Today I am extremely happy because I finally had the opportunity to read The Perfume by Patrick Süskind, and previously I had only seen the movie and when I knew it was based on a book I wanted to read it, but no matter how hard I looked for it I could not find it in any bookstore, however a few months ago my sister came home with a wonderful surprise, and after work, on the way she found a new bookstore that had excellent prices, so she bought some books (including The Perfume) and I got so absorbed in reading it that I finished it in a short time.
Hoy estoy sumamente feliz porque al fin tuve la oportunidad de leer El Perfume por Patrick Süskind, y es que anteriormente yo solo había visto la película y cuando supe que estaba basada en un libro quise leerlo, pero por más que lo buscaba no podía encontrarlo en ninguna librería, sin embargo hace unos meses mi hermana llegó con una maravillosa sorpresa a casa, y es que después del trabajo, en el camino encontró una nueva librería que tenía excelentes precios, así que compró algunos libros (entre ellos El Perfume) y me absorbí tanto en la lectura que lo terminé en poco tiempo.
Overview/Resumen
The story begins with the birth of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, which from that moment proved to be an extraordinary person, although I do not mean it in a good way, what happens is that he had a particular feature, an extremely sensitive sense of smell that made him rival any hound, his mother rejected him and tried to get rid of him, but his crying alerted other people, so the woman was sentenced to death, and since then death itself hovered every place where Jean-Baptiste passed. Although he has a sensitive sense of smell and is able to detect and identify any scent, the protagonist of this story has no scent of his own, which puzzles him, so over time he begins to work with great perfumers from whom he obtains valuable information, but he becomes obsessed with the idea of creating a perfect perfume, which would contain the essence extracted from several young women, something that obviously becomes a real problem for society.
La historia comienza con el nacimiento de Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, el cuál desde ese momento demostró ser una persona extraordinaria, aunque no lo digo en el buen sentido, lo que sucede es que tenía una característica particular, un olfato extremadamente sensible que lo hacía rivalizar con cualquier sabueso, su madre lo rechazó e intentó deshacerse de él, pero su llanto alertó a las demás personas, así que la mujer fue condenada a muerte, y desde ese entonces la muerte misma rondaba cada lugar por donde Jean- Baptiste pasaba. Aunque tiene un olfato sensible y es capaz de detectar e identificar cualquier aroma, el protagonista de esta historia no posee olor propio, lo cuál lo desconcierta, así que con el tiempo comienza a trabajar con grandes perfumistas de los cuales obtiene valiosa información, pero se obsesiona con la idea de crear un perfume perfecto, el cual contendría la esencia extraída de varias mujeres jóvenes, algo que obviamente se convierte en un verdadero problema para la sociedad.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
The novel explores various themes such as hypocrisy of the society of that time that condemned a woman for having tried to get rid of her child, but then the baby is taken to an orphanage where he was treated like garbage, we also know the great contrast between the bourgeoisie and the working class, as if they were two different worlds. On the other hand, the author presents Jean-Baptiste as an anti-hero, that is to say, he is an imperfect protagonist, with mistakes and traumas but who ironically is highly perfectionist, so much so that he borders on obsession. In his passage through life he opted for perfumery because it perfectly matched his extraordinary ability, could there be a better qualified perfumer than him? But in this case the ability of our protagonist is enigmatic, the aromas are presented in this work as a rapturous force that can influence the senses and emotions, especially those of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.
La novela explora diversos temas como hipocresía de la sociedad de esa época que condenaba a una mujer por haber intentado deshacerse de su hijo, pero luego el bebé es llevado a un orfanato donde lo trataban como basura, conocemos además el gran contraste que había entre la burguesía y la clase trabajadora, como si se tratase de dos mundos diferentes. Por otra parte el autor nos presenta a Jean-Baptiste como un antihéroe, es decir, es un protagonista imperfecto, con errores y traumas pero que irónicamente es altamente perfeccionista, tanto que raya en la obsesión. En su paso por la vida se decantó por la perfumería porque encajaba perfectamente con su extraordinaria habilidad ¿habría acaso un perfumista mejor calificado que él? Pero en este caso la capacidad de nuestro protagonista es enigmática, los aromas se presentan en esta obra como una fuerza arrebatadora que puede influir en los sentidos y las emociones, en especial las de Jean-Baptiste Grenouille
I like that the protagonist of this story is different because even though he does what he does you can't consider him a villain, he is an ambiguous character, on the one hand he is dangerous because he is instinctive and also doesn't go by ethics and conventionalisms, but at the same time he is to some extent naive and innocent.
Me gusta que el protagonista de esta historia sea distinto porque a pesar de que hace lo que hace no puedes considerarlo un villano, es un personaje ambiguo, por un lado es peligroso porque es instintivo y además no se deja llevar por la ética y los convencionalismos, pero al mismo tiempo es hasta cierto punto ingenuo e inocente.
In summary, after reading this book I can say that the movie was a very good adaptation of the original material, although obviously there are many more interesting details in the book. The ending could be disconcerting for some readers but I consider that it is up to the free interpretation of each one. In my case I think that Perfume is seen as a synonym of power, the man is always in search of power because it is what makes him stand out from the rest, it grants him favors and elevates him, but once he gets everything he needs, what is left? he feels out of place maybe, I don't know, it's the conclusion I came to after reading such an impressive ending.
En síntesis, después de leer este libro puedo decir que película hizo una muy buena adaptación del material original, aunque obviamente hay muchísimos más detalles interesantes en el libro. El final podría resultar desconcertante para algunos lectores pero yo considero que queda a la libre interpretación de cada quién. En mi caso opino que El Perfume es visto como un sinónimo de poder, el hombre siempre está en la búsqueda del poder porque es lo que lo hace destacar entre los demás, le concede favores y lo eleva, pero una vez que obtiene todo lo que necesitaba ¿Qué queda? se siente fuera de lugar tal vez, no lo sé, es la conclusión a la que llegué luego de leer ese final tan impresionante.

Es una historia interesante, tuve la oportunidad de ver la película y me gustó. El protagonista tiene cualidades llamativas que te hacen reflexionar sobre el destino, las circunstancias y las decisiones.

También vi la película, es buenísima, de verdad una adaptación a la altura de la novela. La actuación de Alan Rickman como siempre estuvo brillante.
