The Privacy vs Security Trap

Sure it is not ideal to be forced to think for everybody all the time. Though since most users are not using their brain much anymore, or lets say the less and less, i do not want to be in your position at all.
When i started working with computers in 1999, and with the rebellious and privacy loving character i already was, i knew that i needed to find a way. So, to be sure i'll 'never' exist in the matrix, i found a special way and have therefor a few different email accounts to be present online. The one to test out, the one to give to the ones in need and so on... up to the encrypted privat mail.
I didn't, i don't and never will trust anything based on zeros and ones. While working as a webmaster at the time, i even tried to give this importance to everyone i was working for/with. For sure i do hope that people would use the net in the 'same' way. It would help definitely many, even dev's i guess...

By instinct, I tend to fall on the "Privacy" side of the fence. Possibly as a reaction against big tech's endless drive for control disguised as security.

I think the real question is whether it is possible to provide an adequate level of security (accepting it'll never be perfect) without requiring people to dox themselves. What I wonder is whether it can be delivered through coding and processes.

So for example, if we're talking 3Speak, you could get together a group of trusted people of each of the groups involved, from coders, to admins, to content creators, to viewers both within Hive and external to it. Get them to try to think up the shadiest shit they could do in their role, then work out how to defend against it without compromising privacy.

For example, it might be something as simple as blocking the use of links (or non-Hive links) in comments. Or it might be the need to have a set of policies relating to adult or really dodgy content, with a reporting mechanism. A select group of Hivers (possibly using anonymous accounts to protect them from interference) would act as admins and review reported (and potentially hidden) content in some kind of dashboard (NOT Discord, lol). They could vote on whether they believe it breaks the rules, and get a small reward for each vote funded by a delegation account or a small % payout from the rewards pool.

The key thing is that hopefully this could all be done in a way which enables Hivers at all levels to maintain as much anonymity as they want, with a relatively light touch. But I'm sure more advanced users than me can cook up security risk shenanigans I could only dream of !

Security is hard to get right as we can see from all the systems getting hacked. I've seen a few people wondering if systems created by 'AI' will be vulnerable and that could to other AI systems that look for ways in. Perhaps they could also suggest improvements. Good luck.

I don't quite understand the post, but I suppose it's about protecting both users and Hive from scams?

To me, security and privacy are the real backbones for the ever lasting of these projects and extensively for the enjoyment and confidence for all the users.

There are no benefits or encouragement on your side and on us the users if scammers come up to steal the hard earnings and labour of innocent people here

I have read in this space about two Hivers complaining that their systems were hacked and all the Dollars left with unknown people and to an unknown destinations. It breaks the heart to have such negative experiences, no body deserves such.!

Nobody would enjoy any porous system, let all your efforts building these things not be in vain.

What security need are we talking about that requires compromising privacy? Have you exhausted the strategy of nagging the user enough that they can't help but be aware of it?

As for self-doxxing service providers, can a web of trust suffice instead? I may not know and trust you, but I might know and trust someone who trusts you. These attestations can be held on the chain.

I think there might be differing opinions; some will accept it, and I think others won't... maybe they want to keep their identity private. Personally, I'd love to know who's who; in fact, many already do.

The "happy path" moment is worth it.
