Colonial Architecture in the City of Cumaná

Keep your heart above all that is stored up, for out of it springs life.
Proverbs 4
The city of Cumaná has a great history as the first city founded by the Spaniards in the American Continent. In spite of being founded more than five hundred years ago, it preserves important elements that are testimonies of the Spanish dominion in the city.
The Santa Inés church is one of the most important patrimonies of the city and, very close to it are located the most important streets where we can appreciate the colonial and historical past of the city.
The city was built according to the model established by the Spanish empire, that is, the colonial model where political power, religious power and society coexisted harmoniously.
The Santa Inés church is a landmark as well as the surrounding streets. Between it we have Sucre street, Ermita street and Bolivar street. Here you can see several constructions of the colonial model. Houses with high windows, others with long windows, very long doors, in addition, the roofs generally in the form of cone and, something very curious that the walls, that is to say, that the houses were glued one to the other.
These houses usually had large corridors and large spaces where the different social activities of the house took place. It had a living room, then when entering the house there was a family room where only people close to the family passed through or were received.
In this case, each family had a coat of arms that identified it as such. The coat of arms was the symbol that identified each of the families that lived in this area.
It is believed that this area was inhabited by the wealthy class since having a weapon shield required some expense. This area is very crowded during the celebrations of the anniversaries of the city of Cumaná. In the month of November the anniversary of the foundation of the first-born of the American continent is celebrated.
A striking element of these streets is the colorful houses, they are really very colorful, which gives a great style and allows you to appreciate every detail of the houses.
Looking closely at every detail of the houses allows us to know the different designs that were built in these houses. Most of them are made in high relief, the roofs are generally made of wood and some of them have decorative tiles.
Until a future tour of more of my beautiful city, the First Born of the American Continent

The truth is that the colonial zone is very beautiful, and full of those colorful houses, it caught my attention that the streets were all empty and there were no people.
Greetings @manclar thank you for your visit, it is a street with very colorful houses full of designs typical of the colonial era; the streets were alone because I took the pictures very early in the morning.
These beautiful and quiet streets that I have not walked for years. Thank you for showing these photos. The colonial architecture is a typology that left us memories of very picturesque streets.
Hello dear, I like these streets for their colorful houses and attractive designs, they are a sample of the colonial past of the city that is still preserved in much of the municipality.
