📚 Book Review: Purgatorio [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy les vengo a compartir la reseña de un libro bastante peculiar con el que me encontré, pero me dio mucha curiosidad porque transcurre en mi país y se puede apreciar un poco de la cultura de los bailes de tangos que tenemos, entre otras cosas. El libro se llama Purgatorio de la autora Nathalia Tórtora.

Today I come to share with you the review of a rather peculiar book that I came across, but it made me very curious because it takes place in my country and you can appreciate a little of the culture of the tango dances we have, among other things. The book is called Purgatorio by the author Nathalia Tórtora.

La historia sigue a Anahí, una joven que es asesinada en un robo y va hacia el Purgatorio, este lugar gris y monótono que queda entre el cielo y el infierno. Este se rige por sus propias reglas, ella tendrá que acomodarse a ellas si quiere tener una oportunidad en el juicio final de poder elegir si quedarse allí, volver a reencarnar o vivir como fantasma en el mundo de los vivos. En medio de toda esta confusión en la que se torna su vida (o su muerte, mejor dicho) va a conocer a unas simpáticas hermanas que se encargan de un orfanato subterráneo creado por don Lució Ocampo. Él es un señor amargado y mala onda que está en el Purgatorio hace como 200 años, y es uno de los personajes más influyentes dentro de este limbo. Pero él oculta cosas y una de ellas es que quiere que Anahí elija irse de ahí porque le hace acordar a su esposa muerta y no quiere volver a sentir nada por otra persona. Así que mientras Anahí intenta adaptarse a su nueva realidad, Lucio tendrá que pelear contra sus propios fantasmas.

The story follows Anahi, a young woman who is killed in a robbery and goes to Purgatory, this gray and drab place that lies between heaven and hell. It is governed by its own rules, and she will have to adapt to them if she wants to have a chance at the final judgment to choose whether to stay there, be reincarnated or live as a ghost in the world of the living. In the midst of all this confusion in which her life (or rather her death) becomes, she will meet some nice sisters who are in charge of a subway orphanage created by Don Lucio Ocampo. He is a bitter and uncool man who has been in Purgatory for about 200 years, and is one of the most influential characters in this limbo. But he hides things and one of them is that he wants Anahi to choose to leave because it reminds him of his dead wife and he never wants to feel anything for anyone else again. So while Anahi tries to adapt to her new reality, Lucio will have to fight against his own ghosts.

Les hice la trama bastante extensa porque quería explicar bien de qué va la historia que contiene mucho más de lo que pude expresar ahí. Hay mucho que deje de lado para no spoilearlos, pero déjenme decirles que es una muy buena lectura. Me pareció una historia original, tuvo de todo, me hizo reír un montón y también emocionar. La verdad es que lo disfruté mucho.

I made the plot quite extensive because I wanted to explain well what the story is about and it contains much more than I could express there. There is a lot that I left out so as not to spoil it, but let me tell you that it is a very good read. I found it to be an original story, it had everything, it made me laugh a lot and it also made me emotional. The truth is that I enjoyed it a lot.

Los personajes se me hicieron muy queribles, aunque a veces me sacaron un poco de quicio. La historia me resultó super atrapante y a pesar de todo lo loco que puede resultar leer un libro con estas características, tuvo bastante sentido al final. Ese es otro punto que quiero destacar, no me resultó predecible para nada, en un momento me imaginaba para donde iba la mano, pero estaba equivocada, no sucedió nada de lo que pensaba.

The characters were very relatable to me, although they got on my nerves a bit at times. I found the story to be very engaging and despite how crazy it can be to read a book with these characteristics, it made a lot of sense in the end. That's another point I want to highlight, I didn't find it predictable at all, at one point I imagined where it was going, but I was wrong, nothing happened as I thought.

Lejos de inquietarme, me gustó que fuera el caso. Me gusta que los libros que leo me sorprendan, le da un plus de emoción y me cambia la percepción de lo que estoy leyendo para bien. Me encantó ver mucho del folclore y la cultura de mi país, esto de las milongas y los tangos, las cosas antiguas siguen funcionando para quienes estén dispuestos a prestarles atención.

Far from unsettling me, I liked that this was the case. I like to be surprised by the books I read, it gives me a plus of emotion and changes my perception of what I'm reading for the better. I loved seeing a lot of the folklore and culture of my country, the milongas and tangos, the old things still work for those who are willing to pay attention to them.

Y bueno, la historia fue bastante genial en su conjunto, hubo acción, aventura, emoción y una pizca de romance, no mucho pero efectivo. Yo soy una romántica, así que esperaba más de este, pero no me quejo porque todo estuvo tan bien planteado que siento que no hubiera podido terminar de otra manera. Por mí estuvo muy bien, y me gustó esto de imaginarme una vida más allá de la muerte. Quizá quedaron algunas cosas inconclusas, pero se entiende y no molesta. Así que bueno, es un libro que recomiendo.

And well, the story was pretty great as a whole, there was action, adventure, excitement and a dash of romance, not much but effective. I'm a romantic, so I expected more from this one, but I'm not complaining because everything was so well laid out that I feel like it couldn't have ended any other way. It was fine by me, and I liked this imagining a life after death. Maybe there were some things left unfinished, but it's understandable and it doesn't bother me. So, well, it's a book I recommend.
