Today I wanted to bring a review of one of those books that stay with us for a long time. It's about The Kite Runner, a novel by an Afghan writer, Khaled Hosseini. I confess I had never read an author from that country before. This is a book that, through a story of friendship and betrayal, gives us a glimpse into a world and conflict that for many seems distant, but which the author manages to bring closer in the most human way possible.

This story reaches us through the memories of Amir, a boy from a well-to-do family growing up in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan in the 1970s. His world is one of a privileged, yet also lonely, childhood, marked by the absence of his mother and a distant relationship with his father. His main companion is Hassan, the son of Ali, the family's servant. This other boy is his best friend and his most devoted admirer, although their friendship is marked by differences in their origin and social class.

Together they share days of games and adventures, one of their goals being an annual kite-fighting tournament, which they dream of winning to gain Amir his father's recognition. However, one day, after achieving their longed-for victory, something terrible happens—an act of brutal violence against Hassan that Amir witnesses but is unable to defend him from. This moment, combined with the first signs of the imminent political storm brewing over Afghanistan (the fall of the monarchy and the subsequent Soviet occupation), shatters his world, marking a before and after in their lives, and ultimately destroys their friendship.

It's worth highlighting that the writer has a marked ability to, in just a few pages, build a scene of innocence and warmth that he then completely demolishes. That turning point where the story loses its light and becomes dark and painful is one of the novel's strong points and best achievements. It doesn't focus on the military or political aspects of the war, but rather uses them as a backdrop that ultimately engulfs its characters. The true core is the human drama, the suffering of ordinary people, and above all, of children, who are the ones who suffer most from the conflicts of adults.

The characters feel deeply human. Amir, the protagonist, is not a hero; rather, he is a somewhat cowardly boy, driven by fear, jealousy, and a desperate need for his father's approval. It's hard to empathize with him, both as a child and as an adult. The other side of the coin is Hassan, easy to idealize as "the good one." He is noble, loyal, brave, and always willing to defend Amir. However, this same loyalty makes him a fragile, submissive character who often generates feelings of helplessness and anger due to his lack of rebellion. One point that caused me some perplexity while reading is that the role of women is practically non-existent. The female characters are secondary, and none have real weight in the development of the plot. In a story that spans decades and so many social changes, a female voice to provide its perspective is sorely missed.

I believe that beneath the conflicts and friendship, the novel is fundamentally about the idea of guilt and redemption. A phrase that could summarize its philosophy is that you cannot run away from the past. No matter how much Amir tries to bury what happened and start over in the United States, the ghosts of his childhood come back to haunt him. It brings a reflection on the weight of our actions and the need to redeem ourselves, to find peace within ourselves even if the path to get there is painful. The reading invites introspection.

It is a moving, and somewhat cruel, story. Beneath its nuances, and despite some weaknesses like the absence of female characters, it manages to speak to us about the human condition through an intimate story set within one of the most turbulent conflicts of contemporary history. It is a harsh and raw read in many of its realities.
