In commemoration of World Rabies Day on September 28th.

Theme: "Act Now: You, Me, Community"

Rabies is a lethal, acute viral disease that affects mammals and usually transmitted via infected secretions.

How Do You Get Rabies?
It is transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch from infected animals like dogs, racoons, foxes and bats.
Dogs are the commonest because of their close relation with humans.

Prevention of Rabies
Prevention of Bites is very important in the prevention of rabies;
Some important tips

1. Don't run when a dog approaches, just keep calm and still.
2. Don't approach or disturb a dog especially while eating, sleeping, tied up or protecting it's puppies.
3. Avoid dogs that are looking angry, sick, scared or hiding. Let them be!

If a Bite Occurs
it is important to act immediately to prevent or reduce the risk of getting infected

1. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. The aim is to wash off as many organisms as possible from the wound.
2. After washing the wound, apply antiseptic solution like iodine to kill remaining germs. Don't cover the wound.
3. Rush the individual to a hospital immediately afterwards.

The theme for this year's World Rabies Day suggests that immediate action is a responsibility of you, me and the community. Part of this action is to educate children on how to behave around dogs, just like we have mentioned above.

Also dog owners should ensure that their dogs are adequately vaccinated against rabies.
