This is one of the first comedy films that comes to mind whenever I think or talk about Jim Carrey. And it's no wonder, since, apart from being one of his most famous classics, it's also one of the films I watched most often on television when I was a child. Honestly, I watched it so many times that I remember it from beginning to end. Whether it's because of Jim Carrey's great performance or the interesting story it tells, Liar Liar is one of those comedies that are hard to forget. If you're a real Carrey fan or just like these kinds of classic comedies, then you have to see this movie, even if you've seen it before.

Obviously, I should warn you that it's not a movie for all audiences, at least not for watching with children (unlike in my case, where I saw it a lot when I was little). While the humor in this film isn't as strong as in the previous Jim Carrey movies I've mentioned, it still has double entendres and a tone that was very adult for its time. But anyway, compared to the acid and absurd humor currently seen in the world of cinema, I think this type of humor from before is better. Of course, it's just my opinion, but it's a fact that there's no one like Carrey when it comes to making you laugh at anything.

Esta es de las primeras películas de comedia que recuerdo cada vez que pienso o hablo de Jim Carrey. Y no es de menos hacerlo ya que, aparte de ser uno de sus clásicos más famosos, es también una de sus películas que más veía cuando era pequeño en la televisión. De verdad, fueron tantas las veces que la ví que la recuerdo completamente de inicio a fin. Ya sea por la gran actuación de Jim Carrey o por la interesante historia que nos cuenta, Liar Liar es de esas cintas cómicas que son difíciles de olvidar. Si de verdad eres fan de Carrey o simplemente te gustan este tipo de comedias clásicas, entonces tienes que ver esta película, aún si ya la has visto antes.

Obviamente, desde ya les advierto que no es una película para todo tipo de públicos, al menos no para verla con los niños (a diferencia de mi caso que la vi mucho cuando era pequeño). Si bien el humor que tiene esta cinta no es tan fuerte como el que tienen las películas anteriores que les he traído de Jim Carrey; aún posee un humor de doble sentido o con un tono muy adulto para la época. Pero bueno, en comparación con el humor ácido y absurdo que se ve actualmente en el mundo del cine considero que está mejor este tipo de humor de antes. Claro, es solo mi opinión, pero es un hecho de que no hay nadie como Carrey al momento de hacerte reír por cualquier cosa.

In this case, Jim Carrey takes on a different role than we have seen in previous films. This time, he does not have to be an intentionally irritating or unconsciously idiotic character to unimaginable extremes. Here, we only see a typical lawyer and family man who, after going through a typical divorce, has the responsibility of caring for his son, Max, from time to time. However, Fletcher Reede is a compulsive liar when it comes to making excuses for being late or not even showing up to his own son's birthday party. Yes, he is the typical american father who loves his job and women and always neglects his family.

But on that very night, at Max's birthday party, our sad little friend makes a wish from the bottom of his heart. His wish is that his father cannot tell lies for a whole day. This is how our compulsive and professional liar loses his most notable skill and begins to say everything he thinks from the heart and without any filter. The worst part is not this, but that his own job as a lawyer requires Fletcher to lie in order to win his most recent and important case. No matter how hard he thinks about how to do it, it is impossible for him to lie, especially when he knows that his case is so indefensible for a normal lawyer.

En este caso, Jim Carrey asume un papel diferente al que hemos visto en películas anteriores. Esta vez no tiene que ser un personaje intencionalmente irritante o inconscientemente idiota hasta extremos inimaginables. Aquí solo veremos a un típico abogado y padre de familia que, luego de pasar por un típico divorcio de siempre, tiene la responsabilidad de cuidar cada cierto tiempo de su hijo, Max. Pero justamente en esa noche, en la fiesta de cumpleaños de Max, nuestro pequeño y triste amigo pide un deseo desde lo más profundo de su corazón. Su deseo es que su padre no pueda decir mentiras durante todo un día. Es así como nuestro mentiroso compulsivo y profesional pierde su más notable habilidad y empieza a decir todo lo que opina de corazón y sin anestesia alguna. Lo peor no es esto, sino que su propio trabajo de abogado requiere de que Fletcher pueda mentir para así conseguir ganar su más reciente e importante caso. Por mucho que piense cómo hacerlo, le es imposible mentir y menos cuando sabe que su caso es tan indefendible para un abogado normal.

