The Boy in the Striped Pajamas REVIEW (ESP/ENG)
Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you had a blessed and beautiful few days with your loved ones. It's precisely during this time of year that we tend to reflect, and January ends up being a month for starting afresh with new resolutions. One of mine was to finish reading this book. I had seen the movie before, but the book is truly far superior in every way, so I invite you to read my opinion about this historical drama by John Boyne.
¡Feliz año para todos! Espero que hayan tenido unos días bendecidos y muy bonito en compañía de sus seres queridos. Precisamente en esta época que acaba de pasar nos volvemos muy reflexivos, y enero termina siendo un mes para recomenzar con nuevos propósitos, y uno de ellos para mi fue terminar de leer este libro, anteriormente yo había visto la película pero de verdad que el libro está muchísimo mejor en todos los sentidos, así que los invito a conocer mi opinión acerca de este libro de drama histórico de John Boyne.
This book tells the story of the friendship between Bruno (the son of a Nazi commandant) and Shmuel, a young prisoner. Although they are both in the same place, Auschwitz, one of the worst concentration camps of the Nazi regime, their circumstances are obviously not the same. However, this does not diminish their friendship. Every day they meet and talk through a barbed-wire fence. Bruno confides in his new friend about his discontent after the move, since he and his family used to live in a different city and country (Germany). Shmuel also vents about his hard work and all the hardships he endures as a prisoner, including hunger. But Bruno (without any idea of what Nazism is, what it means to be Jewish in that context, and even less that his father was the one in charge of the camp) always brings him food and talks to him in the best of ways.
Este libro nos cuenta la historia de la amistad entre Bruno (el hijo de un comandante nazi) y Shmuel, un niño prisionero, y aunque ambos se encuentran en el mismo lugar, Auschwitz, uno de los peores campos de concentración del imperio nazi, no están en las mismas condiciones obviamente, sin embargo esto no empaña la amistad entre ellos, todos los días se encuentran y conversan a través de una cerca de alambre de púas. Bruno le confiesa a su nuevo amigo su inconformidad tras la mudanza, ya que antes él y su familia vivían en otra ciudad y en otro pais (Alemania) mientras que Shmuel también se desahoga respecto a su trabajo duro y todas las vicisitudes que vive como prisionero, incluyendo el hambre, pero Bruno (sin tener idea de que es el nazismo, que significa ser judío en ese contexto y mucho menos de que su padre era quién comandaba ese lugar) siempre le lleva comida y conversa con él en el mejor de los términos.
Despite being a book about the Holocaust and Nazism, this book overflows with tenderness thanks to its protagonists. The author handled the characters so well that a very organic friendship between them feels real. At that age, prejudices don't exist; children are innocent and don't know borders. That barbed wire fence that separated them was merely symbolic of everything that truly lay between them (an absurd and supremacist ideology). But on the other side of the fence, neither Bruno nor Shmuel saw ideologies or races; they only saw a child, just like themselves, a child among so many adults, someone to play and talk to, someone to spend time with, a friend.
Por más que sea un libro sobre el holocausto y el nazismo, este libro derrocha ternura debido a sus protagonistas, el autor manejó muy bien a los personajes de modo que se siente una amistad muy orgánica entre ambos, y es que a esa edad no existen los prejuicios, los niños son inocentes y no conocen las fronteras, esa barrera de espinas que los separaba era un mero simbolismo de todo lo que realmente estaba entre ellos (toda una ideología absurda y supremacista) pero al otro lado de la alambrada tanto Bruno como Shmuel no veían ideologías o razas, solo veían a un niño, tal como él, un niño en medio de tantos adultos, alguien con quién jugar y conversar, alguien para pasar el rato, un amigo
Furthermore, since the book is narrated from the point of view of one of the children, Bruno, it offers us a very innocent panorama, a real but very softened point of view of what happens there (adult readers know what happens, we even realize what happens between Bruno's mom and one of his dad's subordinate officers 😏) but there are never explicit scenes of violence or that a child could understand at first glance.
Además, el libro, al estar narrado desde el punto de vista de uno de los niños, de Bruno, nos ofrece un panorama muy inocente, un punto de vista real pero muy suavizado de lo que ocurre allí (los lectores adultos saben lo que pasa, incluso nos damos cuenta de lo que ocurre entre la mamá de Bruno y uno de los oficiales subordinados de su papá 😏) pero nunca se narran escenas explícitas de violencia o que un niño pueda entender a simple vista.
The novel is full of contrasts: innocence and evil, abundance and scarcity, but Bruno and Shmuel are proof that friendship knows no borders and is not subject to any code or prejudice; the children are authentic and give their hearts without regard for places of origin, social status, or lineage, so this is a story about friendship and connection.
La novela está llena de contrastes: Inocencia y maldad, abundancia y escases, pero Bruno y Shmuel son la prueba de que la amistad no conoce fronteras ni se somete a ningún código o prejuicio, los niños son auténticos y entregan su corazón sin fijarse en lugares de procedencia, estatus sociales o linajes, así que esta es una historia sobre amistad y conexión.
The language Boyne (the author) uses in his narrative is very simple but fascinating; it truly makes you feel as if the story is being told by a small child without context of what is really happening, but offering enough information for an adult to understand it perfectly. Thus, through Bruno, the cruelty of Nazism is exposed, but at the same time, ironically, he serves as a key element in teaching his father a lesson, and obviously I'm not going to reveal why (you'll find that out if you read the book or, well, if you see the movie).
El lenguaje que utiliza Boyne (el autor) en su narrativa es muy sencillo pero fascinante, de verdad te hace sentir que la historia la está contando un niño pequeño sin contexto de lo que realmente pasa, pero ofreciendo la información suficiente y necesaria para que un adulto lo comprenda perfectamente, así que de esta manera a través de Bruno se expone la crueldad del Nacismo pero al mismo tiempo, irónicamente él sirve como un elemento clave para aleccionar a su padre y, obviamente no les voy a revelar porqué (eso lo sabrán si leen el libro o, bueno, si ven la película)

Happy New Year! What an intense way to start the year's reading. Wow, this book... I remember reading it perfectly; it's one of those stories that stays with you and never leaves.
You're absolutely right that the narration from Bruno's perspective is what makes it so powerful and painful at the same time. That innocence with which he describes terrible situations breaks your heart because, as you rightly say, as an adult reader, you gradually understand all the horror and tension behind it (including the part about the mother, which is a very powerful detail) while he only sees a friend. I loved reading your review!
