University Hill, a reunion with my youth [en/es]

Yesterday I accompanied my uncle to a doctor's appointment at Calixto García Hospital, located next to University Hill. While the doctors performed his routine tests, he decided to walk around this significant and vitally important place for our country. I can't help but stop, observe, and remember.

Ayer acompañé a mi tío a una cita médica en el Hospital Calixto García, ubicado junto a la Colina Universitaria. Mientras los médicos le realizaban sus exámenes de rutina, decidí caminar por los alrededores de este lugar tan significativo y de vital importancia para nuestro país. No pude evitar detenerme, observar, recordar.
Walking through University Hill is like stepping into a space that is not only part of Havana's landscape, but also of my personal history. I approached its steps as if returning to an ancient temple, and as I did, I felt that each step transported me back to the years when, as a young economics student, I would climb them with books in my backpack and a heart full of questions.
The University of Havana, founded in the 18th century, is much more than an academic institution: it is a symbol of resistance, critical thinking, and transformation. Its campus on the Hill, inaugurated in 1902, is an architectural gem in the Neoclassical style that stands proudly over the city. From the street, the robust columns of the central building exude solemnity.
Caminar por la Colina Universitaria es recorrer un espacio que no solo forma parte del paisaje habanero, sino también de mi historia personal. Me acerqué a sus escalinatas como quien regresa a un templo antiguo, y al hacerlo, sentí que cada peldaño me devolvía a los años en que, siendo una joven estudiante de economía, subía con libros en la mochila y el corazón lleno de preguntas.
La Universidad de La Habana, fundada en el siglo XVIII, es mucho más que una institución académica: es un símbolo de resistencia, pensamiento crítico y transformación. Su sede en la Colina, inaugurada en 1902, es una joya arquitectónica de estilo neoclásico que se impone con dignidad sobre la ciudad. Desde la calle, las columnas robustas del edificio central anuncian solemnidad.
At the top of the steps, the statue of Alma Mater extends its arms as if embracing the future. With a serene face and unwavering gaze, this bronze figure embodies the wisdom that welcomes, protects, and guides. It is an academic symbol that embraces students like a spiritual mother, a guardian of knowledge at every step toward understanding. In the context of such a magnificent institution, its presence evokes the feeling that all greatness begins with the desire to learn, and then to share and transform.
En lo alto de la escalinata , la estatua del Alma Mater extiende sus brazos como quien abraza el porvenir. Con rostro sereno y mirada firme, esta figura de bronce encarna la sabiduría que acoge, protege y guía. Es un símbolo académico que acoge a los estudiantes como una madre espiritual , custodia del saber en cada paso hacia el conocimiento. En el contexto de tan magno centro, su presencia hace sentir que toda grandeza comienza al querer aprender, para después compartir y transformar.
This monumental complex has witnessed crucial moments in Cuban history. Generations of students who would later become scientists, artists, economists, doctors, and social leaders have passed through its halls. Here, ideas have been conceived, utopias debated, and dreams of a more just country envisioned. La Colina doesn't just train professionals; it trains citizens.
But beyond its historical significance, there is a serene beauty in its spaces. The vegetation blends seamlessly with its stone walls, the staircases connect the different faculties, and the corridors echo with the sound of young footsteps.
Este conjunto monumental ha sido testigo de momentos cruciales en la historia de Cuba. Por sus aulas han pasado generaciones de estudiantes que luego serían científicos, artistas, economistas, médicos, líderes sociales. Aquí se han gestado ideas, se han debatido utopías, se ha soñado con un país más justo. La Colina no solo forma profesionales: forma ciudadanos.
Pero más allá de su peso histórico, hay una belleza serena en sus espacios. La vegetación que se funde con sus paredes de piedras , las escalinatas que entrelazan las distintas facultades, los corredores donde resuena el eco de pasos jóvenes.
In the back, next to the Faculty of Physics, a sculpture of Albert Einstein seems to meditate silently, reminding us that science is also poetry, and that wonder is the first step toward knowledge.
At the end of the consultation, my uncle wanted me to take a picture of him very close to this illustrious scientist; he is an electronics engineer and has had to apply many physical concepts throughout his working life.
En la parte trasera, junto a la Facultad de Física, una escultura de Albert Einstein parece meditar en silencio, recordándonos que la ciencia también es poesía, y que el asombro es el primer paso del conocimiento.
Al finalizar la consulta mi tío quiso que le tomara una foto muy cerca de este ilustre cientifico, él es electrónico y ha tenido que aplicar muchos conceptos físicos a lo largo de su vida laboral
Walking through this hill and appreciating its surroundings is an act of gratitude. It's acknowledging that this place gave me tools, friendships, questions, and certainties. It's also an invitation to see with different eyes: to those who walk through it for the first time, to those who remember it with nostalgia, to those who discover it through these images. University Hill is living memory, it is the future. And it remains there, steadfast, like a beacon of knowledge in the heart of Havana.
Recorrer esta Colina y apreciar todo su entorno es un acto de gratitud. Es reconocer que este lugar me dio herramientas, amistades, preguntas y certezas. Es también una invitación a mirar con otros ojos: a quienes la transitan por primera vez, a quienes la recuerdan con nostalgia, a quienes la descubren a través de estas imágenes.
La Colina Universitaria es memoria viva, es porvenir. Y sigue ahí, firme, como un faro de saber en el corazón de La Habana.
