My wife has been telling me I need to get back to working on Hive Snaps. I know she’s right, but I also know taking a week off was probably the right move. Going too fast and adding too many things only leads to headaches and bugs.

That said, this morning I poured myself a strong cup of joe and opened the project again. My wife has been working on the art for the app, which I think looks fantastic. We have also registered the account for our little mascot, @snapie. Those who have been around for a while might get a weird sense of déjà vu, but fret not – it’s just inspired by my old project, nothing more. After all, it was also my wife who created the art and name for @helpie all those years ago.

Unlike back then, I won’t be using @snapie to curate a community. My idea for the account is to start a curation effort for people who will be using my app. Easy to say, hard to implement. The more I think about curating snaps, the more I think it will have to be a manual task. Otherwise, I’m inviting abuse, and we all know how that goes.

I’ve had the good fortune of talking a lot with my friend @betoman about Hive, and more precisely about Snaps. Him being a computer nerd like myself – but one who loves to dig deep into projects – gives me a bit of an edge, I have to say. For one, I get feedback from someone I trust, and two, I get feedback from someone who is practically brand new to this place and its dynamics.

As you might imagine, I am integrating some of the requested features for the new release. I hope to launch the app officially before the month ends, and honestly it seems very feasible at the moment. I solved two of the main issues this morning (I thought it would take longer), so I’m feeling optimistic. That, of course, can change, so let’s knock on wood.

Some of the requests, though, I will respectfully leave out of the final release. Since my idea is for Hive Snaps to be intuitive, simple, and welcoming, I don’t think adding too many buttons or detailed post information, like upvote percentages by user, makes much sense. The simpler approach – do you like it? Then upvote it – makes more sense to me. Who cares if so and so already upvoted it.

One feature that I’m almost afraid to tackle, but I know I must, is the rendering of tweets. A lot of people share tweets on Snaps, and providing just a link seems “not good enough” to me. I hope I don’t break a lot of things trying to build a parser for tweets, but I think I found some code – a cheat sheet, if you will – from the guys at Skate Hive. Shoutout to @mengao, who has been extremely helpful throughout this whole process.

I did promise an iOS version to follow the Android release, and trust me, it will happen. But I have to wait for my brother to help me out there. He’s been very busy working on another project for Hive. This might be revealing the cake before the party starts, but he’s been working on a Hive Taxi app – an Uber for us Hiveans.

We’ve been doing lots of back and forth, him and I, breaking down the logic of such a thing. It’s amazing how complex these ideas get once you break them down into components. That said, building our own Uber would be life-changing, I think. I’ve already had a few people show interest here locally, and even a trusted Hivean from Nigeria has been very vocal about the need for this app.

Yeah, I know it’s Sunday. But when you work for yourself, as I do, there’s no such thing as a day off. I’m probably going to drink my ten cups of coffee and sit at this computer until my back says, “It’s time to stop.”

Mi esposa me ha estado diciendo que necesito volver a trabajar en Hive Snaps. Sé que tiene razón, pero también sé que tomarme una semana libre probablemente fue lo correcto. Ir demasiado rápido y agregar demasiadas cosas solo trae dolores de cabeza y errores.

Dicho eso, esta mañana me serví una taza fuerte de café y abrí el proyecto de nuevo. Mi esposa ha estado trabajando en el arte para la app, que creo que se ve fantástica. También registramos la cuenta para nuestra pequeña mascota, @snapie. Los que han estado por aquí un tiempo quizás sientan un déjà vu raro, pero tranquilos, está inspirada en mi proyecto antiguo, nada más. Después de todo, también fue mi esposa quien creó el arte y el nombre de @helpie hace todos esos años.

A diferencia de antes, no usaré @snapie para curar una comunidad. Mi idea con la cuenta es iniciar un esfuerzo de curación para las personas que usen mi app. Fácil de decir, difícil de implementar. Cuanto más pienso en curar snaps, más creo que tendrá que ser una tarea manual. De lo contrario, estoy invitando al abuso, y todos sabemos cómo termina eso.

He tenido la suerte de hablar mucho con mi amigo @betoman sobre Hive, y más precisamente sobre Snaps. Siendo él un nerd de computadoras como yo, pero uno que le encanta profundizar en los proyectos, me da un poco de ventaja, tengo que decirlo. Primero, recibo retroalimentación de alguien en quien confío, y segundo, de alguien que es prácticamente nuevo en este lugar y sus dinámicas.

Como imaginarán, estoy integrando algunas de las funciones solicitadas para la nueva versión. Espero lanzar la app oficialmente antes de que termine el mes, y honestamente parece muy posible en este momento. Resolví dos de los problemas principales esta mañana (pensé que me tomaría más tiempo), así que me siento optimista. Claro, eso puede cambiar, toquemos madera.

Algunas de las solicitudes, sin embargo, las dejaré fuera de la versión final con respeto. Mi idea es que Hive Snaps sea intuitiva, simple y acogedora. No creo que agregar demasiados botones o información detallada de las publicaciones, como porcentajes de votos por usuario, tenga mucho sentido. El enfoque más simple – ¿te gusta? entonces dale upvote – me parece más lógico. A quién le importa si fulano ya le dio upvote.

Una función que casi me da miedo abordar, pero sé que debo, es el renderizado de tweets. Mucha gente comparte tweets en Snaps y dar solo el enlace me parece “no suficiente”. Espero no romper muchas cosas intentando hacer un parser para tweets, pero creo que encontré un código – una especie de chuleta – de los chicos de Skate Hive. Saludos a @mengao, que ha sido extremadamente útil en todo este proceso.

Prometí una versión para iOS después del lanzamiento en Android, y créanme, sucederá. Pero tengo que esperar a que mi hermano me ayude con eso. Ha estado muy ocupado trabajando en otro proyecto para Hive. Tal vez esté revelando el pastel antes de la fiesta, pero ha estado trabajando en una app de Hive Taxi, un Uber para nosotros los Hiveanos.

Hemos estado de ida y vuelta, él y yo, desglosando la lógica de algo así. Es increíble lo complejas que se vuelven estas ideas cuando las partes en componentes. Aun así, construir nuestro propio Uber sería algo que cambiaría vidas, creo.
