We are slowly losing touch with fresh food.

I welcome you to my blog. We all miss the days where we could easily access fresh foods. These days, the very few fresh foods that hit the market come at a price that not everyone can afford. Nothing beats the taste of fresh food, as well as the nutrients it provides to the body. Today all we have is canned food, and we are slowly forgetting what it feels like to have a taste of fresh food directly from the farm. The prices of everything continue to skyrocket, and not even farm produce is exempt.

I went to our local market here in school, and I realized every piece of fresh food on the table was worth three times more than it used to be. Normally, these fresh foods were less expensive compared to canned or already-processed foods, but today the reverse is the case. These already-processed foods now cost less than fresh foods. Imagine buying five fruits of tomatoes for 500 naira ($0.36) while a sachet of tomatoes costs 200 naira ($0.14). These fresh foods are more nutritious, but the cost has forced a lot of people to go for already processed foods, which provide the body with little or no nutrients at all.

The taste of meals prepared with fresh ingredients is always different and better than that of those prepared with already-processed ingredients. Such meals are also more nutritious than those prepared with already-processed ingredients. My mom spoilt the taste and fun of noodles for me when she said noodles would only be prepared with vegetables. At first, I did not like the idea of it, but after reading how nutritious and helpful to health vegetables can be, I had to force myself to like it, and I don't regret it.

Taking my country, Nigeria, as a case study, a lot of things hinder the production and distribution of agricultural produce, one of which is insecurity. Insecurity has really affected agriculture and has limited the growth of the agricultural sector of the country. Many farmers fear for their lives and leave their crops on the farm to rot because they might go there and not return. The herdsmen keep slaughtering these farmers for fun, and no one is saying or doing anything about it. Many of these crops cultivated in areas where these killings take place can no longer be afforded in the market as we have limited supply.

Education of farmers: many of these farmers need to be educated on how to go about their farming activities. Sometime back in my community, an agricultural firm brought a modified cassava stem and shared it among the farmers without giving them the basic knowledge on how to go about the planting and cultivation of this stem. The following year, they harvested nothing since it died off, and the few that survived did not yield anything.

The government needs to take the agricultural sector of the country seriously and try to solve all the problems facing the agricultural sector of the country; otherwise, a time will come when we will have little or nothing to feed. The country's population continues to grow while the food production of the country stays stagnant; the equation is not balanced, and it's only a matter of time before things get out of hand.
