Good Fortune: Choosing Between Freedom And Success.

Have you ever pictured yourself switching places with someone you admire so much? Imagine switching places with the richest person on earth or the smartest tech mogul you know just to get a feel of how living in their shoes would feel like. Many times, after such a series of imagination, we console ourselves saying “their lives are not all sunshine and rainbows. They probably face challenges too” but what if they don't? What if they're living their best lives yet.

About The Movie

Good fortune is a comedy drama film directed by Aziz Ansari in his feature directorial debut. The movie was released on the 17th of October, 2025 and stars actors like Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer and Seth Rogen.

The movie revolves around the supernatural where Gabriel, a well-meaning but inexperienced guardian angel, swaps the lives of Arj, a struggling gig worker with that of Jeff who is a wealthy tech mogul just to prove that money does not guarantee happiness.

My Opinion

The film follows Arj, who barely makes ends meet and Jeff who lives a life of excess luxury. Gabriel, a guardian angel whose main duty is to prevent road accidents from happening to those who text and drive, decides to go beyond his scope and swap the lives of Arj and Jeff. Although the plan is meant to teach Arj about the true nature of happiness beyond material wealth, unexpected complications arise and things get even more serious when Gabriel loses his wings.

The movie addresses the complex themes of wealth and happiness, showing that money alone isn't an individual’s ticket to happiness. It also throws some light on the economic inequality of those who jump from one menial job to another. They seem to be taking on so many jobs but can barely make ends meet. The movie also touches on empathy, self-discovery, community, success and materialism.

The characters didn't exactly perform exceptionally but they were all ideal for their different roles. If I'm being honest, it felt like the main characters were underused. For someone who is used to seeing some of the main characters playing more actionable roles, I felt meh about their roles in this movie. The supporting characters also helped in adding more depth to the movie.

One concept that provided creative and comedic moments was the body-swap concepts. It got even better when Arj knew he was in Jeff’s body but Jeff didn't have the luxury of this knowledge. There were moments where the comedy was more pronounced and moments when they were more subtle but generally the comedic aspect of the movie came together pretty well.

The ending of the movie, although very predictable, had an emotional tone to it. It was what you'd expect from a typical body swap movie but nonetheless, it was still a good watch.

Recommendation and Rating.

Good Fortune is a feel good movie well suited for those who appreciate comedy and specks of emotions. If you like seeing body swap movies and are interested in some of the themes I mentioned above, this would be a good watch for you. I would give the movie a 7 out of 10 rating because even if it isn't a titillating movie, it is a decent watch.
