Hello!

Today our elderly and very fuzzy housemate Smudge turned 21 years of age!

Happy Birthday Smudge!

Smudge's version of a birthday treat

21 is definitely a very high age for a cat probably equivalent to 95 or 100 in Hooman years.

Whereas we are definitely aware that Smudge is an old lady kitty, she's still doing remarkably well. Granted, she is completely blind in one eye and partially blind in another, but she still enjoys a decent quality of life and loves her treats and her sunny spots!

Smudge loves her sunny spots, and particularly under the Mom-Hooman's Reiki table!

Her old bones are a little bit stiff and she doesn't really jump up on things anymore so we make sure that she has many comfortable sleeping spots at ground level, and the Hoomans help her up on things when needed.

She also has a low-sided kitty litter box so it's easy for her to get in and out, and so far she has not been tempted to leave us little "presents" in places outside the box!

She is particularly fond of the morning ritual where the Hoomans eat breakfast and close the door to the other cats outside and she gets to have her special treats the side of the table while the humans eat.

Smudge definitely has her quirks and idiosyncrasies, including sometimes sitting at a random place and regaling us would rather loud "song," hence we sometimes call her "Opera Cat." It's not because she is in pain or anything she just is trying to orient herself and because her hearing is also not terribly good she tends to be rather loud.

One of Smudge's "superpowers" is the ability to always be out of focus.

Her very long and super soft fur, combined with her "camo" tortoiseshell coat patterns often makes it look like she's out-of-focus, even when she's not.

The Hoomans even thought their camera's were malfunctioning, but picturing Smudge next to one of the other cats resulted in that cat being in perfect focus, but Smudge still appearing blurry.

Since you never really know how long a very old being is going to live, we're very grateful for every day we have with Smudge.
