The Diary of Anne Frank [Book Review] ESP/ENG
Today I bring you my opinion about one of the best known books in history and which is known by many as an icon of the holocaust, although for me it is more a historical and real document, a window of escape through which a girl tells us about her life in one of the most difficult stages of humanity.
Hoy les traigo mi opinión acerca de uno de los libros más conocidos de la historia y que es conocido por muchos como un ícono del holocausto, aunque para mí es más un documento histórico y real, una ventana de escape a través de la cual una niña nos cuenta su vida en una de las etapas más difíciles de la humanidad.
The book, as the title indicates, is a diary that narrates the experience of a Jewish girl who remains a refugee along with her parents and sister, another family and a dentist, all of them had no choice but to live like this to avoid deportation to one of the concentration and extermination camps, and they remained like this for 4 years, unable to speak out loud, or move any furniture, even flushing the toilets at specific times to avoid attracting anyone's attention. And although Ana in the diary mostly concentrates on her life inside the shelter, with all that implies a forced coexistence in total isolation, it also offers the audience a broader picture of what happens outside, that because at no time the inhabitants of the shelter cease to be informed, constantly read the news that their friends bring them from outside, but unfortunately, very close to the end of the war the shelter Ana calls "The Annex" is finally discovered by the Nazis, after being betrayed through an anonymous call.
El libro, tal como el título lo indica, es un diario que narra la experiencia de una niña judía que permanece refugiada junto a sus padres y hermana, otra familia y un dentista, todos ellos no tuvieron más remedio que vivir así para evitar la deportación a alguno de los campos de concentración y exterminio, y permanecieron así durante 4 años, sin poder hablar en voz alta, o mover algún mueble, incluso, bajando la cadena de los retretes a horas específicas para no llamar la atención de nadie. Y aunque Ana en el diario mayormente se concentra en su vida dentro del refugio, con todo lo que implica una convivencia forzada en total aislamiento, también ofrece a la audiencia un panorama más amplio de lo que ocurre afuera, eso porque en ningún momento los habitantes del refugio dejan de estar informados, constantemente leen las noticias que sus amigos les llevan del exterior, pero por desgracia, ya muy cerca del fin de la guerra el refugio al Ana llama "El Anexo" finalmente es descubierto por los nazis, luego de haber sido delatado a través de una llamada anónima.
After the outcome that we already know that Ana had, it is frustrating to see all the potential she had as a writer (which was her dream) and that ended up wasted, although on the other hand it is a little comforting to know that despite the difficulties of isolation and scarcity, while they were in the shelter no one lacked anything, because the friends they had on the outside were very diligent. Although it is a diary, Ana's narrative is epistolary, as if she were sending letters to a friend named Kitty (but this is actually the name of her diary), yet she demonstrates a very neat writing style, with a rich vocabulary that hints at her early maturity, typical of children and adolescents who have had to live through very difficult situations, but at the same time denotes that she was a cultured young woman who liked to read.
Tras el desenlace que ya sabemos que tuvo Ana resulta frustrante ver todo el potencial que tenía como escritora (el cuál era su sueño) y que terminó desperdiciado, aunque por otra parte es un poco reconfortante saber que a pesar de las dificultades del aislamiento y la escases, mientras estuvieron en el refugio a nadie le faltó nada, porque los amigos que tenían en el exterior fueron muy diligentes. A pesar de que se trata de un diario, la narración de Ana es de tipo epistolar, como si estuviese enviando cartas a una amiga llamada Kitty (pero este en realidad es el nombre de su diario) aún así ella demuestra un estilo de escritura muy pulcro, con un rico vocabulario que deja entrever su temprana madurez, típica de niños y adolescentes que han tenido que vivir situaciones muy difíciles, pero al mismo tiempo denota que era una joven culta a la que le gustaba leer.
Ana uses her diary as a means to channel her emotions, there she shares her thoughts, and as time goes by we witness how she is acquiring maturity and resilience as well as a great personal growth, but as I mentioned in previous paragraphs, because of the information it contains about the historical, political and social context of the time in which she was living, the diary of this girl also became a very important document that helped to obtain answers, in fact in one of the pages of the diary, she comments that she heard on the radio that someone said that probably all the diaries and letters written at that time, one day would be very important for history, and they were!
Ana usa su diario como un medio para canalizar sus emociones, allí comparte sus pensamientos, y conforme va pasando el tiempo somos testigos de como va adquiriendo madurez y resiliencia además de un gran crecimiento personal, pero tal como mencioné en párrafos anteriores, debido a la información que contiene acerca del contexto histórico, político y social de la época en la que estaba viviendo, el diario de esta niña también se convirtió en un documento importantísimo que ayudó a obtener respuestas, de hecho en una de las páginas del diario, ella comenta que escuchó por la radio que alguien dijo que probablemente todos los diarios y cartas escritos en ese momento, algún día serían muy importantes para la historia, ¡Y vaya que lo fueron!
At the end I was left with a feeling of emptiness, because I already knew that in this story there is no happy ending, not as far as the integrity of the families of the Annex is concerned, but at least I am left with the satisfaction of knowing, that in a way Ana's dream was fulfilled, because today humanity has read her diary which has become a good book that has contributed to complete the history of Europe and the Second World War. Al final me quedó una sensación de vacío, porque ya sabía que en esta historia no hay un final feliz, no en lo que se refiere a la integridad de las familias del Anexo, pero al menos me queda la satisfacción de saber, que de cierto modo el sueño de Ana se cumplió, porque hoy en día la humanidad ha leído su diario el cual se ha convertido en un buen libro que ha contribuido a completar la historia de Europa y la segunda guerra mundial. I read this book so many times.... My first time was when I was on the last year of elementary school and always being fascinated by this book.
It is a touching and sad book, but at the same time it is also full of hope for the new generations.
