Hello, friends of HiveBook Club. I continue this personal path through the books that have come into my hands and that, in one way or another, dialogue with our reality. On this occasion I want to share with you a deeply human, painful and necessary novel, Of Love and Shadows, by the Chilean writer Isabel Allende, originally published in 1984. I confess that previously I had not had the opportunity to read it, so this is the first time I have it in my hands.

This book is not a simple story. It is a novel where love and denunciation walk together, where the most intimate feelings develop in the midst of fear, repression and imposed silence. Reading it today is still a powerful experience, because it reminds us that there are times when loving is also an act of courage.

Of Love and Shadows is set in a Latin American country under a military dictatorship, clearly inspired by Chile in the seventies. It tells the story of Irene Beltrán, a young journalist, and Francisco Leal, a photographer, who meet almost by chance and begin a relationship marked by the investigation of a disappearance that those in power want to keep hidden.

As they move forward in the search for truth, they discover not only the horror of repression, but also the risk involved in looking straight at what many prefer not to see. The love that arises between them is not an ingenuous or idealized love, it is a love that grows little by little in the shadows, in the midst of danger, driven by the need to cling to something human when everything around them seems to be falling apart. The themes addressed in the book continue to occur in today’s societies, which is why reading a work like this has great relevance today.

Isabel Allende achieves in this novel a very powerful balance between intimate history and collective history. The reader not only accompanies the protagonists in their relationship, but also confronts the pain of mothers, everyday fear, absences and the silent violence of a system that ends up dehumanizing people.

As is customary, I want to share a fragment of the book that sums up very well the spirit of this work.

A simple phrase, but one loaded with meaning. Throughout the novel Isabel Allende suggests that love is also a process of mutual discovery, of acceptance and resistance in the midst of fear within a brutal context. She reminds us that love is not escape, but resistance, learning and refuge.

Reading Of Love and Shadows today inevitably made me think of our current times. Of forced separations, of exile, of families fragmented by political or economic decisions. Many have learned to love at a distance, to sustain bonds under adverse conditions, to live between hope and fear. This novel dialogues with all of that, even though it was written several decades ago.

Isabel Allende, born in 1942 in Lima and raised in Chile, is one of the most important voices in contemporary Latin American literature. Due to her own experience of exile, her work reflects this deeply. Of Love and Shadows is part of that early stage in which the author writes from the open wound of the dictatorship, turning memory and fiction into tools of resistance.

This novel speaks of love, memory, justice and the need not to forget. It reminds us that the shadow exists, but also that even there light can appear.

As in previous publications, I share photos of my physical copy. Reading this book on paper, turning its pages calmly and pausing in its silences, makes the experience even more intense. It is a reading that leaves a mark and settles within us.

Continuo este camino personal por los libros que han llegado a mis manos y que, de una u otra forma, dialogan con nuestra realidad. En esta ocasión quiero compartir con ustedes una novela profundamente humana, dolorosa y necesaria, De amor y de sombra, de la escritora chilena Isabel Allende, publicada originalmente en 1984. Confieso que anteriormente no había tenida oportunidad de leerlo, así que es la primera vez que lo tengo en mis manos.

Este libro no es una historia simple. Es una novela donde el amor y la denuncia caminan juntos, donde los sentimientos más íntimos se desarrollan en medio del miedo, la represión y el silencio impuesto. Leerlo hoy sigue siendo una experiencia fuerte, porque nos recuerda que hay épocas en las que amar también es un acto de valor.

De amor y de sombra está ambientada en un país latinoamericano bajo una dictadura militar, claramente inspirada en el Chile de los años setenta. En ella nos cuenta la historia de Irene Beltrán, joven periodista, y Francisco Leal, fotógrafo, quienes se conocen casi por casualidad y comienzan una relación marcada por la investigación de una desaparición que el poder quiere mantener oculta.

En la medida que avanzan en la búsqueda de la verdad, descubren no solo el horror de la represión, sino también el riesgo que implica mirar de frente aquello que muchos prefieren no mirar. El amor que surge entre ellos no es un amor ingenuo ni idealizado, es un amor que crece poco a poco en la sombra, en medio del peligro, motivado por la necesidad de aferrarse a algo humano cuando las cosas a su alrededor parecen desmoronarse. Los temas tratados en el libro continúan dándose en sociedades actuales, por lo que tiene mucha vigencia hoy leer una obra como está.

Isabel Allende logra en esta novela un equilibrio muy poderoso entre la historia íntima y la historia colectiva. El lector no solo acompaña a los protagonistas en su relación, sino que también se enfrenta al dolor de las madres, al miedo cotidiano, a las ausencias y a la violencia silenciosa de un sistema que acaba deshumanizando a las personas.

Como ya es costumbre, quiero compartir un fragmento del libro que resume muy bien el espíritu de esta obra.

Una frase sencilla, pero cargada de sentido. Isabel Allende sugiere a lo largo de la novela que el amor es también un proceso de descubrimiento mutuo, de aceptación y resistencia en medio del miedo de un contexto brutal, nos recuerda que el amor no es evasión, sino resistencia, aprendizaje y refugio.

Leer De amor y de sombra hoy me hizo pensar inevitablemente en nuestros tiempos actuales. En las separaciones forzadas, en el exilio, en las familias fragmentadas por decisiones políticas o económicas. Muchos han aprendido a amar en la distancia, a sostener vínculos en condiciones adversas, a vivir entre la esperanza y el miedo. Esta novela dialoga con todo eso, aunque haya sido escrita hace varias décadas.

Isabel Allende, nacida en 1942 en Lima y criada en Chile, es una de las voces más importantes de la literatura latinoamericana contemporánea. Debido a su propia experiencia de exilio, su obra refleja profundamente esto. De amor y de sombra forma parte de esa etapa inicial en la que la autora escribe desde la herida abierta de la dictadura, convirtiendo la memoria y la ficción en herramientas de resistencia.

Esta novela habla de amor, de memoria, de justicia y de la necesidad de no olvidar. Nos recuerda que la sombra existe, pero también que incluso allí puede aparecer la luz.

Como en publicaciones anteriores, comparto fotos de mi ejemplar físico. Leer este libro en papel, pasar sus páginas con calma y detenerse en sus silencios, hace que la experiencia sea aún más intensa. Es una lectura que deja huella y se asienta en nuestro ser.
