Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

If we're talking about movies that divided audiences, then the film I'm bringing you today is perfect for the occasion. Whether it was because of Jim Carrey's performance or because it was a film adaptation of a series of gothic novels for children, this movie was the talk of the town at the time. And it's no surprise when you see our famous and charismatic actor playing such a dark and multifaceted role as Count Olaf in this film. Personally, as I am completely ignorant about the original novels on which it is based, I will just give you my honest and innocent opinion about this gothic and strange film.

I remember it being one of the movies that was most often shown on cable television when I was a child. The first thing that caught my attention was Jim Carrey's performance, and rightly so, as he was one of my favorite actors even back then. Another detail that caught my attention about this film was its gothic tone with historical elements from the Victorian era. Since then, I have also been a big fan of gothic films, especially those made by Tim Burton (to whom I will also dedicate a special feature right after finishing this one on comedy). As I was a child at the time, I had no idea how dark and macabre the story was, until now.

Si hablamos de películas que llegaron a dividir a toda una audiencia, entonces esta cinta que les traigo hoy es perfecta para la ocasión. Ya sea por la actuación de Jim Carrey o por ser a su vez una adaptación cinematográfica de una serie de novelas góticas para niños, esta película llegó a dar mucho de qué hablar en su momento. Y no es de extrañar al ver a nuestro famoso y carismático actor interpretar un papel tan oscuro y polifacético como lo es el Conde Olaf en esta película. En lo personal, como soy todo un ignorante en lo que respecta a las novelas originales de las cuales se basaron, solo les daré mi opinión sincera e inocente sobre esta cinta gótica y extraña.

Recuerdo que era de las películas que más se transmitían en la televisión por cable cuando era pequeño. Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue la actuación de Jim Carrey y con mucha razón al ser uno de mis actores favoritos aún en aquel entonces. Otro detalle que me llamó la atención de esta película fue su tono gótico con elementos históricos de la era Victoriana. Desde entonces también fui muy fan de las películas góticas, sobre todo de las que hizo Tim Burton (a quien también le dedicaré un especial justo después de terminar este de comedia). Como era un niño en aquel entonces no tenía ni idea de lo oscura y macabra que era su historia, hasta ahora.

After the sad news of their parents' death, the Baudelaire siblings are sent to their new home where a supposed distant relative will take them in. This relative is Count Olaf, a supposed theater actor who is only interested in the large fortune Violet will receive from her deceased parents when she comes of age. From his macabre and neglected house to his own way of dressing and grooming, he exudes a sense of rejection and mistrust, but worst of all is the way the Count treats the Baudelaire siblings with contempt and mockery. While they spend their days cleaning and cooking, the Count is plotting a way to eliminate them once he receives full custody.

From the beginning, the film shows us an interesting mix of drama and mystery and a type of comedy that is very different from what we are used to talking about here. We won't see jokes or absurd moments, only dark humor that leans more toward the gothic than anything else. The sarcasm, the way the characters act, and even the way they speak and behave in this film is what generates that feeling of laughter and discomfort amid so many unfortunate moments experienced by our protagonists. Despite its macabre tone with themes such as death and all that, the film never ceases to entertain us with its unique and striking style.

Luego de la triste noticia de la muerte de sus padres, los hermanos Baudelaire son enviados a su nuevo hogar donde un supuesto familiar lejano los recibirá. Este se llama el Conde Olaf, un supuesto actor de teatro que solo está interesado en la gran fortuna que recibirá Violet por parte de sus difuntos padres al cumplir la mayoría de edad. Desde su macabra y descuidada casa hasta su propia forma de vestir y peinarse emanan una sensación de rechazo y desconfianza, pero lo peor de todo es la forma en la que el Conde trata a los hermanos Baudelaire con desprecio y con burlas. Mientras estos pasan sus días limpiando y cocinando, el Conde está planeando una forma de eliminarlos al recibir la custodia completa.

Desde el inicio la película nos muestra una interesante mezcla de drama con misterio y un tipo de comedia muy diferente a lo que ya estamos acostumbrados a hablar aquí. No veremos chistes ni momentos absurdos, solo veremos un humor oscuro tirando más a lo gótico que a otra cosa. El sarcasmo, la forma de actuar o la misma manera de hablar y comportarse de los personajes en esta película es lo que genera esa sensación de risa e incomodidad entre tantos momentos desafortunados que viven nuestros protagonistas. A pesar de su tono macabro con temas como la muerte y todo eso, la película no deja de entretenernos con su estilo único y llamativo.

Obviously, this isn't a film that everyone will enjoy watching, as the gothic humor used in this film may not be to everyone's liking. But with Jim Carrey on screen, it's impossible to ignore this story due to this great actor's talent for making us laugh with any of his performances. On this occasion, the character he plays here is nothing like the ones we have seen in the previous films I have brought you. Here he plays an antagonist, as well as being a count with bad taste in fashion, a clumsy criminal, and a very poor actor.

I don't know what the character is like in the original novel, but this is how Jim Carrey presents him to us in this film. While what he does and how he acts is naturally funny, this does not detract from his role as the main villain. We see that Count Olaf is a proud, contemptuous, and prejudiced person at first, but over time we discover that he is very elusive, manipulative, and even cunning, able to deceive others with his disguises and almost always get away with it. Worst of all, in the end we discover that he is even a serial killer with a crazy face and a complete street pyromaniac.

