Notifications, Rain, and a High School Flashback
My phones message box is overflowing with notifications. Most of them are just promotional messages about phone call minutes and internet MB packages. But one message stood out among the rest:
Due to strong monsoon winds over the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, there will be scattered to widespread heavy rainfall across many parts of Myanmar from today until July 28, 2025. Coastal and offshore regions may experience frequent rain, strong winds, and very high waves. Wind speeds could reach 4045 miles per hour, with wave heights between 10 to 16 feet.
Around 10 p.m., the rain began. And it continued without pause until about 10 a.m. this morning. That long, steady rain led me to pick up a book: Pan Kyaung by Min Lu. I havent even made it halfway through, yet Im already chuckling.
Its a short novel written in a lighthearted, playful tone, based on the lives of 10th-grade students. Reading it reminded me of my own pure, innocent days as a high school student.
Theres a funny scene from my own life that mirrors the kind of humor in the book, and Id like to share it.
At school, during the morning, our class teacher would take attendance in class, and then during assembly, another teacher would check it again outside. The class teacher was an older, calm woman, so no one dared to fool around with her. But one day, the attendance was checked by a young, charming English teacher named Daw Aye Thwe, who was probably only around 20 years old at the time.
She began calling names:
Teacher: Aung Myint
Student: "Here!"
Teacher: May Tha Zin
Student: "Yes, Im here!"
When it came to a girl who was absent, all the girls politely said, Shes not here. But I trying to be cheeky blurted out loudly:
She ran off with her boyfriend!
All the boys burst into laughter.
The teacher didnt catch what I said, but she noticed all of us boys laughing, so she adjusted her glasses and gave us a sideways glare. But even that look wasn't scary it was adorable. That made us boys like her even more, crushing on her quietly.
High school life was pure, energetic, and filled with unfiltered behavior. Reading this book made me remember my old friends. I wonder now are they all married with children? Are they successful entrepreneurs or businesspeople?
As for me Im still unmarried, still not successful, and not a business owner either.
Im just a 30-year-old man sharing his thoughts on Hive Blog.
