Al escuchar "The Watcher", lo primero que probablemente venga a nuestra mente es una persona que observa y una sensación de misterio. La serie del mismo nombre dirigida por Ryan Murphy y basada en hechos reales estrenada en Netflix el 2022, se gano en su momento un lugar en el ranking de series más populares en la plataforma, al gustarme el misterio, le tuve el ojo puesto, pero por ocupaciones nunca la vi. Hace poco me dispuse a verla y me termino gustando.

Desde el primer episodio, "The Watcher" nos introduce en el misterio que gira en torno a una familia que acaba de mudarse a una mansión en una zona exclusiva. Los Brannock, son una familia de esas que parece tenerlo todo, una casa increible, una vida "perfecta" y un futuro lleno de posibilidades, pero, pronto esa felicidad se ve trastornada por una carta anónima de un extraño que se hace llamar The Watcher, en español "El Observador".

La carta, escrita de tal manera que evidencia malas intenciones, rozando más allá de lo inquietante, es solo el principio del tormento de la familia. ¿Quién podria estar tranquilo sabiendo que esta siendo observado dentro de su propio hogar? Las cartas se vuelven cada vez más perturbadoras y lo que podria parecer una broma de mal gusto, se convierte rápidamente en una pesadilla llena de paranoias y, mientras tratan de descubrir quién o quienes estan detrás de las cartas, los Brannock se ven envueltos en una red de secretos, mentiras y personas sospechosas que parecen estar involucradas, de alguna manera, en el misterio.

La serie, a mi parecer, es bastante pintoresca, sus personajes particulares y es entretenido todo el tema de resolver los misterios (porque son varios). La forma en que cada vez todo se va volviendo más tenso y los secretos oscuros que parecen tener todos los vecinos, hacen que uno nunca sepa si están más cerca de la verdad o si simplemente se están autodestruyendo. Diría que los personajes son la esencia de la serie, y aunque muchos de ellos podrían parecer clichés, no dejan de ser lo que le da el toque a la historia.

Uno de los mayores logros de "The Watcher" es cómo, a lo largo de los episodios, todos los personajes se convierten en sospechosos potenciales, lo que aumenta la sensación de desconfianza. El hecho de que todos tengan algo que ocultar añade una capa de complejidad y ambigüedad que mantiene a uno como espectador con ganas de ver más. También la estética tiene su rol importante, se destaca el aprecio por la arquitectura y cómo una casa puede generar muchos y diversos sentimientos en las personas.

Además, el vecindario, con sus árboles y casas lujosas, parece el lugar perfecto para una serie de terror psicológico. Es ese tipo de lugar que, si no fuera por la constante sensación de peligro, podrías imaginar como un sueño hecho realidad. Sin embargo, la serie juega magistralmente con la dualidad de la belleza exterior y la oscuridad interior.

The Watcher, aunque está basada en una historia real, se toma varias libertades creativas que hacen que el misterio sea aún más desconcertante. La idea de un "observador" que se infiltra en la vida de una familia desconocida es algo que, si bien tiene un fundamento real, se siente mucho más escalofriante y psicológico en el contexto de la serie. La narrativa no solo gira alrededor del misterio de quién está observando a los Brannock, sino que explora la paranoia y la ansiedad que surgen cuando no puedes confiar ni en los más cercanos a ti.

No voy a entrar en detalles respecto al final, me resultó interesante, pero puedo decir que la serie no ofrece una respuesta clara ni un cierre sencillo. Si te gustan las historias que te hacen cuestionar la realidad y los misterios, "The Watcher" es, sin duda, una de las mejores opciones que Netflix tiene para ofrecer en el género.

When we hear “The Watcher,” the first thing that probably comes to mind is a person who observes and a sense of mystery. The series of the same name directed by Ryan Murphy and based on real events premiered on Netflix in 2022. It earned a place in the ranking of the most popular series on the platform. Since I like mysteries, I had my eye on it, but due to other commitments, I never got around to watching it. I recently decided to watch it and ended up liking it.

From the first episode, “The Watcher” introduces us to the mystery surrounding a family that has just moved into a mansion in an exclusive neighborhood. The Brannocks are one of those families that seem to have it all: an incredible house, a “perfect” life, and a future full of possibilities. However, their happiness is soon disrupted by an anonymous letter from a stranger who calls himself The Watcher.

The letter, written in such a way as to reveal malicious intent, bordering on the disturbing, is only the beginning of the family's torment. Who could remain calm knowing they are being watched inside their own home? The letters become increasingly disturbing, and what might seem like a bad joke quickly turns into a nightmare filled with paranoia. As they try to discover who is behind the letters, the Brannocks find themselves entangled in a web of secrets, lies, and suspicious people who seem to be involved in the mystery in some way.

In my opinion, the series is quite picturesque, with unique characters and an entertaining mystery-solving theme (because there are several mysteries). The way everything becomes increasingly tense and the dark secrets that all the neighbors seem to have make you never know if they are closer to the truth or if they are simply self-destructing. I would say that the characters are the essence of the series, and although many of them may seem clichéd, they are what give the story its flavor.

One of the greatest achievements of “The Watcher” is how, throughout the episodes, all the characters become potential suspects, which increases the feeling of mistrust. The fact that everyone has something to hide adds a layer of complexity and ambiguity that keeps viewers wanting to see more. The aesthetics also play an important role, highlighting an appreciation for architecture and how a house can generate many different feelings in people.

In addition, the neighborhood, with its trees and luxurious houses, seems like the perfect setting for a psychological horror series. It's the kind of place that, if it weren't for the constant sense of danger, you could imagine as a dream come true. However, the series masterfully plays with the duality of outer beauty and inner darkness.

The Watcher, although based on a true story, takes several creative liberties that make the mystery even more unsettling. The idea of an “observer” infiltrating the life of an unknown family is something that, while based on reality, feels much more chilling and psychological in the context of the series. The narrative not only revolves around the mystery of who is watching the Brannocks, but also explores the paranoia and anxiety that arise when you can't trust even those closest to you.

I won't go into detail about the ending, which I found interesting, but I can say that the series offers no clear answer or easy closure. If you like stories that make you question reality and mysteries, “The Watcher” is undoubtedly one of the best options Netflix has to offer in the genre.
