$2 Canadian Bill Sells For A Fortune
This is one of those crazy numismatic auction stories I love reading and blogging about.
So, an 1870 $2 Canadian banknote recently sold for a staggering $360,000 USD (or about $518,000 CAD) at Stack’s Bowers Galleries' January 2025 auction. Not bad for a piece of just 2$. Almost as good as getting 2$ worth of btc back in 2010 😂
It's not only a super old piece of "paper" from Canada’s early years after Confederation but it also came in very good condition, driving the price sky-high... Proving how rich fucks will give literal fortunes for rare numismatic pieces that have long gone defunct:
According to the auction site, all Canadian 1870 $2 notes are difficult to find. However, this one is even more special. It's actually one of a kind which explains the crazy price it went for:
That changes now, with the discovery and our subsequent offering of the unique 1870 $2 payable at Victoria, British Colombia. Even the National Currency Collection lacks an example of this note, and until now, none were even rumored to exist. 24.000 notes were reportedly printed and shipped to the Pacific Coast, but all were lost to the sands of time, until this piece recently turned up in Europe.
Still, even it is one of a kind piece.. 360k usd just sounds so ridiculous 😄💲

Wow! That's interesting. I keep some old money, perhaps they might count for something in future.
"Yeah I'll save this $2 just in case I ever need it"

This tells how rare commodities have huge value. It hits differently when you said
basically it's just super rare... doesn't seem anything special...well someone made the day there
Imagine finding this one as a bookmark in an old book...

When you're crazy rich, you pay crazy rich money for a $2 bill. It's not even made of gold or silver.. I've never been a fiat collector, I prefer the silver and gold. I love seeing just how much people will pay for an old piece of paper!

Old graded note go for big bucks if they are in superior condition. It’s much harder to get a pristine example of a piece of paper versus a coin.
Yeah makes sense they are easier to degrade

The story here is that the Dominion of Canada is trying to sweet talk the Colony of British Columbia into Confederation since there is a risk that this colony could join the USA. Also, the Russians have be trying to make inroads to claim the region.
Part of the deal is building and developing infrastructure. The line of communication was needed, hence Canada promised to link up by building the railway. The need for a bank in BC was also vital since up to 1870 the Caribou Gold Rush was in full swing. With all that gold coming out of the rugged BC Interior a Canadian bank would add considerable weight in Canada's claim to the region.
British Columbia joined the Confederation in 1871.
I believe the two dudes on this note are British General Wolf and French General Montcalm from the Battle of Montreal. The British won that battle.
Woah, nice. Thanks for the back story!

That's a life changing $2 CAD, probably a 2 Dollar worth of HIVE today will be a life changing events in the future. Who knows, until Bart Simpson notice it.
I read a lot of things found in odd places that turned out to be treasures.

One of a kind...but the price is way too high. It's only for people with too much money on their hands.
Crazy, imagine if it was a $10 bill 😂
