Caribbean Silver from the Tropical Island of Barbados

It's kind of an odd week around here in southern California. For some reason it's going to be unseasonably warm for the next few days and the weather service issued a heat advisory. For almost being November, that's a new on for me, but the high in a couple days is expected to be 87 F (30 C.) I don't mind that kind of weather, a last dose of summer before it cools off for winter!

At any rate, today I decided to share another vintage coin from the Caribbean. Although Barbados is technically not in the Caribbean, it's an Atlantic island, it's close enough to be grouped in as part of the islands. In retrospect placing this coin on a black background was a mistake, but oh well. Live and learn!

About the coin:

From numista.com

This is another coin from the Caribbean that I've collected over the years. I'm not entirely sure when I picked it up, but it's been in the collection for a long time. Like many of the silver coins available from the era from small island nations it was produced by the Franklin Mint, in Wawa, Pennsylvania. A suburb of Philadelphia for those familiar with the area. They produced beautiful coins for many years for nations around the world, usually in sterling silver. This one is an odd duck in that it's only 80% silver, which is likely due to the high silver prices at the time. But it's still a nice silver work of art.

They were 97,000 minted that year and the silver melt value is worth around $37.83 as of the time or writing. However, the coin would likely sell for around $50 to a collector. Over the years fewer and fewer of these were minted until 1983 when only 130 were produced. Those coins are much harder to find and are more expensive if you can get a hold of one!

National Heroes Square

This is a public square in Bridgetown which is the capital city of the island nation. It was named Trafalgar Square but was renamed as the nation became independent from Great Britain. I personally never visited the area on my visit to the island, mainly focusing on beaches and diving. But it looks like I missed out on some great history when I was there!

This fountain commemorates piped water arriving to Bridgetown and was built in 1865. As hard as it is to believe that something we all take for granted in most of the world today was a luxury at one time. The fountain is a national landmark and thus it's appearance on today's coin!

I know this time of year it may be starting to cool off in many northern countries and states. It's times like these that pictures like these make you want to plan that getaway to the islands. Just imagine that warm white sand would feel between your toes and the warm water just beckoning you for a swim. I love the Caribbean!

The place is as impressive as the coin and what we can see drawn on it. Last week I saw your post about the Mexican coin, but I was about to board a plane and couldn't comment. So, I'm here to say hello and remind you that I appreciate you very much. What you're saying about the heat in November is quite unusual. I hope it doesn't cause any major inconvenience in your area 🙏

Thank you so much! I hope you had a great trip, I know you travel a fair amount. I used to travel much more in my younger years, but it's not as much fun once you hit fifty! lol

It will be nice for the next few days, just like summer all over again. I'm OK with that, I love summer!

Hopefully that heat stays down your way! It's cold here, but I am not minding it too much. Though it would be nicer if they had the heat working in my office. It was 56 degrees in there this morning when I got to work. I'm sitting watching what this dang hurricane is going to do right now.

Hit Cuba and head out to sea... Hurricanes aren't tall that common this late in the year, but I remember a couple in Puerto Rico in late October and even early November. Not unheard of by any means. It 's just too bad it's hitting Cuba, their infrastructure is already so poor that many people could end up drowning. It's one of the poorest Caribbean countries sadly after years of socialism...

It sounds like Jamaica is going to take the worst of it. At least right now. Who really knows how it's all going to play out. Either way, it's not really good for anyone.

True, Jamaica isn't exactly rich either, but they are used to hurricanes so hopefully they'll get through it OK. The bad news is it's already a high crime country and that may get worse after this plows through!

I'm pretty sure I have one of those too, they are just such cool coins! That is a really pretty one you have, the Franklin Mint really did some amazing work on those coins back in the day. How is your week going so far?

Ah yes Barbados I went to one leave from Africa. People who had been said it would be a waste of money as we had better more secluded beaches in Gabon and they were right lol! Had some great food and met some great people there though and that rum yum yum!

They do have some great rums! Some of the extra aged ones are rather expensive! It sure is a pretty place with great food and very nice people. I wouldn't mind a return visit myself! But you will be in Florida come spring time, a nice second best!
