STREET ART #164 – Large wall paintings in Aalborg (Denmark)

avatar

Every year, street artists are invited to the city and contribute to the fact that Aalborg now has more than 80 wall paintings. Usually it is KIRK Gallery that takes the initiative through the "Out in the Open" project. This is a few of them. It was by chance that I saw the first one. Walked right past. One of my sisters knew about the others. She made sure to show them to me.

The title is «Trine». It has been painted by the French artist Hopare. Before Hopare came to Aalborg, he had studied traditional clothing in Denmark. The starting point for him was to interpret one of the most important works by the Danish painter Ludvig August Smith (1820-1906). When Smith painted, he often used a model called Catrine Nielsen, also called Trine. About his artwork, Hopare says that Trine is immersed in thoughts, looking at us in a melancholic way.

The «Nightingale and the Rose» is painted by Curtin Hylton. Hylton has been inspired by the buildings in the area, as well as the story of Oscar Wilde - The nightingale and the rose. This mural has bee painted it on the wall of the lift up to the apartments in the block. He specializes in spray painting and often creates muals that show nature and wildlife combined with the cityscape. In this painting we find both birds and flowers. It is a great splash of color in the otherwise dull building I think. A real eye-cathing painting from far away.

The artist behind this giant painting is the Spanish Manolo Mesa. The title is 'Una casa anónima'. Mesa was born in 1989 and started painting in his hometown since 2002. He is world-renowned for his still-life wall paintings. What he does, is using ceramics and porcelain that he finds in the places he works.

This work is done by Australian artist SMUG (Sam Bates). He only uses spray paint when creating these large photorealistic paintings. His work has no title. He never gives his paintings a title. He believes that the works are interpreted differently from person to person. I have posted a photo of this work before, but it was not completely finished.

Aalborg definitly has great street art.

Wow every town needs a little more of this! Imagine gathering local money to have local artists create local art and spend the income in town! Everyone wins!
