Good afternoon, Hive friends! Since October is the month of horror, today I bring you some recommendations for books that I really liked and that are ideal to start reading at this time of year.
¡Buenas tardes, amigos de Hive! Como octubre es el mes del terror hoy les traigo algunas recomendaciones de libros que me gustaron mucho y que son ideales para comenzar a leer en esta época.
The Dead Zone/La Zona Muerta
We start with a novel by the king of horror, Stephen King. This is one of my favorite books by the author, because the horror stems from the character's psychology and has a powerful impact. The Dead Zone tells the history of Johnny Smith, a high school teacher who, along with his girlfriend Sarah, goes to a fair to have fun like everyone else and then ends up suffering an accident that has terrible consequences. He spends almost five years in a coma and, upon waking up, tries to adapt to a reality that has left him behind (such as his girlfriend who has married someone else), all of which is terrifying in itself. He also faces a terrifying psychic ability that he cannot control and that terrifies him. When Johnny touches people, he suffers extraordinary visions of what is going to happen. One day he touches a politician named Greg Stillson (a character we get to know from the beginning and who shows us the rise of his political career) and what he sees gives him chills and confronts him with a huge dilemma.
Empezamos con una novela del rey del terror, Stephen King. Este es uno de los libros que más me han gustado del autor, porque el terror nace desde la psicología del personaje e impacta. La zona muerta relata la historia de Johnny Smith, profesor de secundaria, que junto a su novia Sarah van a una feria a divertirse como todos los demás y luego termina sufriendo un accidente, que le provoca terribles consecuencias. Pasa en coma casi cinco años y, al despertar, trata de adaptarse a una realidad que lo ha dejado atrás (como su novia que se ha casado con otro), todo esto en sí resulta aterrador. Además se enfrenta a una aterradora capacidad psíquica que no puede controlar y que lo aterra. Johnny al tocar a la gente sufre visiones extraordinarias de lo que va a ocurrir. The Turn of the Screw/Otra Vuelta de Tuerca
This book is written by Henry James and is a horror classic that I recommend you read if you haven't already. The plot of this book begins with a circle of friends in an old mansion, when Douglas reads the writings of a deceased governess about her experiences in her youth. She recounts how she was hired by a single man to take care of his two nephews, who had recently lost their parents. They both live in a country house in Bly, Essex. In the huge mansion, the woman is tormented by paranormal visions of two spirits who, according to her, are stalking the two children to corrupt them. It is a very interesting Gothic novel, and you never know if what is happening is real or just in the governess's head.
Este libro está escrito por Henry James y es un clásico de terror que si no lo has leído te recomiendo que lo hagas. La trama de este libro comienza en un círculo de amigos en una vieja casona, cuando Douglas lee los escritos de las vivencias de la juventud de una difunta institutriz. Allí cuenta que fue contratada por un hombre soltero para hacerse cargo de sus dos sobrinos, los cuales habían perdido a sus padres recientemente. Ambos viven en una casa de campo en Bly, Essex. En la enorme casona la mujer es atormentada por visiones paranormales de dos espíritus que, según ella, acechan a los dos niños para corromperlos. Es una novela gótica muy interesante y nunca terminas sabiendo si lo que pasa es real o está en la cabeza de la institutriz.
The Hell House/La Casa Infernal
Written by Richard Matheson, it is the best haunted house story I have read to date. The Belasco House in Maine, known as The Hell House due to its reputation as the most haunted and dangerous house in the world, is purchased by a very ill and dying millionaire, William Reinhardt Deutsch. Obsessed with his impending death, he hires a group of people to investigate whether there is life after death. They are: Dr. Lionel Barrett, a scientist interested in parapsychology, his wife Edith, and two mediums: Florence Tanner, a mental medium, and Benjamin Franklin Fischer, a physical medium. Their task is to spend a week at Belasco House, where they will investigate the paranormal phenomena that have occurred there. It had previously been investigated twice with disastrous results; only one person came out alive and sane: Fischer. This group of investigators will face unimaginable horrors.

The Outsider/El Visitante
This novel is by Stephen King and follows the story of Terry Maitland, one of Flint City's most beloved citizens: youth league coach, literature teacher, exemplary husband, and father of two girls, who is accused of the brutal murder and rape of a child. Detective Ralph Anderson orders his arrest. However, Maitland has a solid alibi proving he was in another city when the crime was committed, but DNA evidence found at the scene confirms his guilt. How could he have been in two places at once? The mystery surrounding this history is one of the best I've ever read, puzzling and captivating. It's a powerful and raw book.
Esta novela es de Stephen King y sigue la historia de Terry Maitland, uno de los ciudadanos más queridos de Flint City: entrenador de la liga infantil, profesor de literatura, marido ejemplar y padre de dos niñas; que es acusado por el asesinato brutal y violación de un niño. El detective Ralph Anderson ordena su detención.
