The truth is that I don't usually talk about sequels to movies I've seen, unless they're really worth reviewing. That's why, on this occasion, I couldn't help but talk to you about this movie, even though it's the sequel to the well-known Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. I'll confess right away that, for me, this second installment of the franchise is much better than the first. Not only because it's better produced, but because we see a crazier, wilder, and funnier Ace Ventura than ever before. I literally couldn't stop laughing throughout the entire movie when I saw it for the last time a few hours ago, after so long without seeing it.

Before continuing, I would like to mention something about the sequels to Jim Carrey's so-called "Trident of Comedy". Or rather, that's what I've just called the three films that catapulted our great actor to fame when they were released in 1994. I'm talking about The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Dumb and Dumber. Many fans claim that the sequels released after each film were a complete failure or that there is no Jim Carrey film from that era that does not have a bad sequel. However, I am here to tell you otherwise.

Es por eso que, en esta ocasión, no pude evitar hablarles de esta película, aún si es la secuela de la ya conocida Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Algo que les confesaré de una vez es que esta segunda entrega de la franquicia es, para mí, muchísimo mejor que la primera. No solo porque esté mejor producida, sino porque vemos a un Ace Ventura más alocado, desatado y gracioso que nunca. Literalmente no paré de reírme durante toda la película cuando la ví por última vez hace unas horas, luego de tanto tiempo sin verla.

Antes de continuar, quisiera mencionar algo con respecto a las secuelas de las llamadas “Tridente de la Comedia” de Jim Carrey. O bueno, así las acabo de llamar yo a las tres cintas que catapultaron a nuestro gran actor a la fama al ser estrenadas cada una en el año 1994. Estoy hablando de The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective y Dumb and Dumber. Muchos fanáticos afirman que las secuelas que sacaron después de cada cinta fueron todo un fracaso o que no hay película de Jim Carrey de aquella época que no tenga una mala secuela. Sin embargo, aquí estoy yo para decirles lo contrario.

At least in my opinion, I think that—unlike The Mask and Dumb and Dumber—Ace Ventura has one of the best sequels among all the comedy films Jim Carrey has been in. I won't deny that this sequel is almost like a repeat of the previous film from 1994. The only difference is that Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls has better audiovisual production, as well as more animals and much more striking supporting characters. But the most remarkable thing of all is the protagonist himself, who is a much more absurd and funny version than the Ace Ventura of the first film.

Surely many fans of this great classic will be upset by what I just said. But don't take it the wrong way, it's not my fault that since I was a kid, this second installment was the one I watched the most on cable TV, over and over again, non-stop. My nostalgia for this movie is much greater than for its predecessor, so much so that for a long time I thought it was the only installment that existed, until I later learned that it was a sequel. I remember most of the scenes well, and I never tire of laughing at each one. As I said, my sense of humor is completely broken because, for me, any joke or performance by Jim Carrey is the best.

Al menos en mi opinión, pienso que -a diferencia de The Mask y Dumb and Dumber- Ace Ventura tiene una de las mejores secuelas que existen entre todas las películas de comedia en las que Jim Carrey ha participado. No voy a negar tampoco que esta secuela es casi como una repetición de la cinta anterior de 1994. La única diferencia es que Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls tiene una mejor producción audiovisual, además de una mayor participación de animales y personajes secundarios mucho más llamativos. Pero lo más destacable de todo es el mismo protagonista, quien es una versión mucho más absurda y graciosa que la del Ave Ventura de la primera entrega.

Seguramente muchos fans de este gran clásico se molestarán por lo que les acabo de decir. Pero no se lo tomen a mal, no es mi culpa que desde pequeño esta segunda entrega era la que más veía en la televisión por cable repetidas veces y sin parar. La nostalgia que le tengo a esta película es mucho mayor que la que le tengo a su predecesora, tanto así que pensé por mucho tiempo que era la única entrega que existía, hasta que tiempo después supe que era una secuela. La mayoría de sus escenas las recuerdo bien y no me canso nunca de reírme de cada una de ellas. Como ya dije, tengo el humor completamente roto ya que, para mí, cualquier chiste o actuación que hace Jim Carrey es de lo mejor.