I think it goes without saying that anyone reading this will decide to go see this movie or at least admit that it's very appealing. Apart from its attractive premise, we see Jim Carrey demonstrate his acting talent in the role of Fletcher Reede. The funniest thing about this character is his abrupt 180-degree change at the beginning of the film when he finds it impossible to tell lies. Imagine working in a place where you've gotten used to lying to everyone, including your own colleagues and even your poor secretary, and then suddenly you start telling them the truth to their faces.

Any comment that comes out of Fletcher's mouth is a direct insult to his colleagues, bosses, and clients, clearly showing what he thinks of the people around him. And of course, this is funny because the way he says things and how he expresses himself is very striking. But the most interesting thing about this is how his inability to lie makes him reconsider his role as a father when he is unable to keep his promises. This is a clear example of how lies can ruin not only friendships and a promising job, but also relationships with your family and loved ones.

Creo que no hace falta decir nada para que cualquiera que me lea decida ir a ver esta película o admitir siquiera que es muy llamativa. Aparte de su atractiva premisa, vemos a un Jim Carrey demostrar su talento para la interpretación a la hora de hacer el papel de Fletcher Reede. Lo más gracioso de este personaje es su cambio abrupto y de 120° que tiene de un momento a otro al principio de la película cuando le es imposible decir mentiras. Imagínate trabajar en un lugar donde te has acostumbrado a mentirle a todo el mundo, inclusive a tus propios compañeros y hasta tu pobre secretaria y que de un momento a otro les llegues a decirles sus verdades a la cara.

Cualquier comentario que sale de la boca de Fletcher es un insulto directo para sus compañeros, jefes y clientes, siendo esto una muestra clara de lo que él opina o piensa de la gente que lo rodea. Y claro, esto es gracioso ya que llama mucho la atención la forma en la que él dice las cosas y cómo se expresa a su vez. Pero lo más interesante de esto es cómo dicha incapacidad de mentir lo hace reconsiderar su papel como padre al no poder cumplir con sus promesas. Esto es un claro ejemplo de cómo las mentiras pueden llegar a arruinar, no solo amistades y un puesto de trabajo prometedor, sino también relaciones con tus familiares y seres queridos, inclusive.

Another interesting aspect of this film is how Fletcher's life changes completely when he is unable to lie, ruining his image, his cases, and even his relationships with his colleagues, clients, and family. We've already mentioned this, yes, but the irony is how our protagonist has maintained all this through pure lies and how he has fared since then. Professionally and financially, he wasn't doing so badly, and he was able to get out of trouble and arguments by making up excuses. I wouldn't even be surprised if he evaded taxes, although we don't see that directly in the film.

Anyway, what I'm getting at with all this is the simple irony of a liar's life and how it can so easily fall apart just by telling the truth. The truth, something that is so valued and well regarded in the world and that people support and defend, but when it comes to applying it in their daily lives, they lose so many things, such as opportunities and even relationships. Human beings have been able to create a society by establishing a simulated peace and harmony based on pure lies and ignorance. Lies are now like daily bread; it's like breathing air for those at the top. While they enrich themselves based on lies, the rest of the world pales with reality.

Otra cosa interesante que tiene esta película es cómo la vida de Fletcher cambia por completo al momento de no ser capaz de mentir, arruinando tanto su imagen como sus casos y hasta sus relaciones con sus compañeros, clientes y familiares. Esto ya lo hemos mencionado, si, pero lo irónico es cómo todo esto lo ha mantenido nuestro protagonista a base de puras mentiras y cómo le ha ido desde entonces. Laboral y económicamente no le iba tan mal, además de que era capaz de zafarse de problemas y discusiones a base de excusas inventadas. Incluso no me sorprendería que evadiera impuestos, aunque eso no lo vemos directamente en la película.

