The drachmas I had left / Las dracmas que me quedaron

It ceased to circulate 23 years ago, like many other coins of European countries due to the arrival of the euro. Thus the drachma, the Greek money whose history began in the seventh century BC, also became an object of collection, and that is what I come to share here, some banknotes and coins that I have from that country.

Dejó de circular hace 23 años, como muchas otras monedas de países europeos debido a la llegada del euro. De esta manera la dracma, el dinero griego cuya historia comenzó en el siglo VII a.C., pasó también a ser objeto de colección, y es lo que vengo a compartir aquí, algunos billetes y monedas que tengo de ese país.

I lived there for some years of my childhood and this money was left over from what my parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles or godparents gave me to buy those things that any child likes: ice cream, chocolates, small objects, etc. When we left the country I didn't spend it, I brought it with me along with some toys, books, clothes, etc.

Viví allí algunos años de mi infancia y este dinero me quedó de lo que me daban mis padres, abuela, tíos o padrinos para comprar esas cosas que le gustan a cualquier niño: helados, chocolates, pequeños objetos, etc. Cuando nos fuimos del país no me lo gasté, lo traje conmigo junto a algunos juguetes, libros, ropa, etc.

In total I have three 100 bills, seven 50 bills and coins of 10, 2 and 1, totaling 676 drachmas. I looked up information on the value of the currency at that time and this amount was about 5 dollars. I remember for example that with 100 drachmas I could buy myself a large chocolate, I almost always spent the money on goodies, today I do it too 😂.

En total tengo tres billetes de 100, siete billetes de 50 y monedas de 10, 2 y 1, lo que suma 676 dracmas. Busqué información del valor de la moneda en esa época y esta cantidad era aproximadamente unos 5 dólares. Recuerdo por ejemplo que con 100 dracmas podía comprarme un chocolate grande, casi siempre gastaba el dinero en chucherías, hoy también lo hago 😂.

Veamos pues estas monedas y billetes que tengo y algunos de sus interesantes detalles, comencemos por las monedas.

The two 1 drachma coins I have were issued in 1980, on one side they have the figure of a ship and on the other the face of Konstantinos Kanaris, naval officer and hero in the Greek War of Independence against the Turks (1821-1832).

Las dos monedas de 1 dracma que tengo fueron emitidas en 1980, por un lado tienen la figura de un barco y por el otro el rostro de Konstantínos Kanáris, oficial naval y héroe en la Guerra de Independencia griega contra los turcos (1821-1832).

The 2 drachma coins (I also have two), were issued in 1982. On one side are two shotguns and some branches and on the other the image of Georgios Karaiskakis, a prominent military leader who won many battles in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire to achieve independence.

Las monedas de 2 dracmas (también tengo dos), se emitieron en 1982. En una cara están dos escopetas y unas ramas y en la otra la imagen de Georgios Karaiskakis, destacado líder militar que ganó muchas batallas en la lucha contra el imperio otomano para lograr la independencia.

And to finish with the coins I own, the 10 drachma coins, again two, were issued in 1984 and 1986. These are of a different material, they are not bronze but silver, on one side they have the figure of the atom and on the other the face of the Greek philosopher Democritus, born around 460 B.C. When I did some research I found that although he wrote on many subjects, he is mostly known for his atomic theory of the universe.

Y para finalizar con las monedas que poseo, las de 10 dracmas, nuevamente dos, fueron emitidas en 1984 y 1986. Estas son de otro material, no son de color bronce sino plateadas, en una cara tienen la figura del átomo y en la otra el rostro del filósofo griego Demócrito, nacido alrededor del año 460 a. C. Al investigar un poco encontré que aunque escribió sobre muchos temas, es sobre todo conocido por su teoría atómica del universo.

One of the things that I consider regrettable regarding the adoption of the euro by most countries in Europe is that an important part of the identity was lost, the coins and banknotes reflect the history and culture of each nation and although there are references to each one in the euros, it is not the same, the diversity was significantly reduced, what do you think about this?

Una de las cosas que considero lamentables respecto a la adopción del euro por la mayoría de los países de Europa es que se perdió una parte importante de la identidad, las monedas y billetes reflejan la historia y la cultura de cada nación y aunque hay referencias a cada una en los euros, no es lo mismo, la diversidad se redujo significativamente, ¿qué opinan de esto?

Let's go now to the banknotes, the 50 and 100 drachmas. As I said at the beginning I have ten, seven of 50 and three of 100. The first one I show you is the oldest of this very small collection.

Vamos ahora con los billetes, los de 50 y de 100 dracmas. Como dije al principio tengo diez, siete de 50 y tres de 100. El primero que les muestro es el más antiguo de esta muy pequeña colección.

As you can see in the photo, it was issued in 1964. On one side it has the profile face of Arethusa with two dolphins, in Greek mythology she is a nymph who is related to rivers and springs, and on the other side of the banknote we can see a shipyard.

Como pueden ver en la foto, fue emitido en 1964. Por un lado tiene el rostro de perfil de Aretusa con dos delfines, en la mitología griega ella es una ninfa que está relacionada con los ríos y manantiales, y en el otro lado del billete podemos ver un astillero.

The other six 50 drachma bills that I have were issued a few years later, in 1978, and the figure that appears there is that of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon.

Los otros seis billetes de 50 dracmas que tengo fueron emitidos unos años después, en 1978, y la figura que aparece allí es la del dios griego del mar, Poseidón.

As you can see, the banknote has many details representing this mythology deity, such as dolphins, the trident and the ship.

Como pueden ver, el billete tiene muchos detalles que representan a esta deidad de la mitología, como delfines, el tridente y el barco.

The reverse of the banknote depicts a scene from the war of independence of 1821, showing the heroine Laskarina Bouboulina pointing towards the fortress of Palamidi, located in southern Greece.

En el reverso del billete está representada una escena de la guerra de independencia de 1821, donde aparece la heroína Laskarina Bouboulina señalando hacia la fortaleza de Palamidi, ubicada en el sur de Grecia.

And to conclude, I show you the 100 drachma banknote, the three I have were issued in 1978. Its main image is the profile of the goddess Athena, one of the most important divinities in Greek mythology, symbol of wisdom, warrior and protector of the cities.

Y para concluir, les muestro el billete de 100 dracmas, los tres que tengo fueron emitidos en 1978. Su imagen principal es el perfil de la diosa Atenea, una de las más importantes divinidades en la mitología griega, símbolo de la sabiduría, guerrera y protectora de las ciudades.

On the other side, on the left, the banknote presents Adamantios Korais, a humanist who with his contributions helped to achieve the independence of Greece from the Turks, and on the right side is the Monastery of Arkadi, a symbol of the resistance on the island of Crete against the Ottoman Empire.

Por el otro lado en la izquierda, el billete presenta a Adamantios Korais, humanista que con sus aportes ayudó a lograr la independencia de Grecia de los turcos, y a la derecha está el Monasterio de Arkadi, un lugar símbolo de la resistencia en la isla de Creta frente al imperio otomano.

For now I don't plan to sell them and although I have not researched, surely these coins and bills have some value in the numismatic market.

Por ahora no pienso venderlas y aunque no he investigado, seguramente estas monedas y billetes tienen algún valor en el mercado numismático.
