Film Review: American Pie 2 (2000)

In 1999 American Pie succeeded in resurrecting teen sex comedy, subgenre that was supposed to end with 1980s. Its success, which, to a degree, can be explained with first glimpses of 1980s nostalgia among older cohorts of GenXers, was surprisingly high and, as a result, led to inevitable and quickly made sequel. That was American Pie 2, 2001 film directed by James B. Rogers.

The plot is set one year after the event in the first film. The protagonists have managed to achieve their aim of losing virginity before prom night but, now, after first year at college, still have problems related to sex that appears to be their prime obsession. That especially includes Jim (played by Jason Biggs), who is obsessed with Nadia (played by Shannon Elizabeth), beautiful Czech exchange student who had caused scandal on Internet. When Nadia says that she would come to visit him during summer holidays, Jim gets panicked and quickly seeks advice from his sexually experienced flute-playing friend Michelle (played by Alyson Hannigan). Jim’s friends also have issues – Oz (played by Chris Klein) is bothered because his girlfriend Heather (played by Mena Suvari) lives in another part of the world; Kevin (played by Thomas Ian Nicholas) can’t get over the “friendly” breakup with girlfriend Vicki (played by Tara Reid); Paul (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas) is studying tantric sex in order to get rid of obsession with mother of his friend Stiffler (played by Sean William Scott). The friends are going to deal with all those issues when they gather at Lake Michigan before the end of holidays.

Anyone expecting anything particularly original is going to be disappointed with American Pie 2. Those who expected gags in this film to be more refined than toilet humour in American Pie are going to be even more disappointed. On the other hand, predictability appears to be both the advantage and disadvantage of this film; viewers who saw the first film will know exactly what to expect and, if they happened to like it the first time, they will like it the second time. That includes almost all characters who appeared two years before, even if their presence is reduced to only couple of scenes. The only novelty in script by Adam Herz is more emphasis on the character of Stiffler, which could be explained by increased popularity of Sean William Scott due to number of comedies released a year earlier. Despite lack of originality and brand of humour that is within standard of Farelly Brothers films, American Pie 2 can still entertain the audience and keep it in front of screen for hour and half. Herz in his script also shows some sympathy towards his sex-obsessed protagonists, giving this film a little nudge of humanity that some teen sex comedies in 1980s lacked. Because of that, this film can be recommended even to the viewers who aren’t too nostalgic towards 1980s or early 2000s.
