Think Big🧠: Ben Carson's Journey to Excellence

Think Big

Think Big by Ben Carson

I have a belief that you don't need to read all the books in the world. Sometimes, a handful of books, maybe even just 10 could benefit you so well. Books that we return to again and again because their words meet us right where we are when we need them most. For inspiration, for clarity, or simply for a push.

This is my first post in the hive book community and I decided to review the book 'Think Big' by Ben Carson. I have read Ben Carson's Think Big two times now and it's the best decision I ever made. The first time was when I was about 9 years old, my teacher recommended it to me.

The second time I read it was when I was in my lowest point. I felt I had failed in life and I needed to read someone elses story for motivation. I did my first exam to get into Unilag to study engineering but I didn't do pretty well. I failure hit so hard that I lost my morale to study, then I remembered I had an icon whom I looked up to so I decided to read Think Big again.

It worked like magic. I aced my exams and then got into Unilag to study Civil Engineering.

Summary of Think Big by Ben Carson and it's teachings

The renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson wasn't always perceived as the most brilliant as a child. He was usually looked down on by his teachers and his peers.

His mother was the greatest influence in his life. Ben's academic turnaround began when he was in fifth grade. Sonya Carson decided to limit TV time and insisted Ben and his brother read two books a week, and she made sure they wrote book reports to ensure they understood the content of the material. It was like a miracle; Ben went from the worst student in class to being one of the best.

Ben's career then advanced; he went to Yale College to study psychology. He then went to medical school in Michigan to become a neurosurgeon. Ben Carson became more famous for separating the Siamese twins. There is a book on his journey through achieving that in his book 'Gifted Hands.'

I will review that book in another episode.

Key Takeaways in Ben Carson's Think Big

No child is born stupid. With the right motivation and also hard work, you can be the best in your class and achieve great things even outside the classroom.

The book also introduces the "THINK BIG" acronym, which serves as a guide for achieving success:

  • T: Talent—Recognize and develop your natural abilities.

  • H: Honesty—Be honest with yourself and others.

  • I: Insight—Seek wisdom and understanding.

  • N: Nice—Treat others with kindness and respect.

  • K: Knowledge—Continuously seek knowledge and learning.

  • B: Books—Read and learn from various sources.

  • I: God/Inspirational/In-depth prayer—Seek guidance and inspiration.

  • G: Goals—Set and work towards achieving your goals.

Overall, "Think Big" is a motivational guide that encourages readers to pursue their dreams and unlock their potential for excellence.

While I don't really agree with a lot of Carson's world-views and opinions, there is no denying that he really does have his stuff together and is wildly successful. I'm not big on self-help books either because I am happy with my life :)

I just wanted you to get a real comment from a real human on your post. It is nicely written and easy to digest... well done.

šŸ˜‚ I love how straightforward you are
I also love that you don't really fancy self-help books. I was always like that too.

I'm quite young (just 24 years old), I decided to read self-help books ones a while to avoid mistakes. I have made some pretty costly mistakes due to ignorance so I try to just get information and also read people's experiences as often as possible to mitigate those mistakes.

And I really thank you for engaging my post. I really really do appreciate it. šŸ¤šŸ½

when I was around your age I read a book entitled "Investing for Dummies" and I took the advice of the authors. That simple book really changed my financial future and I am very glad I read it because I likely wouldn't have taken the financial steps that I did at such a young age if not for those words... so yeah, self-help books are an important thing if they are written for the right reasons.
