Warhammer 40k - Detachment Review 15 - Chaos Daemons, Daemonic Incursion
Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - Datasheet Review post!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit in the game of Warhammer 40,000
The last of the Indexes! A new challenge!
Right, I am finally ahead and by my best estimations as I explained in this Post, I should be able to keep ahead of the release curve and get the remainder of the Indexes reviewed before those Codex releases.
So I embark on a new challenge. I have calculated that there are roughly 148 reviews to do. I have chosen my frequency and have given myself 96 days to review them all.
Today is Day 45/96.
I have reviewed 67/148.
Time elapsed: 46.87%
Review Completion: 45.27%
Now more than 1% behind.
Hobby Fund - Working myself into the clear
With my hobby posts, I generate a hobby fund. 50% of the income goes into the fund. At the moment I put all my HBD earned from Warhammer posts into my alt account @zakl.hobbyfund.
I am collecting funds in the following ways:
- Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD
- Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD
- Selling some of the collection to friends.
At the current count I am paying off some hobby debts. I still have $226 to pay off!
Every bit counts!
Back to the review!
Army Rule Recap
The Shadow of Chaos Rule was all about board control, gaining wounds and causing some mortal wounds to units within your Shadow of Chaos.
This Detachment will add something to that!
Detachment Rules - Warp Rifts
Each time a Legiones Daemonica unit from your army arrives using the Deep Strike ability, if it is set up wholly within your army's Shadow of Chaos OR wholly within 6" of a Greater Daemon with whom it shares a common faction keyword (Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeetch, then that unit can within 6" of an enemy unit instead of 9".
Thoughts
Used to arrive suddenly within close proximity, usually works quite well if you mean to charge into the enemy. a 6" charge is fundamentally far easier to roll than a 9" charge!
This can mean that you can be aggressive or reactive.
Enhancements
Every Detachment has its own Enhancements to put on Characters. You cannot put 2 Enhancements on 1 hero, Epic Heroes cannot take them either, and you are limited to 3 of the 4.
Here are the Enhancements for the Daemonic Invasion
The Everstave - 25pts
Tzeetch Daemons only. Add 1 to the Strength of the Bearer's Ranged Weapons and increase the Range of such weapons by 3". While the bearer is within your Shadow of Darkness, add 2 to Strength to the Bearer's ranged weapons and 6" to the Range instead.
This is amazing of course. Best to use on a Lord of Change for a S10 Bolt of Change and a 21-24" range!
Soulstealer - 15pts
Slaanesh Models only. Each time the bearer destroys an enemy model with a melee attack, then roll a dice, add 1 to the result if you are within your army's Shaodw of Chaos. On a 4+ this bearer regains 1 lost wound.
Again, I would probably put this on the Greater Daemon and then keep regenerating wounds.
A’rgath, The King of Blades - 20pts
Khorne Daemons only.
Plus 1 to Attacks and Strength of melee weapons equipped by this model. If this model is within the army's Shadow of Chaos, add 2 to Attacks and Strength to melee weapons instead.
Very straightforward. Get more attacks and harder hitting.
The Endless Gift - 45pts
Nurgle Daemon units
only
5+ Feel No Pain. But when in the Shadow of Chaos, it is a 4+ Feel No Pain instead!
On a Great Unclean One and done!
Stratagems
Stratagems are used in the battle as an elective rule that can be employed in crucial moments. All armies have access to Universal Stratagems but each Detachment has their very own Stratagems that they can use.
This is what the Daemonic Incursion can do.
Warp Surge - 1CP
Used in your Charge phase on a Daemon unit that is within your Shadow of Chaos.
This unit can Charge in a turn that it Advanced.
This is always a good type of Strat to have and a dangerous one for the opponent. You need to remember that the opponent is capable of this move!
Denizens of the Warp - 1CP
Used in the Movement Phase to Deep Strike a unit more than 6" away from enemy models (instead of 9")
This Strat can do the 6" Deep Strike, even outside of the areas that the Shaod of Chaos covers. You could use this to Deep Strike a Greater Daemon and then bring in the other units using the Shadow of Chaos created by the Greater Daemon!
Draught of Terror - 1CP
Used in the Shoot or Fights Phase.
Your units get +1 Armor Penetration and if the enemy units are Battle-shocked, then re-roll the Wound Roll as well.
Can help to do a great deal of damage! Would synergies with units that force Battle Shock tests.
Daemonic Invulnerability - 1CP
Used in the enemy's Shooting Phase. One unit can use this until end of phase. The unit can re-roll Invul saves of 1.
This is a bit limited. I would have expected it to have a "Full re-rolls if the unit is in the Shadow of Chaos. But no such thing...
Corrupt Realspace - 1CP
Used at the Start of the Command Phase to Sticky Pbjective an objective that you are in range of.
Sticky (As is coined) means that the Objective stays under your control until the enemy takes it away at the start or end of a turn.
The Objective is also Corrupted and this means that the area 6" away from this objective is within this army's Shadow of Chaos.
Always a useful tool to place on your home objective on Sticky and walk away from it.
The Realm of Chaos - 1CP
Used at the end of the opponent's turn, two Daemon units that are not locked in combat are removed from the board and can be brought in as reserves in your next turn.
This I feel works really well with this Detachment's main gimmic of bringing things down closer to the the enemy. It is something that can be used to remove units from danger or to put the units into an area where there are enemies should the opponent be fast.
Conclusion
The Last strat will be the main one used, as well as Warp Surge for the Advance and Charge. The Enhancements are cool but as I said... they have the feeling of fitting on Greater Daemons.

@zakludick
I heard rumors trat Games Workshop will kill the chaos demons as a stand alone fraction. Do you know anything about it?
I have heard the same thing at my hobby store from the one store owner.
I think it is likely to happen, though I must confess - I am not sure why they are doing it!
Each one of the dedicated Legions have a Detachment in each that focuses in synergies in using their appropriate Daemons in their army.
So Khorne Daemons in a World Eaters army, Nurgle and Death Guard, Tzeentch and Thousand Sons and Slaanesh and Emperor's Children.
There are people who play pure Daemons, especially the Shadow Legion that works with Be'lakor.... Maybe it will drive sales for Chaos Marine players buying more Daemons and Daemon players buying more Chaos Marines... but I think that it will probably swing the other way again... eventually.
