Inchcolm Abbey smash in Inchcolm island Scotland

Hello Hello Hivians

Beautiful sunshine and blue skies make for some gorgeous pictures. For today's post we have travelled by boat to Incholm Island in the Firth of Forth in Scotland.

Today's set of pictures are from our visit on the 10th June 2025 to Inchcolm Abbey on the island of Incholm.

Incholm Abbey

Whilst a travel post of Incholm Abbey is in the works let me just say that Inchcolm Abbey was founded as a priory in 1140 by King David I and became a full abbey in 1235.

The refectory

A refectory is basically a dining room. This is the refectory in the Abbey and where all the monks ate their meals.

image.png

The refectory pulpit

Whilst the monks were eating they would be preached to from someone in this pulpit.
Who needs a radio as live entertainment when you have probably the Prior preaching while you eat!

The sing below the window

But we go down to the bottom end of the refectory where the table was.

The big reveal ... little by little

Shadows on the stone

A scene from a painting

I do love this picture, but for me it is not focused enough on the shadows, we really get drawn to the view out of the window,...
image.png

Now this is more shadow focused!

image.png

See how thick those walls are.

image.png

The window almost at full length!

image.png

I call these the shadow steps.

I love the grid like pattern to it.

But now, decisions, decisions, decisions!

Yes it's that time for me to choose my entry picture!

So here 👇👇👇 is my entry for Show Me A Shadow - Round 378

image.png

That was another tough choice.

I have gone for the last photo because it is focused on the shadows.

It might not be my favourite picture as I think that honour goes to the one I said looked like a painting but for the purposes of this SMASh shadows competition I am entering this one!

I never know which picture to choose as the entry, and I do try to make a story with my posts rather than just a post and a run kind of thing!!

What do you think? Did I pick the suitable one, or would you have chosen another one?

image.png

This is my contribution to Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round 378 from the marvellously magical @melinda010100 and the simply superb Shadow Hunters community.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

I also liked the one that looked like the scene of a painting: the window, the landscape in the window, the color of the walls, the corner of the table, the shadow on the floor, even the green mold on the stones. But if you say that the photo you chose is better for the contest, then I trust you completely. A hug the size of that dining room, Ed.

hehe ah yes we were drawn to the same picture Nancy. Yes I liked it and I love seeing sea and scenery through windows. At least that is my personal view, and that was a big dining room so a big hug! A bigger refectory hug to you Nancy :)

This is like something out of a movie! So cool. It's crazy to think how active it must have been when it was first built. How different life was back then.

Yeah I love castles houses and abbeys like this. This was well fun seeing it was on a little island. Do you know they were a hardy bunch these monks, there was only one room that was allowed a fireplace!

With those thick walls it's no wonder this has been standing since the 12th century! I always try to imagine what life was like back then, fascinating.
Love your shadows Ed!

That's how they built things back in the day. Do you know there was only one fireplace allowed to be used in the whole abbey apart from the kitchen. They were a hardy bunch. When I lived in the Orkney islands way up north, the walls were over a thick foot stone. It was a 400 year building.
Have a great weekend Lizzie :)
