Freaky Friday

There was this silence on campus. It felt like the walls themselves had gone home for the holidays as well.

My final year first semester had come to a close and while everyone else had packed up and left, I remained in school. My project was a surmounting mountain and it wasn’t going to sort itself out. The hostel felt so abandoned. There was no power and no noise. It was just me, my phone, and a half-eaten bowl of cereal on the reading table.

I was seriously stuck in a TikTok rabbit hole when a notification from WhatsApp jerked me back to reality. It was from my class group chat.

“It’s Freaky Friday guys, would it hurt to have some fun?"

I blinked at the screen. Like twice.

The message came from Amaka.

Amaka?

Amaka, the girl who practically dissolved into the walls during lectures. The same girl who never spoke in class unless she was called upon, and even when she spoke, her voice came out like a whisper wrapped in sore apology.

I stared at the message again.

There was a streak of laughing emojis and shocked GIFs that followed almost instantly. People were hyping her up, calling it her revealing moment. Some said she had finally gotten out of her shell. But there was something about it that didn’t sit right with me. My fingers hovered over my keyboard. I swear, I could’ve said something or even tried to ask a question. But no. Instead, I did what I always did when things just didn’t make sense at all; I pulled back.

I smelled a rat and it was very loud.

And so, I rolled over, plugged in my dying phone, and went to sleep.

The following morning, by 8. a.m. my phone was a battlefield. I was seeing over 400 unread messages.

Curiosity filled my head and I kind of felt half-panicked. I clicked open the class group chat. Apparently, after the initial message, someone had dropped a link to an external anonymous chat platform and that was the spark that set everything off. A place to safely vent all your concerns, emotions and thoughts.
At first, it was very harmless as people just threw light jabs at lecturers, airing petty grievances.

But slowly and slowly everything turned dark so fast.

With every screenshot, I got to understand at what length the class had gotten; accusations of students bribing their way through exams, and students who slept with lecturers for grades. Names were dropped without shame and deeply personal secrets were exposed without restraints. It was as wild as a wild fire. Worse still, people were busy reacting to the anonymous posts; laughing, dropping sarcastic comments and even making sure to encourage more drama.

I quickly rushed to my tight-knit friendship group and broke the news to them. I was so happy they seemed oblivious to the whole thing. I spilled everything. They were so shocked and grateful they had missed the whole fiasco. But the peace didn’t last long.

By that evening, the news had already reached the HOD(Head of Department)

The whole group chat was filled with tension and panic. People started deleting their comments while some left the group entirely. Some even begged the group admins to shut it down. But it was already too late.

Screenshots of the wild game had already been forwarded. Several names were matched with reactions. Anyone who in as much laughed, commented, or even participated was tagged a suspect.

Within 48 hours, the departmental office had released a circular. “All students involved in the anonymous defamation chat are to report to the department for disciplinary review.” My heart dropped.

People I held dear, close friends and even seat mates were suspended. Rumors were flying everywhere. Everyone was speculating here and there. The word “expulsion” was even thrown around carelessly.

The class rep, Daniel, decided to step in. He launched a private investigation. Talking to people, making it look like innocent conversation, comparing timestamps and trying to verify who said what.

And that’s when the truth broke out.

It was Amaka. Why was I not even that surprised?
She had posted the “Freaky Friday” message and also shared the anonymous chat link. She was also the one who compiled the screenshots and reported the entire thing to the HOD.

It turns out, she had been sent on a mission by one of the senior lecturers.

He had tasked her to bait the class. He wanted to see who was bold enough to speak ill of the department. She had been promised favors and even a scholarship, if she delivered.

But unfortunately, the trap caught more than just the intended targets.

Some people had laughed without even understanding the weight of what was going on. Some had commented carelessly. But at that point, all that didn’t matter. They were all caught in the same web.

The final verdict came three weeks later.
Every student who participated in the anonymous chat was suspended for one semester. But those who posted allegations without proof or called out names were given an extra year. A whole year.

It broke most of the class members. I saw it in their eyes. Some wouldn’t even be coming back.

I never spoke to Amaka again. We rarely spoke anyway.

She walked past me once on the faculty stairs, her face blank and so unbothered. As if nothing had happened.

I wish I could say people learned their lesson. But the truth is that university was a game, and some people just played it dirtier.

But I'm thankful that I trusted my gut, and stayed out.

Sometimes, smelling a rat is the only thing that saves you from the trap.

I suspected her as well. How all of a sudden, she came out of her shell and wanted a freaky Friday. Thank goodness you did not participate, and none of your closets friends did. Did Amake get the promised rewards for all of the stunts she pulled?

Funny enough she's in Canada now and I don't even know if it's as a result of what was promised her or her own doing. And yea till tomorrow I'm so grateful to have trusted my gut. Thanks for engaging dear.

