Cage with an Opened Door

I just finished listening to episode 83 of the Community Token Talk podcast with @theycallmedan and @starkerz.

I understand they had some technical difficulties and there is a significant volume discrepancy between the two hosts, but if you can get over that and can spare 2+ hours, it's one of the episodes that is worth listening to.

Dan often finds surprisingly well-suited metaphors to describe certain situations. If people would listen without bias and with an open mind, some of those metaphors alone would trigger serious alarms in their minds about the direction we move as a society and us, as individuals.

The metaphor in the title is his from this episode. And it refers to the state of the crypto space and the direction it's moving toward - more centralization and control at the base layer and on the means of moving crypto, especially to and from the space to fiat, but also inside to a growing degree. But it can refer to many other aspects where we accept living in a cage because the door is open. Here's an example: living in a country with many issues because you can travel to other places and run into those issues rarely. What if the cage door closes and you suddenly are forbidden to travel? Wait... we had that.

The cage with the open door gives the illusion of freedom because you can freely get out of the cage and get in while the door is opened. But what will happen when the door gets slammed in front of you, with you inside the cage?

This threat is present in almost the entire crypto space. The problem is that most communities in crypto embrace centralization, ignoring warning signs, because that's how they attract capital, which prefers centralized systems.

We don't have "this issue" on Hive. Decentralized enough to keep VCs away from the base layer. But they aren't away from projects on Hive (Splinterlands).

We do have another issue particular to us. We are still highly dependent on a few CEXes and their listings of HIVE and (to a lesser degree) HBD. That's our cage door.

There are some alternatives and, others are being built as we speak.

  • We have wrapped HIVE and HBD on BSC and Polygon, thanks to the Leo team
  • SPS from Splinterlands can also be found on BSC and Ethereum and on a series of CEXes
  • LEO has its wrapped versions on BSC, Ethereum and Polygon
  • There are wrapped versions of major coins on Hive-Engine, but liquidity is low
  • There is v4v.app, the option to exchange HIVE/HBD to bitcoin on the Lightning Network (and back), via the node and sats liquidity provided by @brianoflondon (for small transfers)

Dan and Matt (and the devs) have been talking for a while about creating a decentralized way to move HIVE to bitcoin. Work is in progress, as far as I know, but haven't paid attention to details yet.

Once we have that, a decentralized connection between HIVE and bitcoin, plus all the connections of bitcoin to everything else and the fact it was declared not a security, we would have made sure this door doesn't close in our faces either.

What doors should we pay attention to next?

I think there are still a ton of centralized projects on Hive so I think we still have to pay attention to that. I have seen quite a few projects die because people just leave or they rug-pull things. So I do think that things on Hive are better but it's not completely there yet.

I agree that some projects were/are not doing well and their centralization doesn't help. But on top of the base layer, we need some centralization (or a second layer less oriented in securing assets, which would be secured on the base layer) to improve user experience. What is very important to secure and decentralize (to some degree) is the base layer.

No worries. It was difficult at times to hear you, especially when it started to rain around here, but I believe I got most of it.

Maybe the guys from DNS Media can work some magic on volume levels after the fact to be able to extract some impactful shorts from the podcast.

Hello @gadrian Thank you for this post about, "Cage with an Open Door." This is true. How will we keep the governments from closing the door in our faces? It is wrong on them. Why can't they see how wrong they are? I guess it's because it's based on entire greed and evil. The banks control the governments. I will go listen to episode 83. Thank you and have a great day! We have that neverending problem, or better say circle... We would like to be more decentralized, but we wouldn't like to lose our centralized power (speaking in the name of whales 😀)...
And the other thing, regarding CEXes... The final goal should be what those great Hivers are doing in some part of Venezuela... Spending HIVE/HBD directly in the shops, without exchanging it for anything else... That should be our "final goal"... the rest is "just" the way how to reach that goal... :)

I loved what starkerz said in one previous episode: "we will force freedom on you". And I will paraphrase: "we will force (enough) decentralization on you".

That would be ideal. But I'm afraid in the more stable economies, where lots of people are saving for vacations instead of eating every month, it will be much more difficult for HBD to penetrate. Not to mention the governments would be all over businesses that would dare add it as a payment option.

Yeah, those are real threats to freedoms... Of you would like to buy bread with HBD, you will have to do it on the dark web... They can create the image of crypto as something illegal and dirty whenever they want... It's crazy how reality can be "changed" with brainwashing

Even now there are many small projects working on this platform which are not decentralized and need attention.

There are many centralized projects on Hive. I'd say the majority of them. As long as Hive itself is decentralized enough is still much better than anywhere else. And if those centralized assets are secured by Hive, it's still a gain. Tokenomics for a project can still be a problem when the owner can change it at his whim (a multisig account would be better, maybe?).

But I understand what you're saying. For now, they want to keep the masses relatively happy, whatever happy still means.
