IRS crypto boss Trish Turner resigns just 3 months into the role

Trish Turner, the head of the IRS's digital assets (crypto) unit, resigned just three months into her role.

She announced her departure in August 2025, stating satisfaction in helping lay the foundation for oversight in the rapidly evolving crypto space. Turner is leaving the IRS to join a private firm that specializes in crypto tax guidance, as their tax director, and will also work with the UK-based firm.

Her resignation comes amid a challenging period for the IRS, which has faced significant budget cuts and staffing reductions under the Trump administration. The IRS workforce has declined from about 113,000 in the 1990s to around 76,000 today, complicating the agency's ability to handle a surge in cryptocurrency tax filings under new tax rules taking effect.

Turner's departure adds to the trend of key officials leaving the IRS's crypto team, following previous departures of other top IRS crypto officials earlier in the year.

Her exit leaves the IRS crypto unit without clear leadership at a crucial moment, as the agency prepares for a surge in crypto-related tax filings and new reporting requirements.

Turner characterized digital assets as having shifted from a niche matter to a core focus for regulators globally.