To this end, the decision to set the story in an area of the African jungle gives it a wild touch that its predecessor did not have. The variety of animals, the inclusion of local tribes, and even the reinterpretation of their traditions and customs are some of the details that make this film somewhat special. Although it's all just a joke, a satire in all its glory thanks to Jim Carrey's performance as Ace Ventura, I won't deny that I found it quite entertaining. This time, there wasn't a single scene that didn't make me laugh or make me feel uncomfortable; it was pure non-stop laughter, really.

Además de esto, la propia dirección e historia que tiene esta película ayuda a que el personaje de Ace Ventura se destaque cada vez más. Por un lado lo vemos siendo el detective de mascotas que todos conocemos, con sus chistes, conducta, forma de hablar y expresarte de manera absurda y exagerada. Pero por otro lado también vemos a un genio completamente incomprendido cuando se dedica a resolver el caso por el cual lo buscaron. Su amor por los animales también nos muestra una versión un tanto salvaje y primitiva de Ace. Lo interesante de esta secuela es que vemos al protagonista interactuar bastante con los animales, además de la variedad, el tiempo también es muy notable.

Para esto, el que hayan decidido desarrollar la historia en una zona de la selva de África le da ese toque salvaje que no posee su película antecesora. La variedad de animales, la inclusión de las tribus del lugar e incluso la reinterpretación de sus tradiciones y costumbres son algunos de los detalles que posee esta película y que la hace un tanto especial. Aunque todo sea un simple chiste, una sátira en todo su esplendor gracias a la interpretación y actuación de Jim Carrey como Ace Ventura, no voy a negar que me entretuvo bastante. Esta vez no hubo ninguna escena que no me diera risa o que me hiciera sentir incómodo, fue pura risa sin parar, de verdad.

The interesting thing about this sequel is that, as a standalone film, it works very well. In other words, you don't need to have seen the first film to understand this one. Both the story and the characters are independent of the previous film, and there is nothing that repeats or reminds us of it. There is only one thing, and that is Ace Ventura himself, not only because of his presence as the protagonist, but also because of the jokes and pranks he plays. Some of these jokes are repeated from the previous film, and the same goes for his dialogues and monologues. Even so, it's fun to watch because in this second installment, he looks and sounds even funnier.

I don't know, maybe I'm speaking mostly out of nostalgia, but the truth is, I found it quite entertaining. Even the secondary characters are all a repeat joke. Unlike Ace Ventura's partner, who manages to get along well with him in a funny way, we have the tribe chief, the translator, the girlfriend, and the members of the other tribe, who are all crazy bloodthirsty people. The difference between the two tribes is interesting, as are their customs. But the funniest thing is how Ace interacts with each of them, giving us unforgettable scenes and moments. Especially with the Wachootoo, who gave us one of the best comedy sequences in this film.

Lo interesante de esta secuela es que, como película independiente, logra funcionar muy bien. O sea, no necesitas ver la primera entrega para poder entender esta cinta. Tanto su historia como sus personajes son independientes de la anterior y no hay nada que se repita o que nos recuerde a ella. Solo una cosa y es Ace Ventura nomás por su sola presencia como protagonista, pero también por los chistes o bromas que hace. Algunas de estas bromas son repetidas de la película anterior, lo mismo sucede incluso con diálogos o monólogos que hace. Aún así, es divertido verlo ya que en esta segunda entrega se ve y suena hasta más gracioso, incluso.

No lo sé, tal vez hable por la mera nostalgia mayormente, pero es la verdad, me entretuvo bastante. Incluso los personajes secundarios son todos un chiste repetido. A diferencia del compañero de Ace Ventura, el cual logra compaginar bien con él de forma divertida; tenemos al jefe de la tribu, el traductor, la novia y los de la otra tribu que son todos unos locos sedientos de sangre. Es interesante la diferencia entre ambas tribus, además de sus costumbres. Pero lo más gracioso es cómo Ace interactúa con cada uno de ellos, dándonos escenas y momentos inolvidables. Sobre todo con los Wachootoo, los cuales nos dieron una de las mejores secuencias de comedia que tiene esta cinta.

