For a while now, I’ve been seeing this payment processor here in Ecuador. Since I’m pretty much a crypto maxi—a Hive maxi, to be completely fair—I paid little attention to it. But I’ve been forced to take a second look.

You see, it makes sense to piggyback off accepted ideas. The fact that people here in Ecuador are already doing commerce by scanning a QR code isn’t something I should ignore. So, I did the only reasonable thing: I downloaded the app myself.

Turns out, it’s nothing more than a bank account wrapped in a QR blanket. Nothing revolutionary about the system itself, but it has accomplished something I can’t discard: the familiarity of paying with your cell phone, of not having to use cash for every single transaction. That shift in thinking is huge—and very positive for us Hiveans, for us proponents of the HBD economy.

Then today, almost as if the planets aligned, my friend @beelzael brought up this app again. He and I have been discussing onboarding his business into the HBD economy for months now. And today, he officially launched—I couldn’t be happier. But he had one request.

He asked if I could adapt my tiny Point of Sale app to be more like De Una, the very app that inspired this blog. What he didn’t know was that I’d already been thinking about it for over a week. At that point, it almost felt like a sign from the universe.

Now, I feel like I have to defend myself. An argument could be made that we already have QR scanning, so another Point of Sale app isn’t needed. Fair. That was my initial thought too. But I’m trying to be sneaky here.

Allow me to present my case—it’ll only take a few minutes.

What is the "De Una" Experience?

You go to a burger joint and order yourself a juicy quarter-pounder with triple cheese. You realize you didn’t bring cash, but you notice they take De Una. So you ask how much the bill is.

A sign with a big, easy-to-scan QR code is right there by the cashier. The nice lady tells you to go ahead and scan it, then she leaves you to it while preparing your order.

You, hungry as you are, pull out your phone, scan the QR, and it opens the app. The vendor info is prefilled—you just enter the amount, hit send, and you’re done. Simple.

And Our Point of Sales?

I say “our” because there are at least four Point of Sale apps floating around already. Even my friend @ecoinstant was working on one. We can’t seem to stop building them. Bullish, if you ask me.

But our approach is different. In our version, the cashier is the one generating the invoice and handing it to the customer.

Back to the burger joint example: the cashier would pull out her phone, go to hivedebit.com (for example), generate a QR invoice, and show it to the hungry human. He or she would then scan it, pay, and only after that would the cashier prepare the order. That little detail isn’t insignificant.

Why Not Just Transfer the Funds?

I always bounce ideas off my brother @joseamenac—it’s both a sanity check and a way to sharpen projects. While explaining the Point of Sale concept, he asked me the obvious: “Why not just transfer directly with Keychain?”

He’s right—you could. But there’s risk.

For one, mistyping a username is a real danger (ask me how I know). Aging eyes, fatigue, and an autocomplete failure once left me sending funds into the void. Not fun.

Equally important, direct transfers cut out the incentive system we’re building with SpendHBD and @distriator. Without invoices, cashback rewards don’t work.

Enter Ok-Pay

Credit goes to my wife, the ever-creative artist sitting five feet away from me. She came up with the name: Ok-Pay! Casual, natural, and exactly the kind of phrase someone might say in the moment. Perfect.

The app has two simple functions:

Vendors create their own QR, print it, and stick it in front of the register.

Customers scan the QR with Keychain, which takes them to the Point of Sale with vendor details prefilled. They enter the amount, hit pay, and—boom—it generates the invoice memo needed for @distriator discounts.

Open Source

Of course. The code’s already up on my GitHub, and the app is deployed. In fact, @beelzael could sell one of his fancy rye breads tomorrow—just print the QR and slap it at the register.

So yeah, you could say the micro-app is delivered.

So What Now?

For now, not much. Well, that’s not entirely true. My wife is making it look proper—logo, colors, design polish. Meanwhile, the app itself is functionally complete.

Ok Pay!

And while we wait for Apple’s blessing of @snapie, why not build more tools? Right?

Spanish Translation

Desde hace un tiempo he estado viendo este procesador de pagos aquí en Ecuador. Como soy prácticamente un cripto maxi—para ser justo, un Hive maxi—le había prestado poca atención. Pero me he visto obligado a darle una segunda mirada.

Verás, tiene sentido aprovecharse de las ideas que ya están aceptadas. El simple hecho de que aquí en Ecuador la gente ya esté haciendo comercio escaneando un QR no es algo que yo deba ignorar. Así que hice lo único razonable: descargué la aplicación yo mismo.

