Casas Muertas [Book Review] ESP/ENG
After finishing reading this classic of Venezuelan literature written by the great Miguel Otero Silva, this is one of the books most read by high school students in literature, or at least before teachers asked students to read them to do their own analysis and reviews, this is the copy that I keep from my time as a student, that's why it's so worn, but despite its appearance that is not so neat, that does not prevent me from enjoying reading, so I recently picked it up to reread it and be able to share my opinion with you.
Ayer terminé de leer este clásico de la literatura venezolana escrito por el gran Miguel Otero Silva, este es uno de los libros que más leen los estudiantes de secundaria en literatura, o al menos antes los profesores le pedían a los alumnos que los leyeran para que hicieran sus propios análisis y reseñas, este es el ejemplar que yo conservo desde mi época de estudiante, por eso está tan desgastado, pero a pesar de su aspecto que no es tan prolijo, eso no me impide disfrutar de la lectura, así que recientemente lo tomé para releerlo y poder compartir con ustedes mi opinión.
The book is about a town in decline due to a lack of opportunities. This town is called Parapara de Ortiz and is located in the Venezuelan plains. Despite everything, the townspeople struggle to resist not only the ravages of time and the negligence of their rulers, but also diseases such as malaria, which threaten to decimate the population. Carmen Rosa is an optimistic girl who tries to resist this situation. She is a visionary and loves to study. However, when she sees that the town she loves is increasingly sinking into misery, that the walls of the houses are collapsing along with the dreams and hopes of the inhabitants, she has no choice but to accept reality and seek other, more encouraging and prosperous horizons.
El libro trata acerca de un pueblo en decadencia debido a la falta de oportunidades, este pueblo se llama Parapara de Ortiz y está en los llanos venezolanos, a pesar de todo la gente del pueblo lucha por resistir, no solo los embates del tiempo y la desidia de los gobernantes, sino también las enfermedades como el paludismo, que amenaza con diezmar la población. Carmen Rosa es una chica optimista que intenta resistir toda esta situación, es visionaria y ama estudiar, sin embargo al ver que el pueblo que ama cada vez se sume más en la miseria, que las paredes de las casas se derrumban junto con los sueños e ilusiones de los habitantes, no le queda más remedio que aceptar la realidad y buscar otros horizontes más alentadores y prósperos.
The novel has an interesting narrative, it begins with the ending, giving us an overview of where the events are heading, but as the work progresses we obtain more details that allow us to understand what triggered that outcome and where the work is really heading. The time in which it is set is the beginning of the 20th century, a difficult and controversial time for Venezuela since it was under the authoritarian and dictatorial regime of General Juan Vicente Gómez, a time of repression, especially against students, young people were the most exposed at that time, who had to hide their revolutionary ideas, look for others and all this gradually also influenced the decline of the people.
La novela tiene una narrativa interesante, inicia con el final, ofreciéndonos un panorama de hacia donde se encaminan los hechos, pero a medida que la obra avanza vamos obteniendo más datos que nos permiten comprender qué desencadeno ese desenlace y hacia donde se encamina la obra en realidad. El tiempo en el que está ambientada es a principios del siglo XX, momento difícil y polémico para Venezuela ya que estaba bajo el régimen autoritario y dictatorial del general Juan Vicente Gómez, una época de represión, en especial contra los estudiantes, los jóvenes eran los que estaban más expuestos en ese momentos, quienes debían ocultar sus ideas revolucionarias, buscar otros y todo esto paulatinamente también influyó en la decadencia del pueblo.
Another interesting feature is that the author, Miguel Otero Silva, gave this book light touches of Magical Realism, although it is not as present or as evident as it is in the works of García Márquez. The decay of the town, the crumbling walls of the houses, and the malaria are perhaps a metaphor for the nation's own decline and for the people's illusions of progress. However, the outlook becomes more encouraging as we approach the end. At that time, Venezuela was beginning to discover oil on its own lands, and this restored their stolen hopes, pointing to progress and happiness. Change is not easy, and Carmen Rosa knows this well, but she does not allow herself to be swayed by other people's opinions; she is willing to bravely take risks and move forward.
Otro rasgo interesante es que el autor, Miguel Otero Silva, le dio a este libro ligeras pinceladas de Realismo Mágico, aunque no está tan presente o no es tan evidente como sí lo es en las obras de García Márquez. La decadencia del pueblo, el derrumbe de las paredes de las casas y el paludismo es quizá una metáfora de la propia decadencia de la nación y de las ilusiones de progreso de la gente, sin embargo el panorama se vuelve más alentador conforme nos acercamos al final. En aquel entonces Venezuela comenzaba a descubrir el petróleo en sus propias tierras, y esto les devolvía las esperanzas robadas, apuntaba al progreso y a la felicidad, los cambios no son fáciles y Carmen Rosa lo sabe bien, pero ella no se deja llevar por opiniones ajenas, ella está dispuesta a asumir con valentía los riesgos y caminar hacia adelante.
There are many characters, each one different, with their own ideas and opinions. As in every town, some are prejudiced, others daring, others reserved, so it's easy to identify any person we meet in them, but Carmen Rosa stands out among them all, with her youth, freshness, and intelligence that contrasts with the town's dreary landscape. The novel's realistic tone also contrasts somewhat with those touches of Magical Realism I mentioned at the beginning, for example, the exaggerated tone with which the author describes the heat, the fever of malaria, and the story of a man who sees his own corpse before dying.
Hay muchos personajes y cada uno es diferente, con sus propias ideas y opiniones. Como en todo pueblo, algunos son prejuiciosos, otros arriesgados, otros reservados, así que es fácil de identificar a cualquier persona que conozcamos en ellos, pero entre todos destaca Carmen Rosa con su juventud, frescura e inteligencia que contrasta con el panorama gris del pueblo. El tono realista de la novela también contrasta de cierta manera con esas pinceladas de Realismo Mágico que les mencioné al inicio, por ejemplo el tono exagerado con el que el autor describe el calor, la fiebre del paludismo y el relato de un hombre que ve su propio cadáver antes de morir.

Esto en verdad es un clásico, recuerdo que me impresionó gratamente la parte donde el autor narra como ataca el mosquito y como se desarrolla para propagar la enfermedad.

This is my first time hearing about this book and it’s very intriguing, but I have to ask: when you said the book begins with the ending, is it some sort of foreshadowing? And if it is, welp, you just spoilt some peak twist for us(me)🫠
No, it's not foreshadowing, but it does start off with something shocking, but the whole book has an interesting plot that leads up to that shocking ending.

I haven't read anything by Miguel Otero Silva, but from what you describe, I get the impression it's one of those stories that, even if it's a little sad, leaves a lasting impression on you. The combination of reality and magical realism is something that really catches my attention in books. Maybe I'll look it up; I'm already curious to know how it all ends.
Yes, you will surely like it a lot, it is one of those books that keeps you on tenterhooks, I found it very interesting.
