Ist ein Bitcoin teilbar?

Der Euro und Dollar haben Cent als kleinste Einheit und Bitcoin hat Satoshis. Doch während ein Cent ein Hundertstel eines Euros oder Dollar ausmacht (0.01 Cent), entspricht ein Satoshi einem Hundertmillionstel eines Bitcoins (0.00000001).

Die kleinste Einheit Satoshi heisst umgangssprachlich Sat. Der Kauf davon lohnt sich allerdings selten, denn die Transaktionsgebühren im Bitcoinnetzwerk betragen aktuell mehrere Dollar.

Wie werden Bitcoins «produziert»?

Bitcoins werden nicht «produziert», sie werden sogenannt gemint. Zu diesem Zweck kommen spezifisch dafür konzipierte Computer, sogenannte ASIC-Miner, zum Einsatz. Sie bilden gleichzeitig die Knotenpunkte im Netzwerk. Zusammen validieren sie die Transaktionen, stehen aber untereinander in Konkurrenz, wenn es darum geht, eine Art komplexe mathematische Aufgabe zu lösen. Wer das als Erster schafft, darf der Bitcoin-Blockchain (Block-Kette) den nächsten (Daten–) Block anhängen. Zur Belohnung dafür gibt es Bitcoins – 6.25 aktuell. Im Schnitt wird der Bitcoin-Blockchain alle 10 Minuten ein neuer Block angehängt. Pro Tag werden also ca. 900 Bitcoins geschürft. In ungefähr 66 Tagen (Stand: 18.2.2024) findet ein sogenanntes «Halving» statt. Ab diesem Termin wird die Belohnung halbiert, auf 3.125 Bitcoins pro Block.

Kann ich selbst Bitcoins minen?

Ja. Theoretisch reicht dafür jeder Computer.

Die Frage ist, ob sich das lohnt. Das Mining-Business ist heute hoch professionalisiert und diverse Mining-Firmen betreiben riesige Lagerhallen voller ASIC-Miner. Nur wer Zugang zu extrem günstigem Strom hat, kann profitabel minen.

Vom Bitcoin-Mining würde ich Anfängern definitiv abraten. Es ist schon eine enorme Herausforderung, die Anschaffungskosten wieder einzuspielen. Die Stromkosten und die enorme Lärmbelästigung die nächste Herausforderung.

Is a Bitcoin divisible?

The euro and dollar have cents as the smallest unit and Bitcoin has satoshis. But while a cent is one hundredth of a euro or dollar (0.01 cent), one satoshi is one hundred millionth of a bitcoin (0.00000001).

The smallest unit, Satoshi, is colloquially called Sat. However, buying it is rarely worth it, as the transaction fees in the Bitcoin network currently amount to several dollars.

How are Bitcoins “produced”?

Bitcoins are not “produced”, they are so-called mined. For this purpose, specifically designed computers, so-called ASIC miners, are used. At the same time, they form the nodes in the network. Together they validate the transactions, but compete with each other when it comes to solving some kind of complex mathematical problem. Whoever does this first can add the next (data) block to the Bitcoin blockchain (block chain). The reward for this is Bitcoins – 6.25 currently. On average, a new block is added to the Bitcoin blockchain every 10 minutes. So around 900 Bitcoins are mined every day. A so-called “halving” will take place in approximately 66 days (as of February 18, 2024). From this date onwards, the reward will be halved to 3,125 Bitcoins per block.

Can I mine Bitcoins myself?

Yes. Theoretically, any computer is sufficient for this.

The question is whether it's worth it. The mining business is now highly professionalized and various mining companies operate huge warehouses full of ASIC miners. Only those who have access to extremely cheap electricity can mine profitably.

I would definitely advise beginners against Bitcoin mining. It is an enormous challenge to recoup the acquisition costs. The electricity costs and the enormous noise pollution are the next challenge.
