Today I'd like to review a book I read while in high school, and which I recently reread. It's more of an entertaining story than a novel, but a way to reflect on ourselves and how others and the world in general perceive us.

Hoy me gustaría reseñar para ustedes un libro que leí mientras estaba en bachillerato, y que recientemente releí, una historia que más que una novela para entretener es un instrumento para reflexionar sobre nosotros mismos y como nos perciben las demás personas o el mundo en general.

This novel tells the story of Gregory, a young, honest and hard-working man who suddenly wakes up and is about to go to work and realizes that he has transformed into a large and repulsive insect. At first, his sister is the only member of his family who feels empathy for him and does her best to clean his environment and get him food, but later she ends up despising him and forgetting about him as the others did. In this way, Gregory has no choice but to adapt to his new situation and fend for himself in the midst of difficulties until the end.

Esta novela narra la historia de Gregory, un hombre joven, honesto y trabajador que de pronto al despertar y disponerse a ir a su trabajo se da cuenta que se ha transformado en un insecto grande y repulsivo, al inicio su hermana es el único miembro de su familia que siente empatía por él y hace lo posible por limpiar su entorno y conseguirle alimentos, pero posteriormente ella termina despreciándolo y olvidándose de él como lo hicieron los demás, de esta manera a Gregory no le queda más remedio que adaptarse a su nueva situación y valerse por sí mismo en medio de las dificultades hasta el final.

This novel has many elements to analyze, in my opinion it is full of metaphors of life, for me it is a great critique of the system that values man according to his level of productivity: as long as you are young, strong and in good health, the world will recognize you as someone productive and therefore valuable, but when for some reason your productivity decreases then you are a disposable being. Unfortunately, many people have short memories and therefore quickly forget what your work did for them. Although it seems terribly unfair, Gregory's ending in this story is very necessary because through him and his misfortune we can put into context complex themes such as loneliness, ingratitude and above all, dehumanization.

Esta novela tiene muchos elementos para analizar, en mi opinión está llena de metáforas de la vida, para mi es una gran crítica al sistema que valora al hombre de acuerdo a su nivel de productividad: mientras seas joven, fuerte y tengas buena salud el mundo te reconocerá como alguien productivo y por lo tanto valioso, pero cuando por alguna razón baja tu productividad entonces eres un ser desechable. Lamentablemente muchas personas tienen memoria corta y por lo tanto olvidan rápidamente lo que hicieron por ellos. Aunque parezca terriblemente injusto el final que tiene Gregory en esta historia es muy necesario porque a través de él y su desgracia podemos poner en contexto temas complejos como la soledad, el desagradecimiento y sobre todo la deshumanización

As the story progresses we realize that family relationships within Gregory's house are based on economic benefits, while he was the provider he was respected and even loved, he was worthy of being cared for, free to express opinions, but once he could not fend for himself or communicate he was marginalized, relegated to the solitude of his room, isolated as if he had done something wrong, as if he were not a victim but a culprit, and this is what society does to people who are different from the rest, who have some disability, "if they can't adapt to the world or to the majority, they can fend for themselves." In fact, the capitalist system generally sees these people as mere social expenses, just as Gregory's family saw him, as a burden.

A medida que la historia avanza nos damos cuenta que las relaciones familiares dentro de la casa de Gregory se basan en los beneficios económicos, mientras él era el proveedor era respetado y hasta amado, era digno de ser atendido, libre de emitir opiniones, pero una vez que no pudo valerse por si mismo ni comunicarse fue marginado, relegado a la soledad de su habitación, aislado como si hubiese hecho algo malo, como si él no fuese una víctima sino un culpable, y esto mismo le hace la sociedad a las personas que son diferentes al resto, que tienen alguna discapacidad, "si no pueden adaptarse al mundo o a la mayoría que se las apañen como puedan" De hecho el sistema capitalista por lo general ve a estas personas como meros gastos sociales, tal como la familia de Gregory lo veía a él, como una carga.

What happened to Gregory might seem absurd, but it's merely a metaphor for the various situations that can occur in life and make you feel useless or dehumanized. This, in turn, could be conditioned by the culture or environment surrounding the individual. With all this, we can only reflect on how we act toward others. We shouldn't value people for what they do, where they come from, or who we think they are. Instead, we should assign unique value to all of humanity. We are valuable simply for existing; being different in some way doesn't diminish our value. Being respectful and empathetic leads us to a healthy coexistence.

Lo que le sucedió a Gregory podría parecer absurdo pero no es más que una metáfora de las diversas situaciones que pueden ocurrir en la vida y que te pueden hacer sentir inútil o deshumanizado, y esto a su vez podría estar condicionado por la cultura o el entorno que rodea al individuo. Con todo esto no nos queda más que reflexionar acerca de la manera como actuamos frente a los demás, no debemos valorar a las personas por lo que hacen, de donde vengan o por quienes creemos que son, sino que debemos darle un valor único a la humanidad entera, valemos por el simple hecho de existir, ser diferentes en algún sentido no nos resta valor. Ser respetuosos y empáticos nos lleva a una sana convivencia.