Como sea, a lo que quiero llegar con todo esto es a la simple ironía de la vida de un mentiroso y cómo este se derrumba tan fácilmente con solo decir la verdad. La verdad, algo que es tan valorado y bien visto en el mundo y que la gente apoya y defiende, pero que al momento de aplicarlo en sus vidas diarias pierden tantas cosas como oportunidades y hasta relaciones. El ser humano ha sido capaz de crear una sociedad estableciendo una paz y armonía simulada a base de puras mentiras e ignorancia. Las mentiras son ahora como el pan de cada día, es como respirar aire para los que están arriba. Mientras se enriquecen a base de mentiras, el resto del mundo palidece con la realidad.

But anyway, let's leave all this tearful and depressing stuff behind and get on with this movie, which is supposed to make us laugh. Apart from Jim Carrey's excellent acting, we must appreciate his great ability to make such funny expressions and even go to such extremes as to hurt himself to the point of fainting in the attempt. Very few actors are as dedicated as Carrey when it comes to entertaining us with their talent and effort.

While much of what we see in this film is more laughable than anything else, something that should be highly valued is the relationship between Fletcher and his son Max and how this series of unfortunate events for our lying lawyer makes him reconsider his role as a father to the point of making several sacrifices to never lose sight of him. Mind you, from the beginning we see that Fletcher is made to be completely hated as a bad father, a compulsive liar, a jerk, a womanizer, and even completely inconsiderate (stingy) with poor or needy people. But after his son's wish and everything he goes through that day, we see a somewhat admirable character development.

Pero bueno, dejémonos de todo este tema lacrimógeno y depresivo y sigamos con esta película que se supone que debe darnos risa. Aparte del excelente trabajo de actuación que realiza Jim Carrey, hay que valorar su gran habilidad para hacer expresiones tan graciosas e incluso llegar a tales extremos de hacerse daño a sí mismo hasta tal punto de desmayarse en el intento. Muy pocos actores tienen tanta dedicación como la tiene Carrey al momento de entretenernos con su talento y esfuerzo.

Si bien gran parte de lo que vemos en esta película da más risa que cualquier otra cosa, algo que sí hay que valorar mucho es la relación que tiene Fletcher con su hijo Max y cómo toda esta serie de eventos desafortunados para nuestro mentiroso abogado hagan reconsiderar su papel como padre hasta tal punto de hacer varios sacrificios para nunca perderlo de vista. Ojo, desde el principio vemos que Fletcher está hecho para que lo odiemos por completo siendo un mal padre, un mentiroso compulsivo, un cretino, un mujeriego y hasta un completo desconsiderado (tacaño) con la gente pobre o necesitada. Pero luego del deseo de su hijo y de todo lo que vive ese día hace que veamos un desarrollo de personaje un tanto admirable.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspects of this movie. Being directed by the same person who brought us Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, it was to be expected that it would have a decent level of quality and a very low apparent budget. Clearly, being a family comedy starring Jim Carrey, it is evident that the focus of attention is on his performance and all the crazy things he does throughout the film. It also has a bright and pleasant color palette, decent cinematography, and good use of practical effects and sound effects. The soundtrack is very enjoyable and endearing, to be honest. And well, here you have another great comedy classic for anyone who wants to see it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

Dicha historia nos pone a pensar también sobre las relaciones que tenemos con nuestros familiares y nos preguntamos hasta dónde podemos llegar para no perder el contacto que tenemos con nuestros seres queridos. También nos enseña sobre la importancia de las promesas y cómo TODO lo que dices y no solo lo que haces también trae consecuencias para la gente que te rodea. Es por esto que me encanta bastante esta película, ya que logra contarnos una historia que pega en lo más profundo de nuestros corazones al tratarse de la familia y de las promesas que hacemos cada día. Su final es una serie de actos con resultados inesperados y agradables que vienen luego de tantos sacrificios.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Al ser dirigida por el mismo que nos trajo Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, era de esperarse que tuviera un nivel de calidad decente y con muy poco presupuesto aparente. Claramente, al ser una comedia familiar protagonizada por Jim Carrey, es evidente que el foco de la atención se lo lleve su interpretación y todas las locuras que hace a lo largo de la cinta. También tiene una paleta de colores brillantes y agradables, una fotografía decente y un buen trabajo en el uso de efectos prácticos y efectos de sonido. La banda sonora es muy agradable y entrañable, la verdad. Y bueno, aquí tienen otro gran clásico de la comedia para todo el que desee verla.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
