Six Decades of Grace: Celebrating Mama’s 60th Birthday

I shall always hold January 2, 2026, close to my heart. It wasn't just another day; it was the first celebration of the year 2026 for our family. It was for my Mama, who turned 60 that day and changed our lives.

We had been thinking about this for a while. We spoke about throwing Mama a nice birthday party for years, but it always seemed like there were more important things to do, like pay bills, take care of duties, and live life. Mama never said anything.

She was always the kind of person who would say, "It's okay, it's simple." She always opted to give instead of getting.

So when her 60th birthday was coming around, we promised her that this time it was for Mama.

This occasion was even more meaningful because it was her first birthday party. Just thinking about turning 60 and having a birthday party for the first time made my heart ache. It was all worth it to see her finally get to do something she had never done before.

We really didn't think the celebration would look so nice. We assumed it would be easy and maybe a little crazy because we had to get ready for so long. It's not easy to plan a birthday party because there are so many things to think about, such where to have it, what to do, and what to eat.

We decided to make the invites ourselves to save money. We made them with affection and sent them both in person and online. It was nice to see our designs being shared with family, friends, and church members. It made me remember that you don't need a lot of money to make something important; you only need time, effort, and love.

The Blessed Bills of Abundance were one of the most moving sections of the presentation. We asked Mama's close family, church members, and friends to pray for her and send her blessings. It was incredibly sad to hear them say things like "I love you," "thank you," and "I hope for your life." I saw that Mama's eyes were shining, and I knew she felt very loved.

We also made roses for the dance. It was so nice to see them dance for Mama. At the same moment, she appeared shy, astonished, and very thrilled. For a moment, she looked like a young lady again, having fun at a party she never dreamed she would have. That picture will always be in my heart.

There were, of course, gifts, such delectable cakes, cupcakes, and special treats for the nieces and nephews. The kids were happy, and the grownups were busy telling stories and laughing. It was like a pleasant family reunion, with hugs, memories, and happiness exchanged.

And then there was the food, since no Filipino party is complete without a big meal.

We bought a live pig that weighed 90 kilograms, which is enough to serve about 100 people. We made a variety of recipes with it that everyone enjoyed:

Pork Adobo and Igado are two classic dishes that are always present at a Filipino handaan.

Fried chicken, especially for the youngsters

Pork Humba is sweet and delicious. It is made by frying the pork first and then adding the sauce. It is pure pork that is rich and tasty.

It was extremely satisfying to see everyone appreciate the food. People were smiling, laughing, and going back for more food. It made all the work seem worth it.

But in the middle of all the happiness, my heart was calm. We thought of Papa. Even though he's gone, we could feel him that day. I kept thinking how delighted he would have been to see Mama smile and be with relatives and friends.

There were times when I wished dad was still living, sitting next to Mama, laughing, snapping pictures, and celebrating with us. We really miss him. I still feel the grief of losing dad, but that day I felt like he was there with us, celebrating in spirit.

There was more to this birthday than just a celebration. It was proof of how good God is. Mama used to ask for a small party for her 60th birthday. She didn't want anything big, just a modest handaan with her family. But God provided her more than she had hoped for.

The Lord really does things that we can't even imagine. What began as a simple plan developed into a stunning, amazing party. It made me remember that when we give anything to God, He can make it amazing.

We loved, had faith, were thankful, and made memories on Mama's 60th birthday that will last a lifetime. I know she will always remember this, and so will we.

My heart was full as we started the year 2026 with this celebration. It was a reminder that life is fleeting and we should enjoy the time we have with the people we love.

Mama, happy 60th birthday! Thank you for your love, strength, and sacrifices. You should be happy all the time. 💕