Resulta que no es más que una cuenta bancaria envuelta en una manta de QR. Nada revolucionario en el sistema en sí, pero sí logró algo que no puedo descartar: la familiaridad de pagar con tu celular, de no tener que usar efectivo para cada transacción. Ese cambio de mentalidad es enorme—y muy positivo para nosotros los Hiveanos, los que promovemos la economía en HBD.

Hoy, casi como si los planetas se alinearan, mi amigo @beelzael volvió a mencionar esta app. Él y yo llevamos meses hablando de cómo incorporar su negocio a la economía en HBD. Y hoy la lanzó oficialmente—no podría estar más contento. Pero me hizo un pedido.

Me preguntó si podía adaptar mi pequeña app de Punto de Venta para que fuera más parecida a De Una, la aplicación que inspiró esta entrada. Lo que él no sabía es que yo ya llevaba más de una semana pensando en ella. En ese momento, casi se sintió como una señal del universo.

Ahora siento que debo defenderme. Podría decirse que ya tenemos escaneo de QR, y que otra app de Punto de Venta no es necesaria. Justo, esa también fue mi primera reacción. Pero aquí estoy tratando de ser un poco astuto.

Permíteme presentar mi caso—solo tomará unos minutos.

¿Qué es la experiencia De Una?

Vas a una hamburguesería y te pides una jugosa doble con triple queso. Te das cuenta de que no trajiste efectivo, pero notas que aceptan De Una. Así que preguntas cuánto debes pagar.

Un cartel con un QR grande y fácil de escanear está ahí mismo junto a la caja. La cajera te dice que lo escanees, y mientras tanto ella empieza a preparar tu pedido.

Tú, con hambre como estás, sacas tu celular, escaneas el QR y se abre la app. La información del comercio ya está precargada, solo ingresas el monto, presionas enviar, ¡y listo!

¿Y Nuestros Puntos de Venta?

Digo “nuestros” porque ya hay al menos cuatro apps de Punto de Venta circulando. Incluso mi amigo @ecoinstant estuvo trabajando en una. Parece que no podemos dejar de hacerlas. Bullish, si me preguntas.

Pero nuestro enfoque es diferente. En nuestra versión, el cajero es quien genera la factura y se la muestra al cliente.

Volvamos al ejemplo de la hamburguesería: la cajera sacaría su celular, entraría a hivedebit.com (por ejemplo), generaría una factura con QR y se la mostraría al cliente hambriento. Él o ella escanearía, pagaría, y solo después de eso la cajera prepararía el pedido. Ese detalle no es insignificante.

¿Por Qué No Simplemente Transferir los Fondos?

Siempre reboto ideas con mi hermano @joseamenac—es tanto un chequeo de cordura como una manera de mejorar los proyectos. Mientras le explicaba el concepto del Punto de Venta, me hizo la pregunta obvia: “¿Por qué no transferir directamente con Keychain?”

Tiene razón, se puede. Pero hay riesgo.

Por un lado, equivocarse al escribir el nombre de usuario es un peligro real (pregúntame cómo lo sé). Vista cansada, fatiga y un autocompletar fallido me dejaron alguna vez enviando fondos a la nada. Nada divertido.

Igualmente importante: las transferencias directas eliminan el sistema de incentivos que estamos construyendo con SpendHBD y @distriator. Sin facturas, las recompensas de cashback no funcionan.

Entra Ok-Pay

El crédito va para mi esposa, la artista creativa que tengo a cinco metros. Ella inventó el nombre: Ok-Pay! Casual, natural, y justo la clase de frase que alguien podría decir en el momento. Perfecto.

La app tiene dos funciones simples:

El comerciante genera su propio QR, lo imprime y lo pone en la caja.

El cliente escanea el QR con Keychain, lo que lo lleva al Punto de Venta con los datos del vendedor ya precargados. Luego ingresa el monto, paga y listo—todo mientras se genera la factura necesaria para los descuentos de @distriator.

¿Código Abierto?

Por supuesto. El código ya está en mi GitHub y la app está desplegada. De hecho, @beelzael podría vender mañana mismo uno de sus panes de centeno—basta con imprimir el QR y colocarlo en la caja.

Así que sí, se puede decir que la micro-app ya está entregada.

¿Y Ahora Qué?

Por ahora, nada. Bueno, no del todo. Mi esposa está dándole un mejor diseño—logo, colores, estética. Mientras tanto, la app como tal ya está terminada.

Y mientras esperamos la bendición de Apple, ¿por qué no seguir construyendo más herramientas? ¿Cierto?
