Apple paying $95 million in a Siri eavesdropping settlement

Consumers who own a Siri-enabled device may be eligible to file a financial claim as part of Apple's $95 million settlement over allegations that the voice assistant eavesdropped on them. Such devices include but may not be limited to iPhones, MacBooks and AppleTVs.

The payment stems from a 2021 lawsuit that alleged Siri listened to private or confidential conversations. Discussions were then allegedly shared with third-party businesses. The shared information was then allegedly used for targeted ads towards the users of the devices. Who is eligible to make a claim?

To Be Eligible:

According to the settlement website: People who owned Siri-enabled iPhones and other Apple devices between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024, and who "experienced an unintended Siri activation during a confidential or private communication," are eligible to file a claim. The settlement's final approval hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2025. When you submit your claim, you'll be asked if you want the payment to be sent via physical check, e-check or direct deposit.

There's a cap of $20 per Siri-enabled device. According to the settlement a max of five claims can be made. This means your max entitlement would be $100. Ex. If you have two qualifying devices $40 is the compensation you would be entitled to, three qualifying devices $60 would be the compensation you would be entitled to. You can submit your claim here: https://lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com/submit-claim. Some users of said devices received emails or postcards notifying them of the Apple settlement. Those emails and postcards contained a claim ID number and a confirmation code. If you are unaware of this and have such devices you might want to check your emails. The claim site has a section to insert the ID and Confirmation code. Can't find the email or postcard but think you qualify for compensation? Click New Claim on the Settlement Agreement page to do just that, file a new claim.

USA Today Article Snippet:

Anyone who's owned an Apple device since 2014 may be eligible to receive part of a $95 million class action lawsuit, which accused the tech company's famous voice assistant of spying on users.

The lawsuit, Lopez v. Apple, was filed in a California federal court in 2021 by users who allege their private conversations were being recorded by their Apple devices after unintentionally activating Siri. Although a settlement has been reached, Apple has denied the allegations made in the complaint, according to the legal notice obtained by USA TODAY.

"If you owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device and experienced an unintended Siri activation during a confidential or private communication between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024, you should read this Notice as it may impact your legal rights," the legal notice states. I believe so. However I just found out about the lawsuit today. There might be something for other countries as well. I would google lawsuit details + home residence to see if anything comes about.
