This weekend I finally finished watching a K-drama. The premise seemed interesting, and the actors were good, which made me give it a chance. However, it had quite a few flaws. The first few episodes were captivating, but as the story progressed, it became monotonous and lacked elements that connected the different parts well. But, without going into too much detail, here are my impressions.
Lovers of the Red Sky (홍천기)….
Released in 2021, with a total of 16 episodes, directed by Jang Tae-yoo, and starring Ahn Hyo-seop, Kim Yoo-jung, Gong Myung, and Kwak Si-yang; a story full of romance, fantasy, and historical elements.
What's the plot about?…
The story begins years before the protagonists' present, where a ceremony is held to exorcise the demon inhabiting the body of the current emperor. This requires a royal portrait, and two families (besides the royal family) are involved: Hong Chun-gi's (our protagonist's) father, who is the painter tasked with completing the portrait, and Ha Ram's (our protagonist's) father, who is the official leading the spiritual ritual, essentially acting as a shaman. Although the ritual is carried out "successfully," the demon casts a final curse: the kingdom will suffer droughts and famine, and the descendants of those who sealed it away will pay the price.
Chun-gi's father loses his sanity and his daughter is born blind. Nine years later, she encounters Ha Ram, with whom she shares a brief, tender moment, promising to meet again. However, during a sacrificial ceremony to summon rain, something goes wrong at the climax of the rain ritual. The portrait (in which the demon was sealed) burns, and Ma Wang is freed for a moment. To prevent the demon from regaining his full power, the Deity of Life (Samshin) intervenes, sealing the demon's body within the child, who dies for a few moments. To ensure the demon is powerless, Samshin removes his source of power—his eyes—and gives them to young Chun-gi.
Thus begins the story of a young girl, formerly blind but now able to see, who becomes a talented painter (the only woman at the academy), while Ha Ram is a blind astrologer capable of reading the heavens despite their darkness. Although they don't recognize each other immediately, the attraction is instantaneous, but their connection also awakens the demon that dwells within Ha Ram. Therefore, the journey to restore the King's portrait begins, not only to save Ram, but also everyone from the darkness that looms over the kingdom.
Personal opinion
This story had a good foundation and very good actors, but, as I mentioned, at one point in the plot it became boring and things dragged on too long. I even feel that 16 chapters were too much for the development, and it ended with a dilemma and a desire to know what happened next. That's regarding the secondary characters, while the protagonists did get an acceptable ending. Another thing I didn't like was the romantic development between the protagonists. I found it sweet when they were children and thought it would be better developed as they grew up, but no, their interaction just wasn't engaging. There wasn't that chemistry that many other K-drama protagonists manage to convey. It was more like, "I'm already madly in love with you," without going any deeper into their relationship. Although the few scenes that did manage to evoke that romantic feeling were nice, mmm, something was missing for me. I don't know, I felt more tenderness and affection from her towards him, but it wasn't like the job offer scene with him.
But it's not all bad, wait, because visually it's beautiful despite everything. Chun-gi Paints isn't just about transitions; it's about poetic moments where you can feel the texture of the paper and the flow of the ink. And, being a Fine Arts graduate, I really appreciate that aspect, even though some might consider it a bit boring. They don't know how beautiful it is to see that aspect. As I said, the story had a solid foundation, a solid mythology of its own that could have been explored much better. However, what they were trying to achieve was so rushed and repetitive that it lost its focus. Plus, what on earth was that ending? I mean, it's fine with the main characters; they tied up loose ends regarding them, but with the second male character, they went too far, leaving us in suspense about what would happen to him.
Positive points…
-The scenes and cinematography in general are very beautiful and well-crafted.
-The original mythology is captivating.
-The soundtrack is commendable; it complements the story very well.
Negative points…
-Slow pacing.
-Repetitive plot.
-Lack of character development.
-Lack of depth in the romance, even though there are tender moments.
-Lack of conflict resolution.

It's a K-drama that could have improved the way its characters developed within its created world, along with the love story and all that. It did fall short in how it handled the conflicts it presented, but if you're looking for a drama with a lot of visual and emotional substance, the positive points far outweigh the negatives, I can assure you of that.

Este fin de semana logré terminar de ver un k-drama, el cual, se me hacia una premisa interesante y con buenos actores, algo que me hizo darle una oportunidad, sin embargo, pues tuvo bastantes fallos, los primeros capítulos eran atrapantes, ya a medida que avanzaba la historia, pues si se me hizo monótono y con falta de elementos que enlazaran bien una cosa con la otra. Pero, para no profundizar todavía más, les dejó mis impresiones.

