Church of St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi and St. Francis 🕊️

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Assisi is an extraordinary place that houses a small, modest chapel – the Porziuncola. When I enter, I am immediately struck by the contrast between the huge church and the tiny chapel at its heart. This is where St. Francis prayed, heard God's voice and founded his order. They say that this is the holiest place for Francis, who liked to come here often - it is one of the most important sacred places of this place. In front of the chapel there are frescoes of quite poor quality (faded) telling about the visions and miracles that took place here and presenting the life of the saint. When visiting this place, I did not manage to arrive at the right time, because there were many renovations, many places were inaccessible to tourists. However, what really interested me was the enclosed garden seen through the glass. In the courtyard there is a sculpture of Francis, leaning forward, as if in contemplation of the whole world. There are roses without thorns growing nearby – legend says that the saint himself threw himself into their bushes, and they lost their thorns out of love for him. Inside and outside you can see doves, a symbol of St. Francis' attachment to animals. The doves are alive, they are not afraid of tourists, they fly overhead 🙂

Bazylika Matki Bożej Anielskiej w Asyżu to niezwykłe miejsce, które kryje w sobie małą, skromną kaplicę – Porcjunkulę. Gdy wchodzę do środka, od razu uderza mnie kontrast między ogromnym kościołem a maleńką kapliczką w jego sercu. To tutaj św. Franciszek modlił się, słyszał Boży głos i założył swój zakon. Mówią, że to najświętsze miejsce dla Franciszka, który lubił często tutaj przychodzi - jest to jedno z najważniejszych miejsc sakralnych tego miejsca.
Przed kaplicą są freski dość kiepskiej jakości (wyblaknięte) opowiadające o wizjach i cudach, które miały tu miejsce oraz przedstawiają życie świętego. Odwiedzając to miejsce nie udało mi się przyjechać w odpowiednim czasie, bo było wiele remontów, sporo miejsc było niedostępnych dla turystów. Jednak to, co mnie bardzo ciekawiło to zamknięty ogród widziany przez szybę. Na dziedzińcu stoi rzeźba Franciszka, pochylonego, jakby w zadumie nad całym światem. Obok rosną róże bez kolców – legenda mówi, że sam święty rzucił się w ich krzewy, a one straciły kolce z miłości do niego. Od wewnątrz i na zewnątrz można spotkać gołębie, symbol przywiązania św. Franciszka do zwierząt. Gołębie są żywe, nie boją się turystów, latają nad głowami 🙂
