[ENG/ESP] Colonial bridge. Discovering history and charm.
Hello dear friends of #worldmappin, today I want to share with you my visit to the Colonial Bridge which is located in La Asunción, Arismendi municipality of Nueva Esparta state.
Hola queridos amigos de #worldmappin, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes mi visita al Puente Colonial que está ubicado en La Asunción, municipio Arismendi del estado Nueva Esparta.
As I have told you in previous posts, La Asunción always surprises me with something new. It is a magical place that never ceases to offer little treasures to discover.
I had passed very close to the bridge many times before, but I had never stopped to take a closer look until today. It was the sign that said “Colonial Bridge” that aroused my curiosity and encouraged me to stop.
Como les he comentado en publicaciones anteriores, La Asunción siempre me sorprende con algo nuevo. Es un lugar mágico que nunca deja de ofrecer pequeños tesoros por descubrir.
Había pasado numerosas veces muy cerca del puente, pero jamás me había detenido a observar detenidamente, hasta hoy. Fue el anuncio que decía "Puente Colonial" lo que despertó mi curiosidad y me animó a detenerme.
This bridge is an architectural work of the colonial era, built around 1608 to face the floods of the La Asunción River. At that time, this river was a plentiful flow of water that, after the rains, ran strong from Cerro Copey, after filling its reservoir. However, at present, the river is dry and its waters can only be observed during heavy rains. In spite of this, the street that crosses the bridge, today known as Santa Isabel, continues to tell stories of times past. All this information was shared with me by a friendly local woman, who kindly joined our tour to share what she herself had learned from her parents. I love this kind of passing on of stories, because it means that the traditions and memories of previous generations still live on.
As I explored the site, I was captivated by the beauty of the stone street leading to the bridge. According to what I was told, this street was of great importance in ancient times, as it served as the main thoroughfare for the passage of carts and pedestrians. I stopped for a few minutes to admire the solidity of the bridge, with its strong, tower-like walls. Every detail seems to speak of the time and mastery with which it was built. It is a real pity that there is no longer a river under it; it would have been a natural spectacle worth admiring.
Este puente es una obra arquitectónica de la época colonial, construida alrededor de 1608 para enfrentar las crecidas del río La Asunción. En aquel entonces, este río era un caudaloso flujo de agua que, tras las lluvias, corría fuerte desde el Cerro Copey, después de llenar su embalse. Sin embargo, en la actualidad, el río está seco y solo se pueden observar sus aguas durante las épocas de fuertes lluvias. A pesar de esto, la calle que atraviesa el puente, hoy conocida como Santa Isabel, sigue contando historias de épocas pasadas. Toda esta información me la compartió una amable lugareña, quien con mucha amabilidad se unió a nuestro recorrido para compartir lo que ella misma había aprendido de sus padres. Me encanta este tipo de transmisión de historias, porque significa que las tradiciones y los recuerdos de generaciones anteriores aún viven.
Mientras exploraba el lugar, quedé cautivada por la belleza de la calle de piedras que conduce al puente. Según me contaron, esta calle era de gran importancia en la antigüedad, ya que servía como vía principal para el paso de carretas y peatones. Me detuve durante unos minutos para admirar la solidez del puente, con sus fuertes muros que tienen formas de torre. Cada detalle parece hablar del tiempo y la maestría con que fue construido. Es una verdadera pena que ya no haya un río bajo él; hubiera sido un espectáculo natural digno de admirar.
Continuing my tour along the street, I came across a singular monument that immediately caught my attention. Its inscription read: “Avenida Luisa Cáceres - December 19, 1914”. In the center of the monument, there was a yellow flower that stood out for its originality and simplicity. This detail added a special touch to the place.
Continuando mi recorrido por la calle, me encontré con un monumento singular que capturó mi atención de inmediato. En su inscripción se podía leer: "Avenida Luisa Cáceres - 19 de Diciembre de 1914". En el centro del monumento, había una flor amarilla que destacaba por su originalidad y simplicidad. Este detalle añadió un toque especial al lugar.
Further on, as I passed this monument, I discovered a really charming space with a gazebo surrounded by large trees. Although it showed certain signs of neglect, it was impossible not to be captivated by its charm. A young woman passing nearby told me that this space had originally been created to hold fairs where handicrafts and traditional dishes of the region were sold. I was happy to hear that they are planning to resume this initiative, because this place has incredible potential. It is a beautiful corner that deserves to be rescued and fully utilized. The oak trees that surround it are majestic and offer a cool shade that makes it especially welcoming. It is easy to imagine how this space could once again become a vibrant gathering spot for the community.
Más adelante, al pasar este monumento, descubrí un espacio realmente encantador que contaba con una glorieta rodeada de grandes árboles. Aunque mostraba ciertos signos de descuido, era imposible no sentirme cautivada por su encanto. Una joven que pasaba cerca me comentó que este espacio había sido creado originalmente para realizar ferias donde se vendían artículos artesanales y platos tradicionales de la región. Me alegró escuchar que están planeando retomar esta iniciativa, porque este lugar tiene un potencial increíble. Es un rincón hermoso que merece ser rescatado y utilizado plenamente. Los árboles de roble que lo rodean son majestuosos y ofrecen una sombra fresca que lo hace especialmente acogedor. Es fácil imaginar cómo este espacio podría volver a convertirse en un punto de encuentro vibrante para la comunidad.
Another thing that caught my attention was how the stones of the place were painted with different colors, which added an air of joy and vitality to the surroundings. From there, some stairs lead down to Juan Cancio Rodríguez Street, where I finally went out to meet my husband, who was waiting for me on that side.
Otra de las cosas que llamó mi atención fue cómo las piedras del lugar estaban pintadas con diferentes colores, lo que añadía un aire de alegría y vitalidad al entorno. Desde allí, unas escaleras conducen hacia la calle Juan Cancio Rodríguez, por donde finalmente salí para reunirme con mi esposo, quien me estaba esperando en ese lado.
Well, dear friends, I hope you enjoyed as much as I did this beautiful discovery in the municipality of La Asunción. It is a place that reminds us of the importance of preserving history and taking care of those corners that, although forgotten, still have much to offer.

What a beautiful story that colonial bridge has, as well as that of its surrounding streets and that beautiful roundabout. I love the roundabouts from that era. It would be so sad if they let it go to waste. I know it would be refreshing to repair it and have it fulfill its original purpose. A place that really brings a very extraordinary comfort, very nice to enjoy, a truly amazing historical place, you managed to capture some very wide photos of the scenery.
