The macaws of Caurimare

In the city of Caracas, you can see birds, especially if there are green areas nearby. Among these birds, macaws stand out, especially blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna). In a previous post, I shared photos of one of the many visits this species of macaw makes to the trees in and around the neighborhood where I live.

Recently, I visited a friend's future apartment twice, and on both occasions, I saw macaws nearby, especially in front of the building, where there are palm trees, one of which is dry and I believe is being used as a nest by a pair of macaws.

If you have ever seen even one macaw, I hope it was in the wild, as I believe birds are happiest in freedom. Secondly, if you have seen them, you will surely have noticed their characteristic sound, as they are birds that make themselves heard when they are nearby.

It was precisely thanks to their sound that I noticed their presence in the area, and on the first day I managed to take two photographs of a group, but yesterday, while waiting for my friend, I was able to observe them a little more closely, and this time there were only two in the area, and they were near a dry palm tree outside the building. I assume that they have or are building their nest there, and perhaps they already have some eggs or chicks there.

The pair of macaws in question were sometimes together in the hollow of the palm tree and sometimes only one was there, but there was always one there and the other in the nearest palm tree, but both were very attentive, which is why I think, as I mentioned, that they have their nest there.

Taking the photographs was a challenge, but thanks to the zoom on my cell phone camera, I managed to get the shots you can see. As you can see, it was a cloudy day, and at times I thought the shots had not turned out well because my hand was shaking, but it was more a matter of perception due to the zoom used, as the palm trees are quite tall and if I had taken the shots without the zoom, the birds would not have been visible.

On the other hand, you may not know this, but although this species of bird is much loved and valued in the city of Caracas, and is even considered a symbol of connection with nature because they often perch on the windows of buildings and form relationships with some Caracas residents who feed them, they are not native to the area. It is believed that these birds arrived in Caracas mainly through illegal animal trafficking and, to a lesser extent, thanks to city residents who released them or when they escaped Reinas del cielo caraqueño: ¿Cómo llegaron las guacamayas a la capital de Venezuela?. Over time, they managed to reproduce and adapt to this city, finding food and shelter in parks, trees, and other places.

Returning to the pair I managed to photograph, I don't know if it was just my imagination, but it seemed to me that they were very attentive to our presence in the area. Remember that these monogamous birds tend to be protective of their nests and young. In addition, I have also seen many vultures and iguanas of considerable size in this area, and it is possible that the pair, aware of the presence of these two species, are much more attentive to their nest.

In short, seeing a pair of macaws in their nest was something I thought was great, because nature is simply wonderful.

En la ciudad de Caracas se pueden ver aves, sobre todo si en las cercanías tenemos áreas verdes, entre estas aves destacan las guacamayas, en especial las Guacamayas de tonos Azul y Amarillo (Ara ararauna), en una publicación anterior compartí fotografías de una de las tantas visitas que realiza esta especie de guacamaya a los árboles dentro y cercanos a la urbanización en la que habito.

Ahora bien, en días pasados he visitado en dos ocasiones el futuro apartamento de una amiga y en ambas ocasiones he avistado guacamayas cerca, sobre todo en el frente del edificio, ya que allí hay palmas y en particular una seca, la cual creo está siendo utilizada como nido por una pareja.

Si alguna vez han visto aunque sea una guacamaya, primero espero que haya sido en libertad, ya que para mí las aves son felices en libertad y segundo, seguramente si las viste habrás notado su característico sonido, ya que son aves que se hacen sentir cuando están cerca.

Precisamente gracias a su sonido fue que me percate de su presencia en la zona y el primer día logré tomar dos fotografías a un grupo, pero ayer mientras esperaba a mi amiga las pude observar un poco más y en esta ocasión solo había dos en el lugar y estaban cerca de una palma seca que está afuera del edificio, presumo que allí tienen o están haciendo su nido, tal vez ya tengan allí algunos huevos o pichones.

La pareja de guacamayos en cuestión en ocasiones estaban juntos en sobre el hueco de la palma y en otros solo uno, pero siempre había uno allí y el otro en la palma más cercana, pero ambos muy atentos, por ello pienso, como ya mencioné, que allí tienen su nido.

Tomar las fotografías fue un reto, pero gracias al Zoom de la cámara de mi celular logré las tomas que pueden apreciar, como notaran el día estaba nublado y en ocasiones creí que las tomas no habían quedado bien, porque mi mano se movía, pero era un tema más de percepción por el Zoom utilizado, ya que las palmas son bastante altas y de haberlas tomado sin el Zoom no se hubieran podido apreciar las aves.

Por otra parte, tal vez no lo sepan, pero aunque esta especie de aves es muy querida y valorada en la ciudad de Caracas, incluso se les considera un símbolo de conexión con la naturaleza porque en muchas ocasiones se posan en las ventanas de los edificios y llegan a tener relaciones con algunos caraqueños que las alimentan, las mismas no son originarias de la zona, se cree que estás aves llegaron a Caracas principalmente a través del tráfico ilegal de animales y, en menor medida, gracias a habitantes de la ciudad que las liberaron o cuando estas se les escaparon Reinas del cielo caraqueño: ¿Cómo llegaron las guacamayas a la capital de Venezuela?. Con el tiempo, lograron reproducirse y se adaptaron a esta ciudad, encontrando alimento y refugio en parques, árboles y otros lugares.

Volviendo a la pareja que logre fotografiar, no sé si fue idea mía, pero me pareció que están muy atentos a nuestra presencia en el lugar, recordemos que estas aves monógamas suelen ser protectoras con sus nidos y crías, además en esta zona he visto también muchos zamuros e iguanas de un tamaño considerable y es posible que la pareja al conocer la presencia de estas dos especies están mucho más atentas a su nido.

En resumen, ver a una pareja de guacamayas en su nido fue algo que me pareció genial, pues la naturaleza es simplemente maravillosa
