cents from a curator's pov.
Community matters. Some communities are better managed than others, they mute crap making it easier for curators to look for good content. Some communities intrinsically have good quality content due to the nature of their genre and that draws more curators there. Likewise, there are some communities curators avoid due to the known low quality content.
Good curators aim to look for as many unique authors as possible, and experienced curators usually have built up a good spider sense. AI has made their job incredibly difficult. If they have to spend too much time analyzing content, it's better to move on to others. Tough for the genuine authors, but curators only have so many hours a day for Hive.
Some curators take a holistic approach when curating. They look at more than just the quality of the content. Is the user here to milk? Is it all take and no give? Do they engage with others or just here to throw out a post everyday? Are they here for the long or short term?
Whales and curation guilds have high effective HP, but don't ignore the middle class, many are manual curators and real people active on Hive every day.
Authors have to help themselves if they are looking for more support. Some, post exclusively one type of content and only engage with other authors of the same. That limits their exposure to other curators and the wider community.
Building a good solid reputation as a quality content creator helps a lot. If someone is known to have abused in any way before, it is much more difficult to gain curators' trust again. Curators don't want to be labelled as bad curators
All solid points here, and refreshing to read to view of a curator. I have no clue how the big curator groups do work.
But I always did had in the back of my mind, the curators are humans with a limited amount of time. And of course, by nature, we all have topics we like more than others.
I do try to step out of my comfort zone and see if I can discover new authors who write about what I do like, the feed is constantly drying up, and I do love to interact. I do appreciate all genuine replies I get, just like I try to write a genuine comment or none.
Relationships are a corner stone of a good hive, but it takes times to build up these relations. Most of us do give up after a certain point.

The main problem I see with the fact that nearly all the voting power comes from Curation groups is that it provides zero incentive for users to buy and power up Hive. One of the things I always liked about Hive is that it's was possible to meet like-minded people and actually give or receive an upvote that is worth something which feels nice on both ends.
Now, many are just hunting for curation group upvotes bringing specific content. it looks like Splinterlands stopped providing their weekly challenges which I'm quite sure made the number of posts on it collapse.
Imo curation groups, or Hive at its core should have some kind of requirements in that users need to have a minimum amount of Hive Power to be curated. Just so many are using Hive as a cash cow, withdrawing everything they earn from big upvotes they systematically are getting. This is what has been killing Hive.
Don't know if I do agree with a minimum of HP, but maybe a KE below a certain point. You do want to support new authors.
Maybe the biggest problem is that all the curators together have to much delegation, so too much power. I did write several posts about the fact that the most here or just posting for the money with the lowest effort possible. But that is their right.
I am pretty sure that if a whale would write about a banana, banana post would pop up like nothing.
Blame that on those who are too lazy to curate themselves and delegate most or all their HP out for returns. I get it if they're inactive users, but there are many who are still active every day and have no HP left to reward others directly. That's one big reason why curation guilds are so powerful

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

This is an awesome post! It touches on a lot of key points... I do not just curate stuff I like, there are other factors like you mentioned above.
I think this is one of the most important parts of this post. Writing what you want to write about is a huge part of being a sustainable blogger.
IMO, too many people write things they don’t want to write just to increase their chance of getting upvotes. Getting upvotes alone isn’t really fun and some people try to turn HIVE into a job. Turning HIVE into a job can be a huge mistake imo because then it stops being fun for most people.
Having fun on HIVE is very important. Even if we don’t always get along as a “HIVE community,” we can still have fun and try to find a positive path forward when there is conflict.

Just like you I do appreciate them, but won't chase them. If they come great, otherwise the comment I do receive are my fuel and I do see them as appreciation.
I know the whales are busy people. There are people who do lots of manual curating to try and highlight good content, but everyone has different tastes. I don't take rewards for granted, but don't rely on them either.
The most important discovery of me when writing this post, was the timing. Too soo and your post will be snowed under, too late and the post will face the same. I never looked at it this way. So, I do try to find a good timeslot for my posts. That is the only change I made. Not only for curation but also for other people to discover. With sheduling this isn't so hard.
It's tricky with people spread around the world, so I don't think about that aspect too much. It's one of the things that could change if Hive grows a lot.