We all have a side we hide from the world you never can tell who will snitch up on you.
But so is life ...

That being said I'm sure Amka is doing well for her self right now

I enjoyed reading this

Wow. University means different things to different people. Some people like playing dirty games, but others aren't just so concerned about the dirty games.

I'm glad you didn't fall for it, because who knows what would have happened.

Extra year my friend. Because I like being extra about things. But I’m glad I took a step back.

Amaka didn't do well at all. She made some people spend extra year in school. That is why it is good to verify a thing before you get involved. Thank you for sharing

The most annoying part is that after all the whole years in uni, she'll still carry her certificate and join everybody else.

Uni is a place to build connections with people not just to impress lecturers and get good grades. You don't know who will help u tomorrow.

While I was reading I actually suspected her too. But I couldn't conclude till I finished reading.
Now, see what she caused. Beautiful story by the way.

Oh Winnie! Before I go further, red looks good on you, and I know pretty girls to flaunt red dresses effortlessly and you are one of those

And to your story, another interesting read from you.
A lot happens in the four walls of the university and it's always good to play safe, if possible, safer.
I am just wondering which faculty or department that is to take matters so serious.
Anonymous messages are meant to be kept as fun, a little dirty and naughty yet these days the reverse is the case, it's became a place and avenue to throw shades on people, secretly drag people and call them out, some go as far as insulting and belittling others all in the name of anonymous.
My department had gotten a fair share of this act for two semesters now, different levels.
On those days, the group chat was always on fire, but the good thing is that my circle of friends never participated in the heat or euphoria of the moment, we only read and watch in silent, we've been known to be this way from year 1 so it wasn't surprising that we wouldn't be found present in any scandal or whatsoever. There was even a time those who were insulted in anonymous wanted to take matters to the HOD but they all laughed at those people for thinking to that extent and saying it wasn't that a big deal to involve the HOD

In Amaka's case, it was quite unusual of her and I don't know how or why your colleagues didn't find that fishy as well like you did or why they didn't smell the rat on time to save themselves from all those disheartening news and punishment unleashed on them.

But then again, why would a lecturer even go as far as sending a spy and setting a trap for his students? What issue does he have with the students or the department as a whole? That's another thing to worry about, another angle to look at what happened, something must have been up for that lecturer to send Amaka as an errand girl to drag the whole department into that mess.

Nevertheless, I feel bad for those who got punished for an act they probably were just vibing along with not knowing where it would land or end them.

Ooohh🥹 Thank you so much. Maybe I should wear red dresses more often then.
My dear, the underlying issues was that, the Department of Accountancy, being my department had issues with lecturers who felt my class was doing too much. We had so much bright brains who refused to bend to the status quo(Accountancy department cannot have a first class). According to the so-called lecturers, they weren't given a first-class so why should they give it to others and unfortunately these were the people at the hem of leadership. It got to a point where students were intentionally given bad scores just to reduce their GPA. Well my class revolted and the school admin said they were going to look into it. So I believe the agenda of the anonymous was to target those very bright students and believe me, they were the ones who made the class lively and jovial so I guess they couldn't just escape the fun of an anonymous chat.

I felt really bad for them but there was nothing even the school admin could do. The so called lecturers said they were falsely accused and that they needed to teach them a lesson.

Oh dear! This is so sad
How can lecturers be so bittered about other departments producing first class students, I mean it's the same organization for crying out loud and the Honours should be theirs too irrespective of the different arms, faculties, departments or units.
It is sad, very sad, but I hope they are able to get over such sad incident

Every university seems to have their own individual problems

A similar thing happened in my university way back when the lecturers were billing us unnecessarily for study materials. It got to a point where we would even pay and not get the items. Then one day we called a meeting amongst ourselves to put an end to the extortion. While we deliberated on the best possible way to be free from the shackles of our greedy lecturers, one of us was doing a voice recording and after the meeting was concluded, we resolved to report the matter to the dean on a specified date. But before that date, all the handouts we paid for were given to us. We didn't know what was going on until it was exams and the people who were involved in that meeting all got F.. I was lucky to not have uttered a word while the whole meeting was going on. Funny how the boy who even reported still failed 😂

Good thing you were able to scale through at that difficult time of your life. School life is not easy, it requires wisdom and carefulness. There is nothing more painful than having a carryover course for another full year. oh boy! that's way too crazy. Anyways thank God you found your way out of that situation. Beautiful read. Well done.

Things people do to get favor
I won’t blame amaka entirely
She was a victim too used by the lecture with promises she can’t turn a blind eye to because of her timid nature.

Something like this wanted to happen in my class but as the class rep and admin of the group chat, I deleted the link immediately and lock the group chat. They should do it somewhere else.

Lol my class rep then is the one that would engineer the whole thing.

The university environment exposes one to a lot of things and if not careful enough it will be from one problem to another. Thank God you did not fall for it.
