When the fortune cookie's message becomes a reality.

A small but famous restaurant in the heart of the city of Langu, the restaurant was famous for its delicious and tasty meals as well as its mysterious fortune cookies. People came from far and near just to have a taste for themselves as well as give their fortune cookies a try to see if they get lucky. No one knew the fortune cookies at the small restaurant held a very big secret.

Stories from many years ago have it that things turn around for whoever receives a message from the fortune cookies; for some things turned bad, and for some things turned good. The message is always hidden among thousands of cookies, but only one fortunate or unfortunate person will find it. Daniel was known to be a regular customer at the famous restaurant. Despite being a regular at the restaurant, he never believed the stories shared about the fortune cookies were real; he believed they were made up just to attract more people to the restaurant. One evening on his way to the restaurant.

"When I get to the restaurant, I will crack open one fortune cookie and see what happens. I have heard enough stories; let me have an experience myself." Daniel said to himself on his way to his favorite restaurant.

He got to the restaurant and did exactly what he had in mind, and he turned out to be that one person, but the message from the fortune cookie was kind of creepy and sent shivers down his spine.

"As from today henceforth, wherever you go, we will go with you." This was the message he saw inside of the fortune cookie.

"Hahaha." Daniel laughed, "You guys think you can scare me with this or get me to believe the stories that are told about the fortune cookies from this restaurant?" It won't work." Daniel said as he paid for the cookie and the food he ate.

He left the restaurant and headed home, but while on his way home, he had an encounter with something unusual, as he just kept having that feeling that someone was following him, but whenever he turned back to see who it was, there would be no one behind or following him, but the feeling of being followed was so strong. The following day he rushed to share with his friend what had happened to him after he received a fortune cookie message at the famous restaurant.

"Wow, that sounds kind of scary." Alex said, looking quite curious and wondering what it would feel like to be followed home by spirits.

"I must be honest with you, I feel scared and hope things don't go bad for me like in horror movies." Daniel said, looking worried as he buried his head in his palm.

"Well, if you are that scared, then maybe we should do some digging, meet other people who fit the fortune cookie message, and ask them how it was for them, as well as visit the restaurant to ask some questions." Alex suggested cheering his friend up.

"Sounds like a good idea. I am starting to wish I did not even go to the restaurant last night; I should have just cooked noodles in my apartment and saved myself the stress." Daniel responded, agreeing to Alex's suggestion.

The following day they stopped by the restaurant, but not to eat, but to ask questions. They started with Mr. Charles, who is the manager and has been the manager of the restaurant for over 3 decades. The famous restaurant is a family business, owned by his family and run by his family, so they believed Mr. Charles would provide them with the answers they needed about the fortune cookie. The moment they asked him questions about the fortune cookie, he smiled as he sat down on his chair.

"The fortune cookie happens once every two years, and whoever the message is directed to will definitely get the message, and if by any chance you got one, that means this year's message is for you." Mr. Charles said with a shaky voice, pointing at Daniel.

"When someone receives the message from the fortune cookie, like a message that sounds creepy, and creepy things start to happen, what can one do?" Daniel asked, stuttering and hoping to get a positive answer, one that solves the problem he has found himself in.

Immediately after he asked the question, Mr. Charles bent over the table towards Daniel and Alex. "For some the message is a blessing, and for some the message is a curse. In your case, I cannot say, but one thing is certain: after receiving the message, your life will never remain the same." Mr. Charles said, pointing at Daniel.

Visiting the restaurant and the interview with Mr. Charles did not really provide them with the answers they needed; they left the restaurant wondering what the message Daniel got actually meant and if his own message is a blessing or a curse. They parted ways, and Daniel went into his apartment. Like he was told, things changed; he felt very restless and felt like there was someone in his apartment with him. His light kept flickering, and he kept hearing noises in the corridor; sometimes he even heard a voice calling out for him.

With each passing day, Daniel's life went from being a very peaceful one to a very dramatic and chaotic one, from creaking floorboards to flickering lights to windows opening and closing on their own. It was at this point that he realized that everything about the fortune cookies was not made-up stories but a reality.

"I should have stayed away from the fortune cookies that night." Daniel said to himself,

What an interesting read. I love how you built suspense in the story— from Daniel’s being skeptical to the cold realization that the fortune cookies was not just a joke.

@theinkwell

I don't use AI tools to generate my stories, I only use grammarly and sometimes quilbot when grammarly malfunctions to check for grammatical errors.

I also did a check and this came up, so I am confused.

If you read the article that I linked, you will discover how using AI editors can result in your work being flagged for AI influence. Many writers are falling into this trap. They accept all changes suggested by the AI editor and this includes sentence reconstruction and rephrasing, which go far beyond the light editing that The Ink Well allows. We do not sanction the use of any editors outside of Grammarly and Google Docs, and then the writer still has to restrain themselves to ensure they stick to spelling, punctuation, and light grammar correction only. Quillbot will almost always flag as AI. We use a highly sophisticated paid AI detector that is able to pick up when writers have used AI rephrasing. The free detectors do not do well with this and this is why you may see a score of 99.96% human when we see a different score indicating a likelihood of AI influence.

Maybe Daniel shouldn't have read the fortune cookie to avoid the fears that would haunt him for a long time. A very interesting story to read.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Good day.
