Lauren's cookie encounter

"Science has proven all that needs to be proven, I don't believe in signs. I stick more with facts, all you're saying is superstitions", Lauren snapped after listening to the story told her by Jay about how she got saved from kidnappers with a fortune cookie.

"It's real, Lauren, you've not just experienced it before, that's why you're head over heels over science. Anyway, it's no superstition", Jay replied, trying to convince Lauren.

"Let's grab a coffee at Mr Baker's, his coffee tastes better than others. It's my favorite go-to cafe", Lauren said tapping Jay as they walked down the street to Mr Baker's cafe.

"It sure is, and do you know he has a farm?", Jay asked.

"Everyone in Townsville knew he had a farm, Jay, it's no news", Lauren replied, not surprised.

Mr Baker's cafe is just a few minutes walk from Lauren's makeup studio where Jay had visited him.

"It's my first time visiting on Friday evening. I buy a cup of coffee every morning while heading to work, but not in the evening. Today, I felt like having one. The weather is cool, and rain might fall", Lauren explained to Jay.

"You know I'm not the coffee type but you're right, the weather sure seems so cool. It's a call for a hot Baker's coffee", Jay replied excitedly as they entered the cafe.

"Hello, Mr Baker, two cups of my favorite", Lauren said, smiling at Mr Baker, who was at the counter.

"Coming right up Lauren. Hey Jay, good to see you. I see Lauren dragged you here, it's unlike you", Mr Baker said giggling.

"The weather is right for a cup of coffee, I wouldn't mind", Jay replied.

In one minute, Mr Baker dropped two cups of coffee on the lady's table with a plate of cookies.

"Is the cookie a gift?", Jay asked.

"Yo, it's Friday evening ladies, that's the tradition here. Who knows you might be fortunate", Mr Baker said with a broad smile.

Lauren and Jay weren't expecting to get a fortune cookie, as they both picked a wrap and ate. The second wrap Lauren would pick was a fortune cookie. She unwrapped it and saw a piece of paper that said, "There is more to life than science". Lauren showed it to Jay and smiled.

"This is bullshit, science has proven that everything on earth evolves due to science", Lauren tried to explain to Jay who was opening cookie wraps to see if she would be lucky to get a fortune cookie too.

"Mr Baker, science is the best, it's been proven, this fortune shit lies", Lauren said laughing out loud.

"If you say so, Lauren, I respect your stand, but for me, there is more to life than science, baby", Mr Baker replied.

Jay leaned on her chair, picked up the piece of paper Lauren had tossed aside. "You've got to admit", she said softly, looking at Lauren, who seemed not interested. "That's a weird message considering what we've been discussing earlier", Jay further said.

"Come on Jay, it's a coincidence, nothing more. Don't get yourself worked up, you're easily deceived", Lauren replied as she rolled her eyes. "The human brain is wired to find patterns, girlie," she said.

"Still", Mr Baker said, counting some cash in his hand. "It's not every time the Friday cookie speaks directly to someone"

Lauren smirked then took a gulp from her cup.

The wind began to rise outside as the cafe light flickered slightly and a distant roll of thunder was heard repeatedly. Rain began to hit the glass of the cafe.

"Seems you're right about the forecast after all", Jay whispered.

Lauren nodded then something caught her eye, it was an old photograph hanging on the wall behind Mr Baker's counter, a young lady stood in the photo smiling with a cup of coffee in her hand.

"Mr Baker, who's that?" Lauren asked, pointing at the photograph on the wall.

Mr Baker turned and then smiled sadly, "That's my late daughter, Jaydel. She passed away five years ago, hit by a drunk driver on her way home from her part-time job. That picture was taken when she graduated from high school, she wanted to study nursing", Mr Baker explained.

Lauren stared at the image, and something hit her heart, something which seemed unscientific as she couldn't explain. She felt connected to someone she had never met.

"I'm so sorry," Lauren said softly, likewise Jay.

"She was like you", Mr Baker said. "Rational and smart, always believing in science and that science has explanations for everything until one day a lady walked into the cafe with an injured dog. As you know, the hospital is far from here, and the dog was on the verge of dying. She needed help. Jaydel, with no medical knowledge, took the first aid box, helped the dog with instinct, cleaned up her wound, and helped keep the dog conscious.

Lauren and Jay listened carefully as they sipped their coffee.

"That night, Jaydel told me, "Dad, maybe science explained the how but not always the why", Mr Baker explained.

The fortune cookie paper sat untouched beside Lauren's cup. Jay gently pushed it towards her. "It's not about denying science, it's about accepting that life is in layers, some we measure, some we feel", Jay said.

The thunder came rumbling again, this time louder than before. Suddenly, a loud cry came from outside. Lauren rushed to the window to see. Across the street, a woman had slipped in the rain. A car was coming around the corner, splashing water uncontrollably, without thinking, Lauren dashed outside.

Jay shouted her name but Lauren was already there, waving at the car and pulling the woman out of the way just in time. The car screeched, honked, and passed by without causing any harm.

Breathing heavily, Lauren looked at the woman who was shaking and asked, "Are you Okay?",

"You just saved my life", the woman whispered

Lauren helped her to her feet and she couldn't believe what just happened. Her heart pounded, and she felt something deeper than what chemistry can explain. The woman went on her way, and Lauren walked back into the cafe, soaked.

With wet hands, Lauren picked up the fortune paper. "There is more to life than science", she muttered.

She remained silent as Jay sat beside her quietly. Finally, Lauren whispered, "Maybe, just maybe not everything has to be proven before it's real".

Jay smiled and shouted, "Exactly girlie".

Mr Baker gave Lauren another cup of hot coffee with another cookie which she hurriedly opened and found a paper with the words, "You're learning to listen, that's a good start".

Lauren laughed under her breath and shook her head in agreement as she continued with her coffee.

There are truly many things that science cannot explain. Like your character Lauren, many have felt a sudden impulse to do something without knowing how or why, and have saved lives, averted disasters, and seized opportunities 'by chance´

There's only so much the human mind can comprehend. There are things about life and the world that goes beyond our limited intellect as humans. Like Lauren, many educated minds choose to ignore this fact, they suppose there's a scientific explanation for everything that happens. But, then, everyone is entitled to their view of life.

Everyone is entitled to their view but I'm glad she had a change of mind

True, there's more to life than Science. In one million years to come, Science will still be studying this world. There are still too many hidden facts yet to be discovered. Good story, I say.

The truth is that science doesn't have absolute truth; there are many situations that don't make sense. The girl learned that during her experience with fortune cookies.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Excellent day.