Estrenado en el año 2021, con un total de 16 episodios, contando con la dirección de Jang Tae-yoo, con la protagonización de Ahn Hyo-seop, Kim Yoo-jung, Gong Myung y Kwak Si-yang; una historia llena de romance, fantasía e histórica.
¿De qué va la trama?…
La historia arranca años atrás del presente de los protagonistas, donde hay una ceremonia para llevar al demonio que habita en el cuerpo del emperador actual, para ello se requiere un retrato real, participando en si dos familias (además de la realeza) El padre de Hong Chun-gi (nuestra protagonista) que es el pintor encargado de terminar el retrato y el padre de Ha Ram (nuestro protagonista), que es el oficial que lidera el ritual espiritual, básicamente como el chamán, algo así. Aunque el ritual es llevado con “éxito”, el demonio lanza una maldición final: el reino sufrirá sequías y hambre, y los descendientes de quienes lo sellaron pagarán el precio.
El padre de Chun-gi pierde la cordura y su hija nace ciega, la cual nueve años después se encuentra a Ha Ram, quién comparte un breve momento tierno, prometiendo encontrarse; sin embargo, Ha Ram, durante una ceremonia de sacrificio para lograr atraer el agua. Durante el clímax del ritual de lluvia, algo sale mal, pues el retrato (donde se encontraba sellado el demonio) se quema y Ma Wang queda libre por un instante; para evitar que el demonio recupere todo su poder, la Deidad de la Vida (Samshin) interviene, sellando el cuerpo del demonio en el pequeño, quién murió por unos instantes, pero, para que este demonio no tenga poder, le quita su fuente de poder, que es los ojos, dándoselos a la pequeña Chun-gi.
Así, comienza la historia de una niña, que antes era ciega y ahora puede ver, convirtiéndose en una talentosa pintora (la única mujer en la academia), mientras que, Ha Ram, es un astrólogo ciego capaz de leer los cielos a pesar de su oscuridad. Aunque no se reconocen de inmediato, la atracción es instantánea, pero su conexión despierta también al demonio que habita en el interior de Ha Ram, por lo que aquí comenzará la travesía de restaurar el retrato del Rey y no solo salvar a Ram, también a todos de la oscuridad que se asoma al reino.
Opinión personal
Esta historia tenia una buena base y actores muy buenos, pero, como mencioné, en un punto de la trama se me hizo aburrida y que, alargaban las cosas de más, e incluso, siento que 16 capítulos fueron mucho para el desarrollo y de paso terminó en un dilema y con ganas de saber que más paso, eso en cuanto a los personajes secundarios, mientras que, con los protagonistas si tenemos un cierre aceptable. Otras de las cosas que no me gusto fue el desarrollo amoroso entre sus protagonistas, porque se me hacia tierno cuando eran niños y pensé que de grande iba a ser mejor abarcado, pero no, más bien la interacción no te llamaba, no se sentía esa química que muchos otros protagonistas de k-dramas logran emitir, era como que, estoy enamorada ya locamente de ti, sin ir más a fondo de su relación, aunque las pocas escenas que si logra esa emoción de amor son bonitas, mmm, me falto algo más en ellos, no sé, por parte de ella sentía más esa ternura y cariño hacia él, pero a él, no pasó como con la de propuesta laboral.
Pero, no todo esta mal, espérate, que en referencia al aspecto visual es hermosa a pesar de todo, Chun-gi pinta no son solo transiciones, son momentos poéticos donde se siente la textura del papel y la fluidez de la tinta y, siendo licenciada en Artes Plásticas, pues aprecio mucho ese aspecto, aunque algunos pueden considerarlo algo aburrida, no saben lo hermoso que es ver ese aspecto. Como he dicho, la historia tenía una base sólida, una mitología propia solida que pudo haberse explotado mucho mejor, no obstante, en esto fue tan rápido y tan repetitivo lo que querían lograr, que perdió su enfoque, aunado que ¿qué rayos fue ese final? Es decir, todo bien con los protagonistas principales, terminaron atando cabos sueltos con referencia a ellos, pero con el segundo masculino se pasaron en dejarnos en incertidumbre que pasaría con él.
Puntos positivos…
-Escenas y la cinematografía en general es bien bonita y cuidada.
-Mitología original que atrapa.
-La banda sonora es elogiable, acompaña muy bien la historia.
Puntos negativos…
-Ritmo lento.
-Trama repetitiva.
-Falta de desarrollo en sus personajes.
-Falta de profundidad en el romance, aun cuando hay partes tiernas.
-Falta de resolución de conflictos.
Puntaje que le doy…

Es un k-drama que le falto mejorar el aspecto en cómo se desenvolvía sus personajes en ese mundo creado, aunado, del amor y todo eso, si fallo en cómo abordaba los conflictos que planteada, pero si buscas un drama con mucha sustancia visual y emocional, los puntos positivos superan por mucho a los negativos, eso se los puedo asegurar.

Me pasa constantemente que cuando voy a empezar un kdrama suelen volverse muy lentos en la mitad del camino, tal vez sea porque los que me gusta ver o me llaman la atención son más de género drama y estos tienen una historia más complicada por así decirlo de explicarla. Las de historia no son de mis favoritas, pero se que hay algunas muy buenas, como en cualquiera de los géneros que existen. Gracias por compartir tu opinión sincera sobre esta serie. Un abrazo 🫶🏽
Si, tampoco es que soy muy fan de ese estilo tradicional, de epoca pues, pero mcuhas veces la veo por la tematica o los protagonistas, en este sucedio por la segunda opciones y bueno, estaba interesante al inicio, pero siendo sincera, la terminé por terminarla, perdió como el ritmo y la atención en la mitad.