But what can I say, this is the type of humor I saw when I was just a kid, so it's the type of comedy I prefer to watch when I see a movie today. That's why I think that today's comedy movies are nothing compared to those of the past, in my opinion. The 90s were a very different time, and you can see that when you watch these kinds of movies. Jim Carrey is definitely a genius of humor and acting, which is undeniable.

Another thing I would like to highlight about this movie is the hunting of wild animals in Africa. From the moment Ace Ventura arrives in Africa, we can see how even the embassy staff treat animals as future decorations, skins, and heads to hang on different walls. I suppose the message this film is trying to convey is quite clear, especially when we are shown how these behind-the-scenes negotiations related to the sale of exotic animals are carried out. Although this type of film has a detective theme and all, there is no need to wait long for the villains to appear.

Si, admito que el tipo de humor que se ve en esta película es a veces muy sugerente, con chistes de doble sentido e incluso con un humor muy negro y absurdo a la vez. Pero qué les puede decir, es este tipo de humor el que veía cuando era apenas un niño, así que es el tipo de comedia del cual prefiero ver al momento de ver una película al día de hoy. Es por eso que considero que las películas de comedia de ahora no son nada comparadas con las de antes, para mí. Los años 90 fueron una época muy diferente y eso se puede notar viendo este tipo de cintas. Jim Carrey es en definitiva un genio del humor y de la interpretación, lo cual es innegable.

Otra cosa que quisiera destacar de esta película es sobre la caza de animales salvajes en África. Ya desde la llegada de Ace Ventura a África podemos ver cómo hasta los mismo miembros de la embajada tratan a los animales como futuras decoraciones, pieles y cabezas colgantes en diferentes paredes. Supongo que el mensaje que nos intenta transmitir esta película es bastante claro, sobre todo cuando nos muestran cómo es que realizan dichas negociaciones tras bastidores relacionados a la venta de animales exóticos. Si bien este tipo de películas tiene un tema detectivesco y todo, no hace falta esperar mucho en cuanto a villanos se refiere.

Still, I can't deny that the movie is still entertaining, despite its predictable plot, repeated jokes, and generic characters. What entertained me the most was Jim Carrey's great performance, as well as his acting and collaboration with other actors throughout the film. This sequel definitely manages to surpass its predecessor by raising everything to a level of humor that was not believed possible at the time. The lack of originality and good characters is compensated for by its irreverent comedy.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this sequel. As I mentioned before, there is a noticeable difference in quality between this second installment and its predecessor. Both the cinematography and the color palette look much better. The visual and practical effects, as well as the makeup, have also improved greatly. What's more, I was surprised to learn that this film came out only a year after the first one. Even the computer-generated effects, such as Ace's "astral projection", look great. The sound effects are not far behind either. But the most striking thing of all is the soundtrack, which is even better than that of its predecessor. Anyway, here's this movie for those who are true Ace Ventura fans.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating when it comes to the comedy genre.

Desde el principio se puede notar claramente quién es el que está detrás de todo. Es tan evidente que, luego de verla una vez más es difícil no reírse por lo obvio. Aún así, no niego que la película sigue siendo divertida, a pesar de su trama predecible, chistes repetidos y personajes genéricos. Lo que me entretuvo mayormente fue la grandiosa actuación de Jim Carrey, además de su interpretación y colaboración con otros actores a lo largo de la película. Definitivamente, esta secuela logra superar a su antecesora elevando todo a un nivel de humor que no se creía posible en aquel entonces. La falta de originalidad y buenos personajes es compensado con su comedia irreverente.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de esta secuela. Como mencioné antes, es notable la gran diferencia de calidad que hay entre esta segunda entrega y su antecesora. Tanto la fotografía como la paleta de colores se ven mucho mejor. Los efectos visuales y prácticos, así como su maquillaje también mejoraron mucho. Es más, me sorprendió saber que esta película saliera solamente un año después de la primera. Incluso los efectos hechos por computadora como “la proyección astral” de Ace se ven muy bien. Los efectos de sonido tampoco se quedan atrás. Pero lo más llamativo de todo es la banda sonora, la cual incluso es mejor que la de su antecesora. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película para los que son verdaderos fans de Ace Ventura.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
