Bolivar Square of Barinas and surroundings

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel to the city of Barinas which is more than 400 kilometers from the city where I live, I was only there for 3 days so I had no opportunity to photograph its architectural beauty, but I could get close to the Plaza Bolivar de Barinas. It had been years since I had been to this city, in fact, everything looked totally unknown to me since when I have been there it has been in short periods of time. Barinas is a small city in the Venezuelan plains and it is not really that it has many striking structures, I could realize that while walking through the center, the truth is that there was not much I could photograph beyond this square and although the soccer stadium was also an option, it was closed.

And well, like most of the Bolivar squares in the country, the central element is the monument to Simon Bolivar, a hero of the Venezuelan homeland that makes us feel proud. As you can see in the photos, Bolivar lies on his horse which is raised on two legs, the statue is on a black ceramic rectangular pedestal. I was struck by the height of the pedestal, but I think it gives more majesty and attractiveness to the sculpture of Bolivar.

Next, you will see the common areas of the plaza, I will start by mentioning the large number of trees that are distributed throughout the plaza space, they provide a lot of shade and fresh air which is important since Barinas is a very hot city. The green areas could be in better condition, but I guess the heat dries out the soil and does not allow healthy green grass to grow. I really liked the terracotta pottery that covers all the walkways, its red color creates a nice contrast and makes walking there relaxing. There are also several benches where passersby can rest.

One of the most striking structures in the surrounding area is the cathedral church of Our Lady of Pilar de Zaragosa in the city of Barinas, located on Briceño Mendez Avenue next to the episcopal palace of Barinas. The structure clearly has a colonial air (like most cathedrals in the country) and stands as the tallest structure in the square. This church has a large clock tower with several bells which ring according to the programmed hours, these rang while I was there, so I could confirm that they work perfectly. There is a large wooden door as one of the few entrances to the structure, the truth in general looks pretty good.

You can also see other interesting structures on the sides of the square, among these are the house of culture, the governor of Barinas state and the palace of Marquéz del Pumar, except for the governor, all have colonial architecture, I should mention that Venezuela is a country that was colonized by the Spanish and in that sense the historical sites usually have the architecture that was used in colonial times. There are also some colorful streets and walls with painted figures.