Obviamente, no es una película que a todo el mundo le guste ver ya que el humor gótico que se maneja en esta cinta puede que no sea del agrado de muchos. Pero con Jim Carrey en escena es imposible ignorar esta historia debido al talento que tiene este gran actor de hacernos reír con cualquiera de sus interpretaciones. En esta ocasión, el personaje que interpreta aquí no es para nada comparado con los que hemos conocido en las películas anteriores que les he traído. Aquí cumple con un papel antagónico, además de ser un Conde con un mal gusto por la moda, un criminal torpe y con muy mal talento para actuar.

No sé cómo es el personaje en la novela original, pero así es como nos lo presenta Jim Carrey en esta cinta. Si bien es gracioso por naturaleza lo que hace y cómo actúa mayormente, esto no quita que cumpla con su papel de villano principal. Vemos que el Conde Olaf es una persona orgullosa, despectiva y prejuiciosa al principio; pero con el tiempo vamos descubriendo que es alguien muy escurridizo, manipulador y hasta astuto para poder engañar a los demás con sus disfraces y salirse casi siempre con la suya. Lo peor de todo es que incluso al final descubrimos que es hasta un asesino serial con cara de loco y un completo pirómano de calle.

From the outset, it is evident that this character is the first to catch my attention thanks to Jim Carrey's performance. However, for a villain, I don't think he's as bad as many people make him out to be. Mind you, I say this thinking that it is a gothic comedy film based on a children's novel. From the outset, I don't expect much in terms of the story or the characters. But that doesn't take away from the fact that everyone's performance is very good for what we see in the film from start to finish. The mixture of tragic events with strange and even striking characters creates that sense of discomfort and humor that it seems to seek from the outset.

Of course, the film has its flaws, as expected. Especially when trying to find logic or meaning in everything we see from the beginning, it's better not to use your head too much when watching it, to be honest. There are also the other secondary characters and how completely idiotic they look in many scenes. Especially when unfortunate events occur, it's as if their intelligence completely escapes them when they ignore such obvious things. But hey, I guess all this is also part of the ironic and sarcastic humor of the film. This film definitely makes you hate all kinds of people.

Desde el principio es evidente que este personaje es el primero en llamar mi atención gracias al trabajo que realiza Jim Carrey. Sin embargo, para ser un villano considero que no lo hace tan mal como muchos lo pintan. Ojo, esto lo digo pensando que es una película de comedia gótica basada en una novela para niños. Desde un principio no espero mucho que digamos tanto de su historia como también de sus personajes. Pero eso no quita que la actuación de cada quien esté muy bien para lo que vemos en la cinta de inicio a fin. La mezcla de eventos trágicos con personajes extraños y hasta llamativos genera esa sanción de incomodidad y humor que parece buscar desde un principio.

Claro, la película tiene sus detalles como era de esperarse. Sobre todo al momento de buscarle lógica o sentido a todo lo que vemos desde el principio, es mejor no usar mucho la cabeza al momento de verla, la verdad. También están los demás personajes secundarios y lo completamente idiotas que se ven en muchas escenas. Sobre todo cuando los eventos desafortunados ocurren, es como si la inteligencia se les escapase por completo de su cerebro al ignorar cosas tan evidentes. Pero bueno, supongo que todo esto también es parte de ese humor irónico y sarcástico que tiene la película. Definitivamente, esta película logra que llegues a odiar a todo tipo de personas.

On the other hand, as for the main characters, those who play the Baudelaire siblings don't do a bad job either. They manage to surprise us with ideas and methods to get rid of some of the dirty tricks that Count Olaf puts in their way. Although, considering everything they went through from the beginning, I'm very surprised that at no point do we see them crying or getting sad or anything like that. Sure, they almost always have a dull look in their eyes, but I guess this is just another detail that helps complete the gothic atmosphere of the film. Anyway, for a mystery and drama film with gothic humor, it's not bad at all.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. Given its very striking gothic style, I was surprised to learn that it wasn't directed by the famous Tim Burton, who is an expert in these things. But hey, the director in charge of this film didn't do a bad job after all. From its photography style, fixed shots, mix of Victorian era elements, dark color palette, basic visual effects, and computer-generated effects. There are also well-added sound effects and, not to mention, an excellent soundtrack. Anyway, here's this gothic film starring Jim Carrey, in case you're interested in watching it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the gothic comedy, drama, and mystery genres.

Por otro lado, en cuanto a los protagonistas, los que interpretan a los hermanos Baudelaire no hacen tampoco un mal trabajo. Consiguen sorprendernos incluso con ideas y métodos para librarse de algunas de las malas tretas que les pone el Conde Olaf en el camino. Aunque, para vivir todo lo que ellos vivieron desde el principio me sorprende muchísimo que en ningún momento los lleguemos a ver llorando o ponerse tristes ni nada parecido. Claro, casi siempre andan con la mirada apagada, pero supongo que esto es otro detalle más que ayuda a completar ese ambiente gótico que posee la película. En fin, para ser una cinta de misterio y drama con humor gótico no está para nada mal.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Para poseer un estilo gótico muy vistoso, me sorprendió saber a última instancia que no la dirigió el famoso Tim Burton quien es un experto en estas cosas. Pero bueno, el director a cargo de esta cinta tampoco hizo un muy mal trabajo después de todo. Desde su estilo de fotografía, planos fijos, mezcla de elementos de la era Victoriana, paleta de colores oscuros, efectos visuales básicos y hechos por computadora. También están los efectos de sonido bien agregados y ni olvidar la excelente banda sonora que tiene. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película gótica de Jim Carrey, por si les interesa ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia gótica, drama y misterio.
