One Minute, Because Someone Up There Loves Me

The whole thing happened yesterday morning. I'm still shocked to be honest, trying to process what happened and also trying to imagine what could have happened if someone up there would not love me.

We're preparing to celebrate Easter and in some of the European countries, there's a tradition (dying I must admit), according to which boys and men are visiting and watering ladies on the second day of Easter. In small communities, mostly in villages, this is still a thing, men are visiting female relatives and friends and spray perfume on their head, so that they don't wither and wish them happy Easter.

This is the modern version of the tradition, as a couple of centuries back men took the ladies out to the well and poured a bucket of water on them, literally. Many had died like this over the years as in April it's still cold and pneumonia and meningitis used to be not treatable back in those days. I'm glad I did not live back then, because as nice this tradition seems these days, it's still tiring to cook, bake for 2 days and have guests all day, one after the other, not to mention the smell on your head and your clothes.

As I said, this tradition is on its way of dying, but it was brought back to me, in a very different way.

Yesterday morning I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, after which I went to the study, which is 3m away fromthebathroom. Then I heard a very sharp and unknown noise, so I went out of the study immediately to see where that noise comes from and ended up in the bathroom. As I entered, saw water coming out from under the sink, like a fountain you see in parks.

I don't know if you've been in a similar situation, but even if you haven't, you can imagine me standing there for a second, covered by water, trying to figure out what to do. Lucky me, I know my flat inside out and knew where the tap that turns the water off was, so I could act quickly. Again, lucky me as only half of the bathroom was flooded and the amount of water spilled was nothing, compared to what could have happened.

After turning the water off, I tried to get myself together and see where the water was coming from and even if I could not see exactly, had a clue about what the problem was. Being Good Friday, you can imagine the headache I had when I tried to find a solution to my problem. Lucky me again, I called my plumber and in 2 hours, the problem was solved.

They say a picture worth a thousand words. I suppose the photo above says it all, no need for an explanation. I haven't noticed the damage till the pipe burst, because this flexible pipe is under the sink, in a place you can't see, unless you dismantle the tap.

After the problem got solved, I could not turn my brain off and was thinking how lucky I am. Obviously first I was scared, or frightened, whatever word you prefer, then angry and frustrated, but after the pipe was fixed, I started to think back.

There's someone I know has been in a similar situation. The guy was not home and 6 square meter of water flooded 6 levels in his flat. He was lucky as insurance covered it, but imagine the damage and frustration everyone in the building had to go through.

I had different plans for yesterday, I wanted to go out, to run some errands, but didn't after all. I changed my mind and looking back now, it was the right decision. Imagine not being home, when the pipe burst. Would have flooded everyone in the building and that means 3 levels. Believe it or not, the amount of water I lost due to this was less than a bucket of 10L.

Thinking back, it's incredible how lucky I am and yesterday, all day, I had one word in my head and that was "lucky". I don't believe in many things, like faith or horoscope or other hocus pocus, but something clearly happened yesterday and I'm really glad things turned out as they did.

Literally there was one minute between the pipe burst and me discovering it. One minute.

When I was a young girl and I lived in a small village, it use (in the day after Easter that we call "Pasquetta") the young boys go around to water the young girl. The same happened the August 15th, that was good because the very hot weather. :P

After those time (a lot of years ago) I just watered inside my home, as the same way happened to you yesterday. 😁

Wow, I didn't know you had a similar tradition in Italy. Good to know :)

I'm glad you didn’t have to go through the worst scenario. Some days, it feels like luck’s just not on our side, but then other times, it shows up when we least expect it. 😄

What good fortune 😅 Happy Easter 🌷

Interesting old tradition. Sad that so many traditions seem one generation away from being forgotten.

Happy Easter to you too 🐇

Yes, a lot of traditions are on the way of disappearance, unfortunately. Some good, some less good, but life is changing.

I like modernity ;)

Well... it was a minute that saved lives. Because you would have sprayed the heads of all the people below... respecting the tradition of yesteryear.

And honestly... let me ask you something first, about the perfume... isn't it just one perfume they spray on you? Is it several? If so...

Ahh no! I refuse hahahaha

It is like when you go to the perfumery to buy perfume. You start trying out the testers and after the 4th or 5th, you feel like vomiting already.

But for guys it's even worse. Imagine wherever they go, they are offered drinks, cake and cookies. People have the habit of forcing food and drinks on their guests, and if you refuse, they get offended. This is the worst thing one can do. Some people get drunk at Easter.

One year I got a severe headache. I could not move my head as the whole room was spinning and felt like vomiting. I've never been so sick in my life.

So as I said, it seems like a nice tradition, but it can be a torture for both parties.

Yes, odious tradition... I advise you to arm yourself with a good hose and throw water on anyone who comes near you. 🤣

No worries as no one is visiting these days :) We call a few relatives, friends, wish them Happy Easter and that is all.

You surely did have someone looking out for you! One minute that saved you from further disaster. It's also a really good thing that you are on good terms with your plumber! I'm glad it worked out in the best way possible! Happy Easter to you :)

Yes, the plumber was also a huge luck. This guy is an old friend and a really decent guy, so he came immediately as he knew I'm in trouble.

Happy Easter to you too dear Tamara 🐇

Én is ezt mondogattam, miután a baj elhárult. Tiszta szerencse, hogy nem locsóltam meg az egész épületet 😂

OMG I can relate to this, Wednesday morning when I came downstairs there was water dripping through the ceiling and the carpet was wet on the bottom stairs. back upstairs to discover that all the bedding and towels in the water tank cupboard were seriously sodden (thankfully other wise all that escaped water may have brought the ceiling crashing to the floor downstairs). Stop cock closed, plumber called, who arrived 30 mins later. Discovered a small hole had formed by the header expansion tank, he went to the plumbers merchant got a new tank fitted it. All is now good again PHEW!!!!

Now I just await his invoice. Ho hum

Happy spring holiday to you

Holy shit! Looks like I'm nit the only lucky one, although your adventure is costing you money. My plumber didn't want any money, and imagine he came back yesterday as one pipe was wet still, so he needs to replace a piece of pipe after the holidays.

I guess luck does exist and sone of us get lucky from time to time. I'm glad no major damage was done.

Happy holidays to you too. Let me know about the bill though 😬

The issue of turning off the water is really interesting sir. Which is above all environmentally friendly and helps in saving water. However, you understood at the right time. The water has been able to be turned off. Thank you sir

You know. I do believe that all things happen for a reason. Just like in your situation, several years ago, my husband and I were about to leave the house to attend a sporting event 30 minutes away. As we were leaving, I went to the bedroom mirror for a final touch up. Suddenly, I smelled something burning, like electrical wires. That peculiar smell.

I was adamant that we cancel our sporting event and call Emergency. Turns out we had an electrical shortage in our en suite bathroom. Upon inspection, the fire dept. inspectors located the burning wires in the attic in the garage.

Can you imagine what would have happened had I not gone back to our bedroom? I thank God every day for the one minute hesitation. To this day, I can remember why I thought another look at my outfit would make a difference. Come to find out, it did make a difference in whether we had a home to return to.

Thanks for sharing this. Take care.
