A whisky I finally enjoy and creating my own cocktail
Ok, that's a bit of an overstatement, I don't think I'll ever enjoy any whisky. Let's just say I don't dislike this whisky like I normally do the others.
The Orchard House by Compass Box was hubby's treat to himself last Christmas, not that he needs an excuse to treat himself when buying a bottle of whisky. He normally buys a bottle every Christmas after the annual whisky reviews are announced by his favourite YouTubers. He was delighted when he saw the Orchard House in our local supermarket.
At first glance, the Orchard House looks very different from traditional whiskies and stood out easily on the supermarket shelf. In fact, if it wasn't on the whisky shelf, you wouldn't guess it was a bottle of whisky. The green box, the name, and the fruits hanging on the front of the box give a very Adam and Eve vibe. And what do you think of immediately? Yes, apples!! I think the design and marketing is very clever. Even if you have a very good product, you need a good marketing tactic nowadays as the whisky market is so crowded.
The Orchard House is 46% ABV non chill filtered natural colour blended whisky. Hubby says the distillery is a bit different from other blended whisky because they actually tell you what's in the blend. Most don't. If you go on the Compass Box website here you'll find the diagram below which list out what they have blended. There are 6 single malt whisky, with 2 that make up 75%, and both have apple notes, making it the dominant aroma. It's very distinctive as soon as I open up a bottle and pleasant on the nose. Even the non-whisky drinker in me can smell it, hence my first comment that I don't dislike it. The other 4 single blend make up 24% and they all have a sweet fruity flavour. And finally, there's 2% blended malt whisky, making a total of 101%, if like me, you like to fact check things 😀
This is the only whisky so far that I smelled and tasted and thought this is nice. Despite the floral notes and use of bourbon casks, it wasn't sickly sweet. I wouldn't go as far as saying it converted me, but it's definitely not something that whacked me across the head to put me off.
Then I had an idea! We had opened a bottle of lychee flavour sake a few days ago. It was a gift from a friend last year, but unfortunately it didn't live up to its expectation and we hadn't figured out what to do with it. Why not try to make a cocktail? The lychee flavour sake had a floral note, similar to the Orchard House, and all we needed was to mix it with some soda water. I played around with the proportions, and think I ended up with 1 part Orchard House, 2 parts sake and about 7 or 8 parts soda water. My first attempt at mixing my own cocktail wasn't too bad. Then hubby suggested to try is with his bottle of Knob Creek that he bought back from America during our previous road trip. Using the same proportions, the Knob Creek cocktail had a much stronger and deeper taste. Hubs liked that better, and I stuck with my Orchard House lychee cocktail.
It was fun making my own cocktail. I might raid his whisky collection again.

Blended whisky is usually quite a bit smoother than some of the single malt and single barrel stuff you find around here. It's always surprising to me how much darker the bourbons are versus the Scotch style whisky.
do you think that's because you can control the blend to make it however you want? Just a thought, what do I know about whisky 😄
It depends on the distillery. Many newer places haven't been around long enough to source their own stuff yet, so they curate already aged end product from other distilleries and then blend them together to get the flavor profile that they are looking for.

This is the first time I've played around with mixing drinks mainly because of the bottle of sake. I just watered it down if the taste was too strong
I don't tend to read up much on whiskies and I had not heard of Compass Box until I saw it on the drinks menu at our afternoon tea last week. As you say the branding is not typical.
I am not a big one for cocktails, but I have had some nice ones. We have various drinks at home so could experiment.
My other half turns their nose up at most whiskies so I don't generally have to share :)

That's awesome, creating your own cocktail to use the lychee sake! 😃
As far as my favorite whiskies go, here are my top three:
• Evan Williams™ brand Cherry Whiskey –sweet & smooth, even straight!
• Western™ brand Honey Pepper Whiskey –a little "bite" but nice!
• Fireball™ brand Cinnamon Whiskey –a nice cinnamony tingle to the tongue!
The first one of the three is fruity and sweet, but I don't find it sickly sweet. It's is blended so mildly that I can sip it straight, although a true whisky connoisseur would probably cringe and say there must be a tablespoon (at least) of water to do it "properly!" 😂
The other two, have a little bit of a "bite" to them, but not that much (in my opinion). The Western™ brand Honey Pepper whiskey has a small bite to it. They have other flavors (peach, orange, and one other I forget at the moment), but the Honey Pepper is my favorite and I think it's their best quality blend, too. Each of the flavors of Western™ has a different cowgirl hottie on the label, a definitely bonus... 😁 ...and a good way to tell if you're buying the same brand I've tasted.
The Fireball™ brand Cinnamon Whiskey has more of a "bite" to it, but I like it. I often get cinnamon candy and eat it until my mouth is tingling nicely before I stop eating it... LOL! That's what Fireball™ will do with one sip, if you do it straight.
These whiskeys are also "medicinal" for me. If I get a tickle in my throat that won't go away, or if my allergies give me a post-nasal drip that runs down my throat, a sip of any of these whiskies, straight, will clear it right up! 😊
We saw the Fireball when we were in America the other year, mainly because hubby hates cinnamon and we were teasing him about it. I'm sure he would run a mile if anyone drank that in front of him!!
I've heard of strong spirits having medicinal uses before, not sure if there's something in that, or because they knock you out and you feel better, but who cares if they work, that's the most important thing 😄

I never managed to find a whiskey to enjoy because of its specific taste, and I actually ended up slowly not drinking alcohol at all, rather than on New Year's Eve when I have a bit of champagne, but this Orchard House sounds interesting!
I'm lucky that I can try out all of hubbys whiskey but I have never tried one that I like. I don't mind alcohol but wouldn't say I enjoy it, it's more to do with the occasion, and anyway I drive most of the time so can't really drink
It was nice seeing how curiosity led to experimentation instead of simply giving up. Many people assume whisky must be consumed in a specific way, whiskey or not, your approach shows that personal enjoyment matters more than tradition.
You are bang on about marketing. I too would walk past this not knowing it was for whisky. Having seen the label it is not something I would drink based on the malts in it.
That was great you made a LUT cocktail though! It is always great when we concoct things we love.
